Software & Accessories / Camranger, anyone used for stills or video?
« on: December 18, 2012, 08:20:51 PM »
It looks like http://camranger.com is selling a $300 bit of hardware that'll effectively allow you to control virtually all features of newer EOS bodies from an iPod, iPhone, or iPad through wifi with NO COMPUTER in the middle of things ... and they claim up to 150 feet of range.  It sounds pretty great to me, possibly too good to be true, especially since they have enabled the video control (which Canon has crippled on their wi-fi options for the 6D, 5Dii & iii - at least for now).

Has anyone here tried it yet and can offer pros and cons?

Thanks, in advance!

yeah there's an app for that....and search more on the web  ::) took me 10 seconds to find it(slow typer)

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dslr-camera-remote-professional/id316771002?mt=8

But it does require a PC or a laptop as the interface to the camera..... Here's to hoping that the next round of wifi in cameras allows you to go direct..... I think the 6D allows most of the functionality to be done this way, but having never even seen one, I am going on secondhand knowledge.

Thanks, you're right about the computer.  The 6d disables video as soon as you turn on wi-fi apparently, so at least until they update the firmware and EOS Remote App, that option isn't on the table I'm afraid.  Same, apparently, for the pricey wi-fi options available from Canon for the 5d ii, and 5d iii.

What's with the smug attitude when you don't bother to read the post carefully?  There are loads of apps that do things LIKE this, but I'm asking a specific question about using a tablet to directly monitor and control the camera (which DSLR does, apparently effectively).  If you don't have anything to contribute, don't!  Adding a computer between the tablet and the camera works with a lot of options, but you need to have a computer up and running which is a very different and cumbersome set up.

EOS Bodies / Re: 6D wi-fi controlling video?

Right, thanks for the helpful videos and details from the manual, I get the sense that the canon mobile app has not yet worked the video out (aka crippled), although it doesn't make a lot of sense why given that it's very much in control of all the camera's functions, and EOS Utility allows you to shoot video, no problem (no digital zoom possible on the T3i).

Given that there are non-Canon apps that also allow control over the camera, including video like http://dslrcontroller.com/ with a wired connection, my guess is that someone, and maybe eventually Canon, will come up with a great iPad app that will allow remote video shooting.

In the mean time, I wonder if it would work to turn on Live View so you can monitor the focus and exposure on your iPhone or iPad, then when you want to trigger the video, you do so manually on the camera.  Although, this wouldn't allow truly remote video shooting, it would likely work just fine for most applications where you just want to use the iPad as an off camera monitor and controller.  This does not work on EOS Utility as far as I can tell, but maybe there's a way to allow control from both the computer and the camera.

EOS Bodies / 6D wi-fi controlling video?
« on: December 01, 2012, 07:21:03 PM »
Has anyone tested out the Wi-Fi on the 6D shooting video using a remote device to control the camera?

I've seen mixed things about it here, one poster suggested that it's disabled based on a minor comment in the manual.  And I couldn't find anything in the manual which indicated how to start and stop video, etc with the mobile app.  There's one 'hands on' youtube clip that claims this works both in the comments and the guy at the trade show, but it's not demonstrated.

Of course this would be an incredibly useful feature, allowing use of an iPhone or better yet an iPad as an off-camera monitor and controller.  With the EOS Utility of course you can control the video, and it looks like the mobile app is built very much the same way ... but I'd really like to hear from someone who has the camera in hand who can vouch for it being possible or not.

Thanks!

Software & Accessories / DSLR Controller remote control of EOS bodies

Does anyone have experience shooting with any EOS body using "DSLR Controller" which allows an android device to do damn near anything EOS Utility does?  I'm especially interested in shooting video with it (on a 5dii and T3i) as it may allow tablets to be used as cheap off camera monitors.

And if someone has good inside info, any predictions about when the iPad/Pod/Phone version will emerge?

Thanks!
