Canon General / Re: Why buy from a bricks and mortar store?
« on: January 16, 2013, 05:39:03 PM »
Like others I would love to be able to support local stores...at the moment we have one Camera Store in Bolton and quite a few in Manchester (approx 20 miles away) but the price differentiation placed on the smaller independents by manufacturers just does not make it viable...and with a 20% VAT (ie sales tax) on products you can see why more people in the UK are willing to shop around...

Examples in Pricing:

Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS II USM Lens

£1799.00 (from Wex Photographic - ordered to be delivered a couple of hundred miles but with a UK Warranty)
£1849.00 (Mathers of lancashire - local shop with UK Warranty)

£1389.99 (Grey import from procamerashop with free delivery/ their own 1 year warranty on mainland UK over £30)
£1311.00 (Grey import via Panamoz their own 1 year warranty or even in some cases a 1 yr replacement warranty)

So taking the lowest at Panamoz and the highest price at the local store, thats a difference of £488.00 ($780 approx) excluding any VAT (sales taxes).

I have purchased from Jessops (used to be local store b4 going into administration and have bought purchases from Wex) in the past but will certainly look round for 'consideration' in pricing by the establishments/manufacturers

P.S- sorry guys Taurus and Libra are the only sun signs I actually know about don't even know the names of the others or what ancient mumbo jumbo attributed them to.
Basically, you got four groups:

water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces - social types ("I gotta tell you about this 5D3 I bought!")
air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius - cerebral types ("Let me tell you why I bought a 5D3!")
fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius - active types ("I bought a 5D3! I BOUGHT A 5D3!")
earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn - down to earth types ("What do you care I have a 5D3?")

...and all that, of course, depending on in which of twelve celestial 'houses' or regions the sun was, when you were born. If you want more specifics, you can calculate where the moon and the planets were, so you have a nice set of zodiacal signs to explain your behaviour. Or, of course, you take responsibility for your own actions, but that seems to be less common.

United Kingdom & Ireland / Re: Jessops close to administration?
« on: January 09, 2013, 04:34:51 PM »
Firstly let me make this remark...'its a shame that so many people may be losing their jobs'....

Secondly, it is no wonder that places like Jessops have gone into admin....due to lack of good service in some of their shops, lack of knowledge by the staff. Boltons store went from a reasonably sized store where people could move about and they had quite a lot of different stock on shelving to a dingey little store tucked away where there was 1 or 2 ppl available at all times, if there were loads of ppl in the shop you were falling over each other.

Lastly, the price of goods being sold.....(of course they have had to mark up to take account of floor space, staff etc)...but the pricing has always been a downfall when you get equipment by shopping around or going to other 'dedicated' camera shops.....

Jessops in my mind was just like another Wildings.....jack of all trades and master of none

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon Cannot Keep Screwing It's Customers Over
« on: January 03, 2013, 11:59:59 AM »
As I have said before....the other issue is the pricing policy per market region (whoever it may be) and in some way Canon controls this via the sales & distribution plus control authorised dealers.

Even accounting for shipping, VAT or Sales Taxes etc......if you look at the Asia, Europe, UK, USA markets the pricing markups / concessions are ridiculous between the markets......

And before someone says it jokingly..'it's not viable to move!!'   :-*

There needs to be some sort of level playing field, one where customer loyalty comes higher on the chain!

EOS Bodies / Re: Shot wedding with 5DIII, dissapointed in AF
« on: January 02, 2013, 05:09:14 PM »
My wife and I shot a wedding yesterday, we brought two 5DII bodies, and one 5DIII body.  I didn't bring out the 5DIII until the reception because I didn't want to use it for the critical stuff until I've spent more time with it.  For the reception ( private room inside restaurant ) we were using the 85 f/1.2L II, 35 f/1.5L and 50 f/1.4.  I lost many good shots because the 5DIII took 2-3 seconds to focus.  I tested focusing in the low light with all the lenses, and the results were similar ( well, the 85 was even slower, because that lens is just slow focusing ).  For AF, I had "one shot" selected, and the center point with the 4 surrounding points.  I couldn't easily do a side by side because I didn't have two of any one lens, but I did switch lenses between the bodies and played around some.  The 5DIII was as slow, or possibly even slower than the 5DII to achieve focus.  The amout of natural light in the reception was around ISO1600, f/1.4 and 1/60.  Oh, and I had a flash on, putting out that red focus assist as well during all this testing!  Anyway, just giving people a heads up on what I experienced, and I've seen some others post the same.  I've also seen people post results of miraculous AF improvement with the 5DIII...

Theres a lot of discussion going on at the moment about the AF and the 5DMKIII - look here http://forums.usa.canon.com/t5/EOS/5D3-AF-assist-beam-slower-focus/m-p/2277#U2277

« on: December 26, 2012, 08:51:48 AM »
Personally, I alwasy says its what you feel to be right for the job at hand, what you feel comfy with and at the right cost.

Yes the 'L' series lenses will be top whack due to the extra quality of the lenses and all that resides with them (ie less distortion/vignetting) and at the f/stops your looking at the dof.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: right now i am not happy to be a canon user

Yes guys, the complaints may not get a person anywhere but allows the stress to be vented and sometimes allows others to form opinions of not only the products but all that surrounds it (ie servicing, repairs, customer care and so on)....and I can fully understand where they are coming from..

Here in Europe, when it not only comes to electronic products but software it feels as though we are propping up other markets (and yes this may be down to governments/taxes etc)...but it also comes across as a little contempt to the customer base outside of the asia/america continents from the manufacturers (whoever they me be!!!!!)

So yes, lets receive comments (whether negative or positive) but do not deride someone for their comments due to having possible bad service/products (just monitor, ask for further clarification or ignore and tlet the person get it off their chest)

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 6D Experience
« on: December 12, 2012, 03:48:31 PM »
Cheers for the above comments.

As an amateur and budgetary concerns are always in the minds of those that don't make money from photography I have been in the same state of mind.....as a current Canon 350D user with various lenses (dearest being £800) I have been looking at the Canon 7D, then came along the 6D and the possibility of moving to full frame but have had concerns about the low fps....especially as I take sports and nature shots mainly.....so it was then Canon MKIII

As we get very little 'sales reductions' on the goods from the various camera makers over here in the UK (you can literally say sometimes its pounds for dollar instead of the exchange rate) can you please tell me how the 6D handles fast moving imagery
