My next lens will be the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II. I just decided to sell my 300 f/4 IS and 70-200 f/2.8 non IS to cover the cost. I've been doing a fair bit of event coverage lately and the IS would be a great help. I think I can live with converters with the IS II and won't miss the 300 f/4 all that much.

It all makes perfect sense except that the price tag is supposed to be 800$. Is that the entry-level? O.o

Sometimes it's more expensive to make something smaller. And just because it's smaller doesn't mean it has to be a lower level.

The question is will the build quality be good enough to satisfy people used to XXD or XD bodies. I've read that the EOS-M build quality is good and I hope this follows suit.

And if a body only version is available for $699 that's reasonable. I have no desire for any EF-S kit lens.

edit: deleted, I got the D3200 weight wrong, this is actually about 15% lighter than a D3200

It's also significantly smaller than the D3200. The D3200 is basically the same size as the T3; the EOS-b is a lot smaller.

I just had a thought. Maybe it's not a "b" at all maybe it's the musical flat symbol. So the new body is a half step lower than an EOS.

yet another disappointment from canon. old sensor, order specs, outrageous price. why can't they just accept the future of the sub 1000 camera body is mirror-less. enough with this surplus parts revel crap.

Because it's not solely. Sure, if you don't want to shoot anything that moves. This body might bring all the features of the EOS-M plus phase detect AF when desired with a modest increase in size. I'm going to take a good look at it and I've never considered getting a rebel before.

The weight is in the panasonic G3 class - amazing. And the lens mount looks h-u-g-e!

Looks pretty much like an EOS-M with a prism housing - size wise.

Pretty good value for the money, I'd say.

As small as it is, what this camera needs is a 20mm 2.8 ef-s pancake as a companion lens.

+1. I almost ordered an EOS-M from BB at $549 yesterday. If this camera in live view operates like the EOS-M and has the option of faster operation with the mirror down it might be a winner. But I agree it needs a small fast prime. a 20 or 22mm pancake would be perfect.

Well, the rumored small DSLR was specced with Digic 5. Unlikely they'd announce a powershot with a more advanced processor at the same time. So I'd guess one or the other is an error.

But then, what do I know.

I've said this before. Although bulkier and heavier, I appreciate the hood setup on the old 24-70 for moving around without a lens cap on. When you bring the barrel back to 70mm there's a lot of protection there. And when the barrel is extended, it's all inside the hood.

Not so with the new lens, where the barrel has no protection at all when extended. If I knock up against something with the old lens, or drag it through the brush, nothing touches the lens itself.

Just my preference, I guess.

So...putting your lens cap on might cause it to not be able to AF without taking the lens off and on?

Yeah, that's something that shouldn't have made it past QC testing.

True. It's happened to me putting the lens cap back on. It's not hard to get in the practice of retracting the lens first, though. And you don't have to remove the lens just rotate it a bit and re lock it.

I stil love the lens.

I'd like to know whether the new EF-M lenses will fit on a DSLR.  The 22mm F2 would be great on a crop body.

I would think not. The lens would have to be inside the lens mount on the camera due to the shorter mount to sensor distance. That's why the adapter for EF lenses.

Not sure I understand the point of having the pancake be larger (with adapter) on a mirrorless than it is on a 5D. But then, I'm sure the aim is to sell the lenses with the new mount.
