Lenses / Would this be an upgrade?
« on: September 09, 2013, 01:37:39 PM »
I own a 7D, Canon 70-200 f/4L non-IS, and a 300mm f/4L non-IS.

I like the lenses, but I've been considering something with more reach for birding.

I've read some about the Sigma 50-500mm, and am wondering if people would consider that an upgrade, or if there are other options.  I'm fine with prime lenses, but would have a $1500 price ceiling.

Thoughts?

PowerShot / Compact Camera suggestions?
« on: February 23, 2013, 04:56:20 PM »
Hi again,

I have a friend that is a personal trainer and is in need of a new camera.  He wants to be able to take action shots of himself in his gym, as well as have capability of taking video if possible for marketing purposes.  He has a budget of $400.  The priority is taking action shots, not so much the video.  Again, I don't know much about P&S cameras, so I was hoping to get suggestions.  I'm assuming he'll need a good aperture and ISO performance, and a decent MP count (12ish).

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

PowerShot / Advice on P&S
« on: January 22, 2013, 09:05:28 AM »
Hi everyone! I have been asked by a friend of mine for advice on a P&S system, and which to buy.  Unfortunately, I know nothing about what cameras are good outside of DSLRs, so I am at a loss for what to recommend, and I don't even know where to begin looking on this forum.

She did give me what kind of features she is looking for, and a $300 price ceiling.  I don't think that all of her demands will be met (at all), but I am hoping to at least point her in the right direction with features.

She wants a camera that is decent in low light, and has a decent zoom to get her closer to birds "and other pretty things".  She has a basic background in photography from back in the day, so she wants to be able to use the camera on fully manual if possible.  She also has two younger kids and a couple of cats, so I'm sure those will be her subjects often.  She isn't really thinking about prints, so high MPs aren't a requirement.

I hope this is enough information for suggestions!

Thanks!

Lenses / Wide Angle on a Budget
« on: November 28, 2012, 08:16:56 PM »
I have a need for a wide angle lens for my 7d.  Preferably something fast, 2.8 or better.

I had a 24-70mm f/2.8L I, as well as a 17-35mm f/2.8L (yes, 17-not 16).  I sold both because I didn't use them, and picked up a 50mm f/1.2L to upgrade my f/1.4 for portraits.

I would like to use this lens for indoor candid uses primarily, hence f/2.8 or faster.  I have a budget of ~$600, but I am in no rush to spend that much.  I don't do a lot of landscape, but occasionally I will dabble in it, as well as the sporadic attempts at astrophotography (too much light pollution where I am).  I like to shoot wildlife (on a budget), so I have no desire to go ff at the moment, so I wouldn't be buying a lens with that in mind.

I wasn't a huge fan of the 17-35mm because it just wasn't all that good on my 7d.  I didn't get anything calibrated, and didn't do any AFMA, so maybe having a better copy would have been fine, but I couldn't justify it at the time.

I have considered the 28mm f/1.8, but I'm not sure if that would be the best idea for me.

Thoughts?
