Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Sigma 35 f/1.4 DG HSM First Impressions

no surprise, just another L lense killer, has been waiting for this forever.

the APSC version 30mm F1.4 already beat the 35L from some reviews i see.....

Lenses / Re: Canon 85L 1.2 vs Sigma 85 1.4... Has anyone tried both?

While I have not worked with the Siggy 1.4, I have compared images of it on TDP: and the difference is pretty clear between the 2. If you go here about 1/3 of the way down you see a Picture of a Girl taken at different apertures with the 85L and the Siggy 1.4 against a forst/ green background next to a Black cast iron Fence.

I find the Bokeh of the 85L to be better.... but your mileage may vary since Boken is subjective... however

thanks for the link, i find it useful as it compare to other 85mm prime, but, from the Canon L, i can't see any difference between 1.2 vs 1.4.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Refurbished 5D MK3s?
« on: November 07, 2012, 10:13:03 AM »
i think its too early to have refurb product.

having refurb products will eat sales on new body, you agree?

didn't know the 7D is rated at -0.5 EV only.
the 5D is rated at -1EV and i find it performs alright, sometimes i still can't focus.
the 6D is rated at -3EV and i wonder how much of a difference that can make?

the newest copy of pop photo mag just test the Nikon D600, it mentioned at -1EV, the camera took long to lock focus, i guess it has to pay a price for having more AF points ? just like the 5D3?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 5D3 Color Balance vs 5D2

i have always heard from 5dc/2 owners saying files from 5dc come out better, or they like it better.

i guess that is exactly what the OP is referring to, some looks you just can't describe.

so OP, so the 5D3 is similar to the 5Dc? if so, i am interested!

Lenses / Re: Opinion: EF 24-70 f/4L IS & EF 35 f/2 IS

i like the 24-105L range as well, since it cover the classic portrait range, 85mm, 90mm, 100mm as well, the 24-70 fell short in this regard on a FF.

if the $8xx price is right, hopefully white box coming out from 6D kit will sell for less in the 2nd hand market.

The 5D classic is a pretty solid camera. I had one for a year and a half and just upgraded to the d700. I think it was a great camera, especially for a first time FF user.

EchoLocation, mind sharing how the D700 excel over the 5Dc/5D2? i am using a 5Dc and am eye-ing on a D700 as well, don't like the focus system from 5D2/6D/D600, i like the coverage from the D700, and can't afford the 5D3.

to the OP, i often use ISO3200, with minor NR, i don't mind using that ISO all day long, i upgrade from T1i, and think the upgrade is definitely worth it..... the DOF is just something i do appreciate over the crop, even with all the cons, such as poor LCD, limited ISO, no anti-dust, etc....

why upgrade from 5Dc to 5D2? is it the magapixel that you need? or the video? or to shoot above ISO 3200?

if not, stay with your 5Dc, they both have the same crappy AF.

I have the 85mm F1.8, and recently borrow a Sigma 85mm, i would seriously suggest the latter. the colour / contrast is just much better.

for the 50mm, how about the Sigma? i've got one and love it so much....

Canada / Re: Smugmug in Canada
« on: October 26, 2012, 10:21:25 AM »
i rarely come to this regional forum, but i got to put two thumbs up for Smugmug.  I am in Canada as well.

i did consider Zenfolio couple years back, and the two drawback make me go with Smugmug.

1. no video at that time, i understand they finally have it now  ???
2. upload speed at my work, Smugmug is A LOT faster.

Layout wise, i like Smugmug more.

search for coupon code on web to save $15-20 bucks  ;)

i once read comments from, and a photographer with both OMD EM5 and the Nikon V1 claim the Nikon AF to be in a different league, that is the tracking ability is much better.

the m4/3 is already fast in still, but tracking is still lacking.

The Nikon hybrid AF seems to be the best AF system for now, but they benefit from a smaller sensor, lighter/smaller glass for the speed i guess.

if Nikon ever come up with a similar 1 system but with APS-C, i will be all over it.

i just can't believe the OP complain ISO 400 from a somewhat new T1i. especially you are printing 4x6.

i used to own that T1i, i use up to ISO 1600 all the time if i print 4x6, 3200 doesn't look that bad too.

i guess slight noise really bother some photographer.  ;D

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Pricing
« on: October 24, 2012, 11:20:25 AM »
I seriously don't know why 35mm cost that much more to make than the 50mm, ok, i know 50mm is the easiest to make, 85mm F1.4 being more expensive i can understand it, the aperture in diameter is actually larger, but 35mm aperture diameter will be smaller too.

it use a smaller filter size compare to the 50mm & 85mm brother, so in theory, the manufacture use less glass.

but since i have been wiating for this 35L alternative for so long, i will still buy it!

Sigma, make the 24L and 135L alternative please!

what i really hope from them is a A88, to counter the D600 and 6D, after all, Sony is the one who introduce the budget FF, the A99 is still too much $ for me.

Thanks again Phil.

I will take your advice and go for it, i don't mind not taking entire advantage of the fast card, as long as it get rid of my wait, i am satisfy.

hopefully the 1000X Lexar do live up the name over the 600X Sandisk EP.
