It's such a small lens that I (irrationally) felt I had to add some protection to it. So I added a rubber lens hood.

have you seen the ThinkTank Hydrophobias? It's similar to the Amazon one but a whole lot more expensive.

I read the OP and couldn't really understand the whinge. I didn't read past the first page.
My first thought was WOW what a great wife & kid and what a fantastic family. Most people have lost count of how many useless/thoughtless presents they have received over the years. You have an amazing thoughtful family and you're complaining to the world! I wondered how they felt, after they put in so much effort, and spent so much money.
My second thought was it's not the camera but the person behind the camera. The camera (especially these 2 juggernauts: 5DM3 vs 1DX) is the least limiting factor to capturing great images.
I couldn't read anymore.
About this thread:
American "freedom of expression" is used to override the laws of defamation and put forth a message of hatred. We are not all American and don't have that legal freedom. As was previously mentioned, some of us do however have a legal obligation to quash acts/messages based on hatred.
However if people would take a moment to construct their messages. They would find that there are many ways convey the same sentiment and with the same gravity to get their point across (or float their boat).

My 1st camera is a T2i/550D. The situation: Heavy Heavy rainstorm on a once in a lifetime trip to Cuba. I planned to pull out the Rebel when I was under cover. I covered the camera with the Optech rain cover, the camera was also under a rain coat and an umbrella.
The result was the rain didn't kill the camera but the build-up of humidity did. I believe moisture got in and fried the circuit board.
I upgraded to the 5DM3 with L Lenses for some extra weather resistance. If I'm ever caught in a similar situation, I doubt if I would use the Optech rain cover again. I would protect the camera from the rain but allow it to 'breathe'.

If you have a nice exterior view:
The night before: turn on the lights that will best show off the interior & measure the light.
Take a few shots on a tripod to make sure you capture the interior scene.
Morning/Evening next day: (whichever best shows off the exterior view) Set the tripod in the same position, turn on the same interior lights and use the camera settings from the night shoot. Take a photograph every 10-15 minutes. Eventually outside light will match interior light and you get a photograph with beautiful interior and exterior.

In this statement, it seems that you are comparing film types. Ie different ISOs, film styles and processing quality. And in your original post, you are now comparing cameras. If you use the same film type in 2 different Canon cameras would you see much of a difference.
Please remember that with digital, both ISO & film style (jpg) are now adjustable in camera. Digital now gives you the choice to process your images to the nth degree before converting them to physical photographs.

The main reason I got the 5D3 was that my once in a lifetime trip to Cuba was ruined when my Rebel (550D) died. It couldn't handle the weather conditions.
FYI: It was raining. The Rebel was in an optech plastic rain coat, under my rain coat and an umbrella. AND it still died!
So weather sealing is very very important and a back-up camera. I had to make do with my G12 on manual.
IQ wasn't part of the criteria for selecting a new camera. My presumption was that all new DSLRs would be an upgrade regarding IQ. A big successful business, such as Canon, would only release a DSLR with decent or better IQ with each new product.
My main criteria was weather sealing and robustness. So the choice came down to old 7D or new 5D3. New 5D3 won outright.
Some posters have suggested an extender to work with your 70-200 f/4. I seem to have read somewhere where that the 5D3 doesn't AF @ f/8. This supposed to change with an update coming out this year.

My first dslr was a Canon 550d (T2i). I chose Canon because at the time it was the best entry point camera around.
