Does anyone know if this kind of shooting could be possible on the 6D in the future?
By the way, fantastic job (again) to the ML team!  :D

They said they're working on other cameras as well, and there is a limited build for the 5DII, and appears to be working well, albeit not as good as the 5D3. The problem though here is with the cards, SDs don't go as fast as CF and even then you need the fasted available CF cards. So the SD only 6D may not work well. Though, lower resolution with the fasted SD cards could work, not sure, much is in development with so many changes coming so quick~

Thanks for the respond! Makes me regret a bit buying the 6D a few weeks ago  :(
Do you think with HDMI out, the writing speed could be fast enough? That might be a solution to get pass the SDs lower writing speed.

From my personal experience with the 100mm f/2.8L, I would say f/5.6, though I have not done any formal testing on it. It is a really awesome lens BTW!  :D

Canon General / Re: How much would you pay?

About as much as a coffee is worth.

If they serve a nice lunch... yeah I could see paying a little more... especially if there is an open bar or drinks are included.

+1 (although I would actually prefer some filet mignon and a Cognac!)  ;)

get the Kenko DG extention tubes.

you buy these tubes once.
no reason to buy the cheapest stuff and have wobbling tubes or tubes that have issues with the electronic contacts.

I have no experience with those cheap one, but I have to agree, Kenko are great. I bought them two years ago and they always work perfectly. They aren't that expensive neither.

What is this? Desert, salt flat, drought area, moon? When i saw "crusty", the first thing that entered my mind was Crusty the Clown from the Simpsons. No disrespect intended. :)

In that case, it would have been named Krusty!  ;)

Very nice photos (and even better excuses)!  :P

I use Canon 135L as well as 24 TSE II and have owned MF Zeiss.  Manual-focusing a wide angle is WORLDS easier than 135mm, so if MF is already an issue with Leica, I would stick with Canon 135L, which as we all know is a superb lens.  Who knows, from preliminary reports, the Zeiss 135 may have less CA and sharper wide open, but do we really need sharper than 135L?  Zeiss also costs double the current 135L street price and is heavier.

+1

Photozone.de even mentioned how hard it was for them to focus the zeiss 100mm f2 makro. on all accounts a fine lens with near perfect performance, but hard to focus accurately.

At wide aperatures and portrait ranges the DOF with a 135mm are razor thin.  Manual focus would be a difficult and time consuming.  I'm extremely happy with my Canon 135L, I can easily ignore this lens when/if it does go into production.

I guess it is a matter of personal preference. I personally find manual focusing far more precise than AF. Moreover, according to B&H, the Zeiss 135mm has a 268° focus ring. I agree, however, that this is really not a glass that is going to fit everyone!

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 6D focus screen compatibility
« on: April 24, 2013, 11:27:29 AM »
Hello,
I just bought a 6D and I was looking for a focus screen to help with manual focus. I am getting mixed information about the compatibility; some say that any focus screen that work for the 5D MkII will work and other say that none will. Can anybody help me? If it can help, I am looking for a split-sreen focus screen like this: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/180-horizontal-Split-Image-Focus-Focusing-Screen-For-Canon-EOS-5D2-5D-Mark-II?item=271183492503&cmd=ViewItem&_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D4%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D7174353032350245585.
Thank you very much!  :)

I was checking-out for focus screens and I found this. It seems like a focus screen with split image, just like what was in film camera, like your AE-1 or my K-1000!  :P
Does anyone has any information on those? Are the any good? Is this a scam? Because, even though they are expensive, slip image focus was pretty much the best way for manual focus IMO. Thanks!

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: New 6D and M42 lenses capability.

I tried today the Helios 44-2 on my 6D and I am happy to say that it work perfectly, even at infinity. I though it was a great lens when using it on a APS-C body, but on FF, I must say it is simply fabulous!

How were photographers able to manual focus quickly back in the days? Aside from a lot of practice, was there a technique involved in shooting fast manual?

Some technique, yes.  But of course, the focus screen wasn't the plain one on modern dSLRs - there was a split prism and microprism collar around it as focusing aids.  You can get such focus screens for current bodies, too, although only some bodies feature easy user replacement of the screen (e.g. the 6D and 1D X do, the 5DIII does not).

Very interesting! Although I really like my newer digital gear, I honestly miss the split prism focusing system of my good old Pentax K-1000 film camera.
How do focus screens work on newer body? Are they like the old split prism from the film-era? Any recommendation on which is the best for the 6D? Thanks a lot!

I don't have any first-hand experience with 24mm lens, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
If you don't use autofocus, I heard some nice thing about the Samyang 24mm f/1.4. According to lenstip.com, the border performances, although far from perfect, are better on FF than the canon 24mm f/1.4. Also, you can find it at 609$. However, keep in mind that it doesn't have any electronic, so that means no autofocus, no IS, no EXIF, etc.

P.S: The Rokinon is just a rebranding of the Samyang.

This might sound pretty stupid but I rather ask.
I just receive my 6D. I tried to mount different lens, including my Helios 44-2. I was able to focus to infinity with all of them without problem. I am wondering if I understand right. I mounted the lens while on the closest focusing distance, then slowly focus toward the infinity and never notice resistance. Is this how you check for mirror issues? If I take a photo at infinity with the Helios 44-2, will the mirror slam into the back of the lens?
Thanks a lot!

It's nothing so dramatic.  What will happen (typically towards infinity focus), is that after taking the picture the mirror will hang and the viewfinder will go dark.  Bringing the focus back will typically release it.  It probably does almost no damage, but do it repetitively and you would start to get some fine dust from the edge of the mirror on your sensor.  I've had mirror hang many times before but never done any appreciable damage.

If you have one that doesn't focus to infinity, you can get around that by shooting in Live View mode before you focus to infinity.  Just be sure to back the focus back off before disabling Live View (at which time the mirror will go down).

Thank you again! I just tried with both SMC Pentax-M 28mm f/2.8 and 50mm f/1.7. Sadly, neither works a infinity.  :(

Are these K mount lenses?  I have the M42 SMC Takumar 28mm f/3.5 and the SMC Tak 55mm f/1.8 and both work perfectly

Sorry, I forgot to specify; they are K mount lens.

That is good to know.  I have tested very few K Mount lenses on Canon full frame bodies.  I'm not overly surprised by the 28mm, but a bit surprised by the 50mm.  I wonder if K Mount lenses need a bit more room?

It might be. I am going to test with the SMC Pentax-M 50mm f/4 Macro.
