All are very good.. I own the Canon 50 1.4 and the 85 1.8 and tend to lean toward the 85 with FF because I like the tighter shots. Most of my shots are my son or wife/son, so not a lot of group shots. With some room, 2-4 people group shots are doable IMO. I do find AF a litter faster on the 85 as well with my Mark III.

You will lose just a little low light capability with the 85 or 100, in both aperture and need for faster shutter speed to compensate for the focal length.

Never owned the 100 but I hear its nearly identical in performance to the 85 with just a little longer reach and a 1/3 less stop. That being said I would get the 85 because its usually $50-75 cheaper

Pricewatch Deals / Re: Canon 6D - Meike grip on ebay for under $40

I had a Meike grip on my 60D and it was solid and fully functional. I was thinking about getting a grip for the 5D3 and if I did I would be perfectly happy getting this brand. Build qty is decent for that price

Lenses / New Lens Purchase Dilemma
« on: December 24, 2012, 09:43:55 AM »
Merry Christmas everyone...

So Ive sort of narrowed down my next lens choice but kinda of wanted to get some feedback on the following. If you had 1K to spend which would you choose? I do really want to do macro stuff but could probably live without true 1.1. Other primary function would be indoor shots of my son and wife. Here is options below as I figure all would be about the same cost. I tend to use the long end of my 24-105 when shooting.

100L F/2.8 IS + LR4 (Rocking LR3 right now)
135L F/2 + Set of Extension Tubes
100 F/2.8 USM + 85mm F1.8 + 40mm F.28

Thanks..

I almost pulled the trigger on the Mark II multiple times when I kind of wore and outgrew my XSI. When it was finally time to upgrade, the Mark II about three years into the production schedule and with rumors abound I waited a little longer. I wanted to start getting into video when my son was born so I bought a 60D figuring it would hold me off for 12-18 months. I still planned on getting the Mark II when they did finally release the Mark III due to the assumed price drops  but when I got the Mark III for $2499 it was tough to pass up.

17-55 F2.8 if you plan on having crop for at least another year or two because its a fast lens with IS, however I had the 24-105L with my 60D and thought it was great for both crop and FF. Its probably my favorite lens even more so then the 50, 70-200 or 100-400L I have in my bag.

At 38mm (FF equivalent its a tad long for landscapes), whereas the 27mm (FF equivalent on the EF-S is a bit wider)

I was tempted by the 17-55, but I refused to buy a lens that only worked with crop sensor cameras. I did it once with my 60mm Macro, but never again. When I go FF I don't want to have to deal with switching glass.

Its a small hassle switching glass but at the same time you don't lose out on the great shots you can get with the lens and body combination you have. The 60mm macro is a great lens for a crop sensor. I had the 100mm Macro on my XSI and felt it was too long for anything but macro so I sold it. The 60mm is more versatile for portraits and other things.

I just sold my 10-22 that I bought for $570 and sold for $525 after owning it for a year. The better EF-S (10-22, 17-55, 15-85, and 60) lens maintain their value almost as well L glass.

On my trip to Dubai I was able to fit the Burj Khalifa in the frame with my 60D/10-22 combination which something I wasn't able to do with my 24-105L at the time.

I got mine for $2499 on Black Friday from BigValue... Shipping was somewhat slow as I got the camera Dec 3rd about 9 days after ordering.

Whether the warranty is valid or not, they are US models and not grey market. I also have to pay tax at NY stores like BH and Amazon. They are in NJ and it was straight up 2499 so it was hard to pass up.

Thanks neuro, just a quick followup...

I was on the FoCal website and looking over the different options Standard, Plus, Pro. Looks like the plus has fully automatic operation so just wondering if anyone has tried the difference between them

Price for Plus in USD was about the same as the datacolor

Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / AFMA - 5D3
« on: December 07, 2012, 08:52:27 AM »
All,

Know this has been discussed somewhat in the past but I usually didnt pay too much attention as my 60D didnt have AFMA. I recently upgraded to a 5D3 that does and would like to adjust my 50 F1.4 and 24-105 which may be slightly off.

Vaguely what do you suggest and why?

I know there are crude free methods to do it but I also have a $50 Adorama gift card to burn. I was leaning toward the datacolor spyderlencal as of today. FoCal, lensalignment have benefits?

Thanks!
