good question, but highly doubt this service is done. Kits are built by dumping components into a box over the course of an assembly line. Matching lenses to bodies would increase costs which would significantly reduce Canons ability to price both camera and lens together at a lower cost compared to each sold separately.

The 6D is the "almost, but not quite" camera... maybe, just maybe canon will get its act together and release an API for devs to improve in the area where Canon has failed so miserably at, and that's the iOS app that doesn't even scale to the iPhone screen. It sucks, and sucks terribly.
Shame on Canon for omitting an integrated intervalometer, full raw or jpeg transfer to iPad, and video control. Such features would give the 6D more appeal than the lackluster appeal it already struggles to get. Canon's marketing department clearly smashed the hands of the software team from including such useful features.... sad, so sad to see the hardware capabilities of the 6D limited to what it is. O, wait! maybe we'll see a "legendary" firmware update that Canon loves to pimp as a new feature!

That review almost swayed me, but I went with the 5D2 anyways for build quality, ergonomics, and size. The 6D is too small

The 5D2 has less moire than the 6D, with the 5D3 providing the best video quality. That said, the 5D2 is unbeatable considering price, build, and overall value. Personally, the 5D3 can be skipped until the 5D4 is released if you are a 5D2 user. The AF is the largest differentiating factor of the 5D3 compared to the 5D2, with the 6D serving as almost a joke in Canon's lineup... even though the IQ is great, the rest of the camera falls apart and destroys any appeal as an option, even if the current offering at b+h is only $100 more than the 5D2 kit.

Who cares anyhow... not many here will buy it anyway when the 24-70 II is a few hundred more and provides optical quality far superior than any other L zoom in Canons portfolio.
We will see the price elasticity of the 24/70 f4 adjust QUICKLY, which will eventually supplement the 6D and other lower tiered FF bodies as a kit lens and possibly kick the 24-105 out on its own as an option just like any other L lens. I also think we will see he price of the 24-105 increase when it is no longer packaged as a kit lens. There is no reason why an L zoom like the 24/70 f4, with its inferior optical quality, is priced more than the 24-105.

Canon responds with the 5D3 with a permanent rebate. At the very least, we have Nikon to thank for providing supplements and keeping canons greed in check (to some extent).

« on: January 14, 2013, 02:13:31 AM »This basically confirms my first impressions of the new 24-70 (sharpness issue aside). The new 24-70 offers pretty much nothing when compared to the 24-105 except a macro mode with 0.7 magnification and is not an upgrade from the 24-105.
I doubt anyone who got the 24-105 will "upgrade" to the f/4 24-70. The inbuilt macro of the 24-70 is a non-issue because you could get the excellent 100L macro and also save some $$$.
I guess Canon might phase out the 24-105 but then Canon's marketing strategy is impossible to comprehend.
Looking forward to the Tamron review.

I really, really hope Canon doesn't phase out the 24/105L. It is such a fabulous lens.... and for what? A crappy 24-70 F4! No thanks...
If they do and my 24-105 ever fails and is unserviceable, ill spring for the 24-70 f/2.8 II

If my depth of field is that tight and the possibility of focus shift is evident when using this method, I'll quickly turn on live view, zoom in a bit, and achieve focus MANUALLY. Practice a bit, and this gets fast.

I forgot to mention that, yes, I've used both the 5D3 and 6D for a few days each and STILL went for the 5D2... I particularly can't stand the 6D's ergonomics. The multi directional pad is missing and feels like a cheap rebel. The only feature of both the 5D3 and 6D that I envy is the silent shutter mode. The 5D2 is a loud monster.

I just bought the 5D2 over both the 5D3 and 6D for the following reasons:
1. The 5D3 is not representative of its price pertaining to features compared with 5D2 (other than AF).
2. The build quality of the 6D and ergonomics is in no way better than the 5D2.
3. The 5D2's AF is NOT BAD AT ALL for those who know what they are doing.
4. The IQ is literally the same between all 3 cameras, aside from the ISO improvements of the 6D and 5D3
5. You can't beat a 5D2 with 24-105 kit for $2299. IT WAS A STEAL... THANKS AMAZON!!!!!
6. The money saved allowed me to justify a 70-200L IS II.
I am 1000 percent happy with the 5D2, including the AF which a lot of folks love to hate. Having said that, I'm not tracking birds with a 600L or on the side of a football game machine gunning. Possibly those folks need the extra AF points and most likely don't care about the price since their organization pays the bill anyways.
I will use the $h!t out of this camera until the 5D4 is released around 2016 or so. Hopefully we will see a new generation in sensor design (not that the 5D3 and 6D are bad) that is clearly not simply an incremental upgrade in IQ.

According to the 6D manual, AF points are selectable by using both wheels to move the AF point both vertically and horizontally to the desired position. Yes, the joystick is nice, but you still have this option; which may be faster.

Btw, I've been a long time reader of this site and love everything about it, I started with canon back when the t2i was released, had a 7D and the holy trinity of 2.8's until it was all stolen in Hawaii (island bottom feeding thieves). Hosing insurance covered the loss, helped supplement the cost of my new truck instead of imaging equipment.
The lack of however led me to buy the 24-70 II when it was on sale for $1999, waiting for a good bottom price point for the 5D3 kit...

I've been wanting to buy a 5D3 kit, but unable to do so until the 7th, which is two days after all canon rebates expire. The 5D3 kit was $3499 as of last night on amazon and now lists at $3699. My questions:
1. Based on the past, what does canon typically do in January concerning rebates?
2. Can anyone explain the drastic fluctuation with the 5D3 kit price? In less than a year, I see that it is anywhere from $3499 to $4299. The price elasticity is insane.... but remain hopeful we can see $3499 again, too bad I missed the boat this month.
