Lenses / Re: Lightweight lens for backpacking and bicycle touring

I would get the 10-22mm. One of the widest choices for a crop sensor and pretty decent for the money. Not the sharpest of lens, though!

I have the non L 100 macro and love that lens, but I just didn't know if the upgrade was justifiable..

Lenses / 135mm vs. 100mm macro
« on: April 15, 2013, 06:48:37 PM »
I just bought the 135mm and am looking forward to using it; however, I was torn before I bought with the possibility of getting the 100mm L. I am planning on using this range for weddings, portraits, and general events. Would you choose the 100 because of the IS? Interested in your thoughts! Thanks!

Lenses / Insurance on camera equipment
« on: April 11, 2013, 11:31:35 AM »
How many of you have insurance on your camera gear? I have reached the point where I'm feeling pretty dumb for not already having something.

Any advice on where to begin my research?

Thanks!

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Long exposures won't record to 5d mark iii
« on: March 30, 2013, 12:26:16 AM »
This is an upsetting thing for me, considering what I love the most is doing startrails. I took my camera out tonight, slapped on the 17mm ts-e and tried to do a 20 minute exposure. Once I was done, the red processing light remained on for a good five minutes...I turned the camera off and a screen popped up saying, "recording image to disk"...I let this screen run for 10mins before taking my battery out and killing the cycle.

Has anyone run into this problem?

Do I have a defective mark iii?

I have yet to do any firmware updates..

My first thought was my memory card is not fast enough, but it's sandisk extreme cf 60mb/s. I tried an "extreme pro" 90mb/s and I ran into the same issue.

Any help would be wonder as this is really bumming me out :(

Ps: 30 sec exposures take about 45secs to record and pop up as a preview....

Thanks!

Lenses / Re: Need your opinions on selling my 50L and 24/70L
« on: March 25, 2013, 11:56:15 AM »
Thank you For all of your responses. I guess my real question for all the 50 mm L-series users out there was: is the 50mm 1.4 not enough. I could sell my 50 L and my old version of the 24 – 70 to purchase the newest version of the 24 – 70 and still have money left over to buy the 50mm 1.4.

Thanks again.

Lenses / Need your opinions on selling my 50L and 24/70L
« on: March 24, 2013, 10:45:20 PM »
So I have the 50mm L and the first version of the 24-70mm L. If I were to sell them both on eBay, I could afford the second version of the 24-70...I just bought the 70-200 IS f/2.8 II and have been blown away with its sharpness and would love to have that kind of sharpness in the 24-70 range.

My question is: do you think it's worth giving up my 50L to pursue this, and why or why not? I love the 1.2 and I'd probably eventually buy the 85mm 1.2 down the road

What are your thoughts?!?

Thanks! : 8)

The 17mm ts-e is quite the monster of lens. I love it, but I am so frightened when using it!

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 5D mark III auto focus (newb) question!
« on: February 20, 2013, 10:04:19 PM »
I'm an accountant full time. I just bought a 5d not too long ago and haven't really had a good sit down with her. My question is about the way the auto focus picks what to focus on. On my 7d, I never had to do any kind of adjusting; I always felt it just kind of knew what I was trying to focus and would do it, but as of right now my 5d only selects the very middle of each frame? Is there a quick way to allow the camera to pick what it believes to be best?

I know this question is ridiculous, but I have little to no time during tax season!

Thank you!

5D Mark III | 7D | 17mm TS-E f/2.8 | 24-70mm f/2.8 L | 50mm f/1.2 L | 70-200mm f/2.8 II IS | 100mm f/2.8 Macro | ST-E3 | (x3) 600 ex

New additions?  Congrats!  ;D

(Note - the TS-E 17mm is f/4.)

Whoops!

Thank you!

I'm in the mood for a piece of fruit. Should I have an apple or an orange?

Apple.

I shouldn't buy them both.

I disagree.  You should buy them both.   :P

+1

Thanks!

I am torn. I shoot both weddings, and shoot real estate. I shoot both wide life and the night sky. I shouldn't buy them both. Which one would you choose and why?

Lenses / Re: Canon 24-70 ii - another superlative
« on: January 16, 2013, 11:56:05 AM »
The price is extreme, regardless of the results. I am wanting the 70-200 2.8 mk ii or I could sell my 24-70 mk i and put that money towards the mk ii version...but why? I have loved my 1st version since the day I bought it! On the 5D mark iii, is the first version of the 24-70 not enough? Yes, the new version is sharper and all around the better lens, but again, is version one simply being wrote off? I believe it delivers. I think I will wait for a price drop before upgrading. Here is a 24-70mm 2.8 mk i example using a polarizer filter and HDR mode on the 5D mark iii. Please note, I am posting this from a snapshot of the original using my cellphone.
