Business of Photography/Videography / Why Photography
« on: July 13, 2014, 07:44:29 AM »
I got into this ridiculous hobby post retirement.  It is a self-satisfying way to pass the time as it keeps me off the streets and outta the bars, but, if someone approached me about making a career from photography...I would be forced to slap them up-side the head.  http://work.chron.com/estimated-salary-photographer-7219.html

Aside from the occasionally successful wedding and fashion photog...who is gonna buy your stuff.
Besides the local hotel that hosts local photography and the traveling art shows that caters to folks with some disposable income...photography doesn't sell.
Peruse the "decorator wall d├ęcor" websites, photography occupies a very small subset therein, so again I ask...who is gonna buy your stuff?

EOS Bodies / Re: Eos7D mk2, How disappointed will you be if . . .?

Disappointment would be Canon releasing new prosumer cameras that are comparable to Sony...Gawd, I hope not.    :(

Technical Support / non functioning shutter
« on: July 04, 2014, 01:02:34 PM »
Just got this 1DsMkIII back from canon repair>returned all CF settings to the best I can remember...

Problem is that the shutter button will not respond by taking a picture, it will lock on Autofocus but, will not cough out a picture.
However, it will function properly while in Live View Mode...it does cough out a image shooting in LV.

FYI...customer service is closed today.

Technical Support / 1DsMkIII custom functions
« on: July 02, 2014, 09:55:55 AM »
Alright, I pissed-up...Canon reset all my custom functions during repair and I hadn't saved them.
I always shoot in manual mode using the LCD live view histogram to set exposure.  That said...
anyone have links for suggested CF settings regarding BIF/critters/sports shooting using AI Servo?
FYI...firmware version 1.2.3

Photography Technique / 180 mm macro with kenko extension tubes
« on: June 29, 2014, 08:42:43 PM »
1Ds3 & 180 macro, coupled with extension tubes at minimum focusing distance...12mm/20mm/36mm, all or any combination thereof.
What are the formulas to determine magnification factors using the various extension tubes and/or combinations?    :-[

Photography against the clock is an exercise in futility.     ;)

I just now gave my CC info to Canon in New Jersey to repair my gear...anyone have a guestimate on when I'll get it back in Michigan?    ;)

Front focus/back focus...does no one bother with micro focus adjustment...it's a no brainer!    :o

Photography Technique / Re: How do I get the whole picture sharp?
« on: June 11, 2014, 03:42:42 PM »
IMHO, stacking is the greatest thing since sliced bread for those that wish to avoid any hint of distortion...why tighten that lens down when you can open that lens and stack the images.  This was a 300mm at f/2.8, about 20 some image stack.

Macro / Some recent flower stuff

All shot using a 180 macro on a Ds3

This rose was backlit using a mirror's sun reflection...

A glycerin droplet reflecting a pair of flowers...

Portrait / Coy Dove
« on: April 29, 2014, 03:43:38 AM »
I do a lot of stuff just to see if I could do it.  This dove is 20 images, focus stacked and photo-merged using a tripod mounted 2X TC with a 300 mm 2.8 lens,
manual focusing/exposure.  At full size, it would be a 20" x 30" print at 300 dpi.
