EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 5D3 Live View exposure off
« on: April 26, 2013, 06:38:22 PM »
I've tested this on three 5D3's and the one body clearly has a problem.  It has nothing to do with live simulation of exposure.  Also, when shutter is pressed mechanisms appear to both work the same.  So I'll send it back and hopefully I don't have to pay for anything to get it fixed.

Most home owners policies will reimburse you for what you spend replacing the equipment.  So I would buy from a reputable dealer where you know you will have a warranty.  You aren't "saving any money" because insurance will want to see your receipt from the purchase.  I went through this with a diamond ring a year ago.  If you pick out something that's half the price to replace it with, then that's all they are paying you, not the full price of what you originally paid.

So go ahead and pay full price from somewhere you trust.  Same for the lens.

I think the setting is "screen simulates exposure" . Don't have anything with me , but I think its what you need.

I will check that out, but I had identical settings on both cameras and one was perfect and the other one was not.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 5D3 Live View exposure off
« on: April 26, 2013, 10:10:49 AM »
I recently got back my 5D3 from CPS after dropping it.  Everything was fine until I went to take some macro shots using Live View.  Exposure seems way way off.  It looks fine on screen, but comes out about 100 times darker than it should.  If I take it off Live View and shoot regular, exposure is exactly what I want.  Doing this on another 5D3 I don't have this problem.

It seems really weird to me this would be happening, and I'll probably just send it back to CPS for checking out, but I wanted to see if anyone else had experienced this and if they resolved it on their own.

Thanks,
-Chris

Lenses / Re: Insurance on camera equipment
« on: April 17, 2013, 07:58:56 PM »
Insure your gear!  I recently dropped my 5D3 and 70-200 f/2.8 L IS.  Repairs (after platinum CPS discount) were $680.  I have a $100 deductible.  I'm paying about $450 to insure $15,000 worth of gear plus $1,000,000 in liability.  All State Farm needed was me to forward the invoice from CPS.  No other questions, and you don't have to specifically list what equipment you have, so if you buy something new it's automatically covered up to your total amount of coverage.

Like someone else said, if you make money from your gear you'll need a separate policy.

One word?  Sixdy!  hah!

Let's see what Canon says for real on it.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 7D to 5D III upgrade..worth it?

7D to 5DIII upgrade is totally worth it.  Buy 2 if you can!  :-)

That's the answer I needed.  Too bad it wasn't the answer I wanted.  haha.

Thanks a bunch!

Lighting / 600EX-RT as remote trigger for Paul C. Buff White Lightning
« on: August 07, 2012, 12:54:04 PM »
I ordered PocketWizards to do use as remote triggers for a White Lightning X1600 that I just ordered, but I'm wondering if I could have saved some money by using the 600EX-RT as a remote trigger for the strobe?  Can I just use a flash sync cable for this?

As others have said, you can't really compare the two.  If you are shooting once in a lifetime moments (weddings, newborns, etc.) then having the backup of dual memory cards makes it worth the money.  Are you going to shoot in potentially wet situations?  The Rebel may not hold up.  Do you need spot on AF in almost every area of the view finder, or will 9 points meet your needs?  Do you need lens microadjustments, or are you fine with a lens being slightly off?  There are a billion questions you need to ask yourself.  Maybe sit down and put dollar amounts to them.

Would it be cool to have a 1DX?  Yes.  Do I need to shoot 12 fps?  No, at least not yet.  Same types of questions for completely different classes of cameras.

If you need full frame, then go with the 5DIII.  If not, and you don't need a camera right away, maybe holding out for the 70D is a better option.  But again, you have to ask yourself all the same questions.

I didn't have to justify the need for a 5DIII, nor did I have to justify the need for two of them.  The work we do requires it, and it has paid off.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 5D3 weather sealing...
« on: May 20, 2012, 02:01:05 PM »
I see sealing in all the important places.  I tried shooting some lightning as a storm was coming in and it got a little wet, but I wouldn't call it a significant amount of moisture.

EOS Bodies / Re: Mirrorless Vs Regular DSLR -- Your thoughts???
« on: May 17, 2012, 11:29:47 PM »
I honestly have no need for one.  We had two point and shoots that I recently got rid of.  They took up space.  If I need something unobtrusive I have my iPhone.  iPhone doesn't take great pictures, but that's why I have a 5DIII and tons of kit.  My only problem is not having the DSLR with me everywhere I go.  I carry it more than I did a point and shoot though.

I'm curious why you think a 3 model might be different?  I have a 1, and it works perfectly.

I totally agree.  It's an amazing camera.  Huge step up from the 7D, and that was no slouch.

I just received three 600EX-RTs last night from Amazon, and I love them already.  So easy to setup.  I've had two 430EXIIs and a PocketWizard Flex system (two FlexTT5 and one MiniTT1).  So I am going to sell those now and offset the cost of the new 600s.  I don't do strobes of any kind.
