Reviews / Re: Tony Northrup - D810 vs. 5D Mk3
« on: August 08, 2014, 04:14:57 PM »
Well.....

Last week I swapped D800/D4 for D4s/D810.
Long story short - 5D MkII and 5D MkIII get equal usage as the Nikons do.
They all have their merits and strengths.

Most of the people dissing one or the other can't compare from
first hand experience. That simple.

There are no real rumors about the long-awaited M3.

From somebody who should be in the know I got just one comment: It's coming!

Leads me to believe that photokina the latest we will know, too.

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: D810!!!

For still photography the improvements overall seem incremental,
with just one exception: "The d810 has the same AF module as the D4S",
says the German Nikon website.

So, there will be a D4S out soon as well.

The biggest upgrade though is in video mode with 1080 p60 available
and many other video details improved.

Yes, this looks like a very good piece of equipment.

It could as well be a global shutter based on this technology.
No more X-sync barrier, no more rolling shutter problems.

Case? Pocket of my jacket.

Go to the nightlies section in the ML forum, select the matching platform and download.

About battery life: For longer tripod based video recordings
I have an AC adapter, and 5x 3rd party batteries to go when
I'm out on the road. I paid 38 dollars for the 5 batteries with
a dedicated charger that can not only charge from mains
power but also charge from USB and car plug adapter.

I prefer carrying a bunch of small spare batteries over lugging
a bigger camera.

Also, the battery dummy of the AC adapter can be hooked to
a professional power supply plate like the Lanparte and be
fueled by either V-mount or Anton/Bauer gold mount batteries.

About the special laptop: That for sure ran a prerelease version
of DPP with the new camera included. And how to judge color accuracy?
Simple: Process pictures from a current camera as well and compare.

I'm pro, and initially skipped the M because of
the discrepancy of AF performance and price.

Now that it dropped so dramatically in price,
buying it was a no-brainer.

And wow - I can't remember having had so much
fun with a camera ever before.

Unless Canon really bogs it with a hypothetical M3,
I would be sure to buy it for any price within reason
or at least below 1000 dollars, body only.

And I would definitely buy a 55-250 IS STM in M mount.

Hear me, Canon?

EOS Bodies / Re: More Sensor Technology Talk [CR1]

The patent for the sensor has been posted here in May last year,
and my opinion is that the (working!) engineering sample of a
120 MP APS-C body that Canon has exhibited was the first time
we have actually seen this sensor.

I expect at least a development announcement for Photokina,
if not a working sample of at least one new camera with this
technology.

No, the technology does not have Foveons problems, as can be
seen when you compare both patents.

5D Mark FREE.......

A1ex and Chris_overseas solved the bootflag problem,
ML now installs without any problems to cameras running
firmware 1.2.3.

You find a bleeding edge version in the nightlies.

Use at your own risk.

Hint:
Install with an original battery or a third party
battery that spawns no camera complains.

Or keeps your fingers to yourself until the installer
finishes behind the battery nag screen.

While global shutter is indeed very welcome in the video world,
it would at the same time eliminate x-sync in still photography
and overcome many of the problems that have led to the current
flood of HyperSync/SuperSync/overdrive flash triggers.

Regarding flash this would be a milestone, kill the need for HSS and Co.

I am anxiously looking forward to global shutters in still photography.

Canon General / Re: Canon Germany Teaser
« on: July 19, 2013, 02:29:53 AM »
The German weblink leads to a registration page for
something called YouConnect and says that this will
be a new way to publish imagery (or otherwise distribute
material to your target audience).

Probably they are tuning their Canon Image Gateway.
I have never seen anybody use it.
