Software & Accessories / Re: Need Backpack recommendations

I use this bag and I love it - a 5d mkII with 70-200mm f/2.8 on plus 3-4 other lenses is no problem at all and it has a cool urban style look where no one thinks it is actually a camera bag ...

Crawley boatshed HDR

Really nice framing and color balance in this shot. I like it.

Black & White / Your best Architectural & City B&W shots?
« on: July 18, 2011, 07:21:00 AM »
In contrast to the very colorful pictures we see here most of the time, I would like you to show your best B&W city and architectural shots. (true B&W which means made in the cam, monochromes and reworked B&Ws all welcome)

I think this is a quite nice way for people to see an entirely different style of photography which emphasis more the pure form and shows a very different capability of the cameras and lens used when compared to color photos.

Please keep size and number of your postings reasonable and I hope everyone will enjoy this.

Here are my first entries and I hope to see many more spectacular pictures of you soon :-)

Well the AF thing is also one thing I can tell you about, having a 5d MKII you def need sth with better AF for action shots.

The strength of the 5d MKII is Landscape, architecture, portraits under controlled distances ... but really really nothing that needs a fast AF or one that works reliable when it is very dark ...

I've been pretty tolerant of high prices from Canon. But, my threshold has been breached. $13,000.00 for a 600mm lens? Do they really expect to sell them for that? On general principles, I expect those who can afford it will wait until it falls to $11,000 or so. Even then, it's super high priced. I suspect this could be a ploy to empty the coffers of the old designs.

Well I am quite sure that we will see lower street prices after the Olympic Games in London ... but good timing for Canon to let all the Press Agencies/ Pros upgrade their equipment before ... I guess that the 200-400 f/4.0 TC 1.4 will also be available quite some time before ...

This is just typical Japanese business practice!  The cost of development or getting manufacturing right has risen, so they're going to pass those costs on to the end customer, not for them a reduced profit margin, they're so blinkered & greedy, & have such little respect for their customers that it's passed on.

Well I won't be buying any of them at these prices, and if they think that this will assist them in their competetiveness with Nikon they've got another thing comming!  The new lenses are almost double the street price of the old ones, and 50% dearer than the Nikon equivalents, at this level that's a lot of money, enough to buy a body.  If I were a user of this type of lens then I'd be switcing away from a company which shows me no respect and doesn't really care whether I stay with them or not.

Was just thinking about certain US and European defense contractors in regards to businesses with their own governments ... Lockheed Martin F 35 lightning or Airbus A400M anyone ;-) ...

Well I think you give a good answer yourself saying that with 5dII you won't have a wide angle and standard zoom ... this will usually cost you many good shots and the 7d is not that bad ... anyway it is a strong upgrade from the 1000d ...
while 5dII will be replaced soon and you might a used one much cheaper in the future or have enough saving to buy the whole minimum package: which is for me Wide angle zoom, standard zoom and tele zoom ...

Sorry Chris, whilst I really liked your photos of birds in the other thread, these pictures look too artificial, I'm not sure if it's a case of extreme tweaking of levels or HDR, but they aren't to my taste...  Otherwise, some lovely compositions !

I kind of agree with you on the last one, however I like it the way this comes out ... I mean seeing many of the best pictures (HDR and non HDR ones) you start to realize that much of this is not real but quite artificial (12mm or 14mm lens on FF landscapes anyone ... ??? ) ...

I guess it just comes down to what kind of subject and effect everyone likes. Personally I am just looking around whatever I think looks good on a certain subject and post process it that way ... strange looking experiments included ;-)

For this last one the sunstar is kind of amazing when you see at full size ...

On the other hand I am also doing B&W shots or natural out of the camera ones ...

I went through your flickr photos and I felt that I have already seen them somewhere else. Are you an author of a book or maybe something online ?

Regarding your photos, I understand that this is a theme where some won't like it due to taste, similar as lots of people might dislike a classic horror movie because they don't like the genre, not because the movie is bad.

Regarding the HDR technique, is the high saturation really needed ?

EDIT: forgot to tell you that I do like lots of your photos especially the ones of the old city.

If you find out where you saw them I would really like to know as I have not done any published work and that would of course be in my own interest if someone else is using them ... So besides some blogs, forums, FB and of course flickr not at any place that I know of ...
You can of course also send me a private email regarding that matter ... thank you in advance

Your opinion about HDR is basically the same as mine ... sometimes I want to scream when I see the really heavily over processed psychedelic ones ... however then there are such pictures of this class and I really like them cause they just work...

Regarding HDR in general even people like Trey Redcliff (stuck in customs) have good and bad HDRs, if you look at his work. Many ppl. do like a certain pictures there while they just completely dislike others for some reason ... still I don't know why HDR gets some ppl to really not like a certain shot ... I mean in general ppl. who use a cam need to realize that what they see on their pictures is not the reality but just a composition of the lens, the sensor/film and the maybe following post processing ...

Third question: The saturation level is adjustable ... maybe I tend to be a little too colorful from time to time ;-) ... Too much sugar in my coffee lately ???

Those are some pretty nice shot. The "colorful friend" lives up to its title :) . May I ask what equiptment you used?

Also... n00b question... But is there a way to post pictures from a Smugmug? I'm away from my computer, and it won't let me select from my iPad.

Hi equipment for all of these was 5d MKII with the 70-200 f/2.8 IS2 some also with the TC 2x III

Post your Bird Portraits here :-)

Parrots, Birds of Prey, Herons and all the others ... Just post your portraits here :-)

The main idea of this topic is that the bird is clearly the main part component of the picture and that it is not a bird in flight or small bird on large tree or group shot ...

I will start with some of mine to start the whole :-)
Have fun everyone and I hope to see many amazing shots soon:

Please post your reflective pictures of liquid reflections in a natural setting here :-)

Entries could be ocean/shorelines, rivers/creeks, lakes, ice, air ... no matter where ... only that there should not be manmade structures in the main focus of the picture or artificial reflections on glass, chrome, steel etc ...

To give you an idea I will start this with some of mine and hope you will soon add more :-)
