I would just take the 60D and the 24-105, maybe if you have a wider alternative as a second one also. That should cover the most. I live in a very dirty and dusty country and often go to the beach. I always have a cotton scarf for myself and that I also use to wipe off the camera over the course of the day, sometimes I use it to cover the camera also.

With regards to this. Which app would you recommend? There's plenty on the Play store. I have a 5D3 and will soon get an S4. Re möte triggering and intervalometer is what I am looking for. How can I connect with the 5D3?

Pricewatch Deals / Re: Prices trending higher?

What I don't understand is why MAP is keeping prices high when the YEN has fallen considerably in value in recent months. Japanese exports should now be much cheaper for buyers.
This stuff is slow moving, they could have hedged the currencies for six month periods for example. You never know when the cut off points are. Plus it's driven by market dem and, they will maximize profits when they can.

hi, I have a Crumpler bag takes my 5D3 with th 70-200 MkII mounted and an extra lens on the side.  From tjat I can also take out the inner camera padded bag. It has a front compartment that closes with zippers. Im very happy with it and often use it. Don't remember the product name but check their homepage.

Do you really think so? Canon has an organisation locking up great customer features available in their cameras providing extra value and functionality without having to accept responsibility for it to work. That is an ideal situation for Canon. Large companies are always happy for that, if they wanted they could lock it, but they don't, it's part of their ecosystem and they don't have to guarantee any functionality. It makes all the geeks happy that they can 'beat the system' and it makes Canon happy that they will have the geeks saying good things about them.

5D MK III Sample Images / Re: 5D MK III Images

I agree, I'm actually out several times per week, it's just that I feel that this takes more time and equipment compared to other types of photography, I need to overcome that obstacle.

thanks
J

I agree that bringing the equipment and filters especially the tripod is a bit cumbersome but there's some sense of self-fullfillment once you achieve what you have pre-visualized. That's the beauty of shooting.  :) Cheers and have a nice weekend.  :)

Cheers,

Rik

Yep, it's just not in my comfort zone yet also I think. I will have to make a conscious effort to get out and get it done soon. I'm likely to get hooked on it as I am on some of the other stuff.

thanks
J

Here's our latest picture, shot with the 5D mkii and 24-105 f4.

Taken from a small mountain in the English Lake District National Park called Haystacks, looking north west, late evening.

Did someone on CR once call this lens 'garbage" ?  ;D
I certainly never did. I love it and use it most of the time. I love the photograph, I hope to go there some day.

EOS Bodies / Re: EOS 70D & EOS 7D Mark II

Sales drive revenue. Revenue drives profit. Profit is a major driver of share price and shareholder value.  Share price and shareholder value determine whether a public company thrives, survives, or fails.

Betamax was better quality than VHS.  VHS sold better. Betamax failed and was abandoned.

On a more DSLR related note, Olympus came out with 4/3 format. It was going to be a worldwide standard. Many things about thier cameras were ahead of what the Canon and Nikon crop bodies offered at the time. They had beter user interface, beter weatherproofing, arguably better sensor performance, and faster autofocusing..... and where is it now? ( 4/3... not micro 4/3 ).  Sales sucked, product not stocked by retail stores, death spiral, gone.

I don't think you're paying attention.

Look at the sales figures for MILC cameras (Mirrorless Interchangable Lens Cameras).

And if that market was a dead end that was dying then why would Canon have released the EOS-M?

4/3 dSLR, not m4/3 MILC, is what was stated.  The most recent 4/3 camera is the Olympus E-5, a 'pro' body almost 3 years old that no one expects will be replaced. It's #3,139 in Amazon's sales ranking.  The 'consumer' line of 4/3 cameras (E-xxx) stopped with the E-600 in 2009. Panasonic and Leica tried the format, dropped it over 6 years ago.

So, who's not paying attention?  You, dilbert.  But at least you've figured out we're talking about cameras, not lenses, this time.  Bravo.
Sometimes you're my hero man!

Lenses / Re: Best Lenses for Canon EOS 5D Mark III according to DxO

I was trying to make some fun of this. Before I got the 70-200 MkII I did check reviews although I was certain that I was going to get it anyway, I can't remember any of them not praising the MkII overall and in comparison to the MkI. I'm not surprised the 24-105 ends up a little further back, but I still like it and currently can't justify buying the 24-70 MkII. My 35L gets very little love, but I'm very very happy with it. It makes me happy even looking at it, not to mention using it. I've borrowed a 50 1.4 for a portrait shoot I will do next week. It's very nice as a lens but feels really cheap compared to my other lenses. Might get one though anyway.

Lists like this are fun anyway I think. It's like sports results and standings, you always root for your own team and always find the statistics that makes your team/brand look better  ;D

Lenses / Best Lenses for Canon EOS 5D Mark III according to DxO

I love rankings, but unfortunately I seem to have bought the wrong lenses for my 5D3   :(

Maybe I have to sell them all.

Somebody had posted a utility on CR that read EXIF and gave you stats. I think it was a year back. If I find it, I will post the link to the thread.

Hi,

I remember that thread, but can't find it. Anyway, here is the link to the plugin:

I think it was Marsu that recommended it. I'm still undecided about downloading it.

It was mentioned that Canon doesn’t have plans currently to launch more EOS M prime lenses, as they see the segment as “entry level”. I’m not sure I agree with that if true.

Nor I and if Canon have said that then it shows a rather remarkable disconnect with where digital photography is going.

Yeah same here. More and more I see really good photographers drawn towards smaller powerful bodies. This confirms that Canon is completely lost. Maybe they see is as entry level because their current offering is half baked and not selling well.

So could you please elaborate on this subject instead of coming up with these blanket statements?

I don't know about Very Serious Photo Enthusiasts, but some Pro shooters are switching to mirrorless.

Hers's one http://www.damianmcgillicuddy.com/journal/2013/5/15/m43-strutting-its-stuff

And here's another "Good enough for Vogue Italia, good enough for me." http://jonathanposner.tumblr.com/post/40780795719/my-olympus-challenge-10

And a third https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=3dSWa5rcVlw

Hi, thanks for the links, checked out Posner and McGillicuddy. It probably makes sense to some people shooting in certain situations. I guess where resolution, AF and probably other areas I can't think of now matters, people will need DSLRs even in the future. This Posner guy doesn't really come out as very confident explaining his choice. It seems to me he has to justify it to the reader. Does he believe in himself or is it a way of creating buzz around him?

Anyway, as said by me and many, competition is good. It'll be interesting to see where we are in five years.
