I was really hoping for this lens to be 2.8 with IS.

EOS Bodies / 580 or 600 for 1D Mark IV
« on: June 05, 2012, 04:50:22 PM »
I'm debating which flash  would be the better choice when mated with my 1d Mark 4. If I'm not misraken the New 600 is rhe the newer vodies. I don't expect Canon to have a firmware update to work with the new flash. What do you guys think? Rhanks in advance!

I'm just really hoping that there will finally be a few original 500 f4 going on the used market soon.  They seem to be very hard to find right now...at least here in southern Ontario.

I have a feeling the price of version 1 used is going to climb because of the price increase of v2. I bought a V1 500F4 brand new in December 2011 after I saw the anticipated increase of the upcoming. I understand there maybe a couple of stops better with the new IS and it's noticeable lighter but these long lenses now are mostly unreachable in price.

I can see most replies to this thread show disappointment with the new pricing. What really scared me is Sony just released their version of the 500F4 and they want $13,000.

Can't say I've owned the 100-400 but I use my 70-300 frequently and find it to be very contrasty, sharp with great IS (4-stop) but the deciding point might be the reach and when used with a full frame, the 100-400 might be more appealing. Don't listen to the myth about the push pull being a vacuum. I hear its a perpetuated myth.

Makes be glad I bought mine 5 months ago for 4000.00 less.

Interesting how the Canon logo or the BG-E11 model # are not stamped on the front of the grip.
It's a genuine grip...I got mine yesterday and it's logo free.
But wow, this thing is BIG! Back to back with my 1D Mk4 the 5D3 with BG-E11 is taller, thicker and feels bigger in the hand. I'll put them both on the scales later but the weight difference isn't that much.

Mostly I use 1-Series bodies, my last 5D was the Classic. The 5D3 with BG-E11 is way bigger. The 5D series has grown!

Looks like a great fit but I'm a little blown away that it weighs more than the 1D Mark IV.
PW

Later: OK here are the weights. Are you ready for this? The 1D Mk4 with battery is 1375 grams and the 5D Mk3 with BG-E11 & two batteries is a beefy 1406 grams. Wow! I used to pack the old 5D as a lighter weight option.

I've owned this bag since January and I have nothing but praise for it's quality. I find I'm reaching the limit of gear it can hold but then again I have a 500 F4 dedicated to one side. Guaranteed if you're not using a long lens, there is plenty of space for your needs.

The sail cloth and zippers ensure a long lasting bag. They give you plenty of extra dividers to customize it to your needs. Admittedly, it's an expensive bag but it will last many years of painless stowing of expensive camera equipment safely.

I realize the birding community overall is small in the big picture of but I hope they address the F8 enigma for those who can't get their hands on 1D series. For that reason alone I grabbed a Mark IV just last week. I'm sure the 1Dx is a VERY competent advisary and Nikon shooters use full frame successfully but I still believe that Canon is superb comparitively in IQ when extenders are necessary.

Lenses / Re: Canon Refurb Store ... Not Such A Good Deal
« on: May 08, 2012, 12:40:21 AM »
I bought a 1D Mark IV last week refurbished when you couldn't buy a new one easily anywhere except on ebay. Now a new one if you buy will cost you 1500.00 more than what I paid. As said researching is key in getting a deal.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Canon ID Mark IV availability?
« on: May 02, 2012, 07:44:26 PM »
I've kept an active watch on Canon's refurbished and lucked out. Thank you everyone and especially to Mike. They removed the ID Mark IV off of the refurbished a while back and I removed the link. If it wasn't for Mike, I might not have been lucky enough to get one at this price.

You're welcome to close this thread.
