Lenses / Fair price for 85mm F1.2 Mark I
« on: January 16, 2012, 03:22:57 PM »
All,

Gentleman had mark i version of the lens listed locally on craigslist. Been very interested in a UW and this lens for awhile now waiting for right deal to come along. Its listed for $1350 probably a decent price but whats a fair offer assuming excellent condition? I dont want to insult him with a low offer but Ive seen mark II's go for $1500 locally..

Thanks

I feel bad for my AU mates as most electronics are significantly more expensive then here in the US. When I was Melbourne I just had my 70-200 at the time and wanted to buy a longer tele for some dingo watching ;) but the prices were just too high for me to justify at the time...

You could literally fly roundtrip in international plus and stay almost stay a week for the 3K difference...

Very cool. I got LR3 at student price and it makes such a huge difference in workflow... Before I got it I figured it was a good editing software but didnt realize the power of handling RAW and exporting those files so quickly. I def will give LR4 a look..

Lenses / Wide Angle Lens - 16-28 F2.8 Tokina vs Canon 17-40 F4
« on: January 09, 2012, 04:07:10 PM »
G' Day All,

First time posting a new topic but wanted to get some advice if anyone wants to chime in. Ive been eyeing a couple WA's for months now. I had the 16-35 II in my shopping cart more then once now but decided against it as the extra cost savings in the following two lens will let me preorder the Mark III once available (Some budget concerns). Currently Im rocking my almost 4 year old XSi so I know the 10-22 would be better suited for it but like I said im making the full frame jump soon.

Im guessing a fair share of people on the forum have or have used the 17-40 but wondering if anyone has used the rather new Tokina and how they might compare. Prices are comparable new though the 17-40 has more of a used market currently. The Tokina doesnt accept filters which for me is a drawback but the extra stop makes it more appealing as I do anticipate the occasional handheld evening landscape shot.

Cheers

If you can hold off a couple weeks we might get lucky (though doubtful) and see the 200-400 f/4 which I think would a good lens for a Safari. My friend brought his 200-400 Nikon and said it was great for this trip to SA.

Downloaded the App the other day for my ipad. Information wise its nothing anyone on this board (Ap, Tv, ISO etc) would learn anything from but very cool app and best of its free..

Good view of all the lenses Canon makes currently

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: First Kodachrome, now Kodak?
« on: January 04, 2012, 09:15:27 AM »
As a Rochestarian, its sad to see Kodak fall as far as they have. Management made some poor decisions years ago and now are facing the wrath of the digital age. Buying anything Fuji in Rochester was like buying a Honda in Detroit growing up.. ::sigh::

Basically there valuable patents are keeping them afloat..

Agreed its twice as fast but the Samyang is still 2x price if pachacutek is looking for cost as the priority..

Canon General / Re: Canon 16-35 vs Tamron 17-50
« on: January 02, 2012, 11:09:41 AM »
I had the Tamron for awhile and liked the IQ for the price.

I returned it after I got back from Australia however because I was getting a lot of ER99 issues and hadnt had that with any of my canon lens and to this day was the only lens that ever gave me that issue.

The 16-35L is probably my next lens

+4 fow B+W.. not only is the glass and coatings better quality but even the threading onto the canon lens seem that much better..

That being said i have a Tiffen CP for my 24-105 and its very nice

Do yourself a big favor, the best $30 you will ever spend and pick up a copy of Syl Arena's Speedliter's Handbook: Learning to Craft Light with Canon Speedlites.  Not only is it geared for Canon's flash system but it addresses  your questions precisely:

- Controlling exposure for ambient and flash lighting separately
- balancing color temperature so your ambient and flash are naturally blended
- manual flash, when, why, and how
- every single function and setting explained for 580s, 550s, 430s, ST-E2, and even the 270
- gelling speedlights

I don't mean to keep plugging this book on CR (I think this is the 3rd time), but trust me, the book is really that good!   BTW it also comes in a Kindle version, but don't buy the Kindle instead of the printed copy--too many photos, charts and illustrations.  Buy it in addition if you need a portable copy.

Agree with this - very informative read.

+1. My favorite photography book of all time...

Lenses / Re: So what kinda gear did Santa bring you this year?
« on: December 27, 2011, 02:25:51 PM »
Santa (aka wife) upgraded my 50mm F1.8 to the 1.4 and also got the 85mm F1.8.. with a pair of B+W UVs for each.. Probably see if I can get a few bucks for the 1.8 on Craigslist now

Hoping my late January b-day will bring the 35mm F1.4 II if released

I picked up the SX230 recently as a Amazon Lighting Deal for $150 as a P&S.. Great little camera for price though had I waited a couple weeks the recent deals on the S95 and the ability to shoot RAW would have been nice..
