EOS Bodies / Re: Hugely Disappointed In 5D III Price
« on: March 15, 2012, 02:20:13 PM »
Nikon just reduced the price of the D800 in Canada.  Retailers originally had it listed at $3149 CAD, now it's only $2999 CAD.  Maybe Canon will follow suit?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 1D cameras for walk-around and traveling
« on: March 13, 2012, 08:40:34 PM »
I've travelled with my 1ds3. It's no fun when you have a big white lens on it. Big and heavy!!!  However, I've learned that coupling my 1ds3 with a lighter lens like a 16-35, 50 1.4, 24-70, or 24-105 makes it tolerable for travelling. I wouldn't say enjoyable, but I would say tolerable. I guess it depends on what type of traveller you are too. I walk a lot when on vacation, whether it be adventure treks or urban walks, and I definitely like a smaller, lighter setup. If you include a car on your vacations, then a 1d body setup is less bothersome. If you're a backpacker or like to travel light, you won't appreciate travelling with a 1d body. I whole heartedly recommend travelling with a 5d or a Rebel body instead. My last trip through SE Asia (adventure/backpacking), all i brought was an Olympus e-p3 and simply loved life. My current travel setup is a Rebel t3i, 15-85, and an S100 (for restaurants and going out at night). Sometimes I replace my s100 with an x100. To summarize, for me, it's about light weight and mobility... so I leave my 1ds3 at home when I'm visiting the rest of the world.

One last note... in one incident while shooting with my 1ds3, I've been asked to stop taking pictures while people around me were allowed to continue takings pics with their p/s.

In the mean time... people are unwrapping their D4's while we wait for our 1Dx to arrive.  Canon must be putting the finishing touches on the instruction manual.  *sigh*

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D III or 1DX

Does anyone have a good grasp on the difference between the HDR function of the 5D3 vs the Multiple Exposure feature of the 1Dx?  I don't fully understand the differences... aren't they the same thing?  I thought they were until Canon marketed them to be two different things.  HDR is a product of combining multiple exposures, that I know.  So what's the difference?  Does the 1Dx have HDR then?

Why won't Canon put on-board flash into their 5D series?  I can honestly say that I really appreciate having on-board flash with my 7D.  It's bothersome to have to carry a 580 flash if you just feel like travelling light.  It just seems like having putting a flash onto the 5D3 would make it a very versatile, "do-it-all" type camera.  Thx.

That little battery is the only reason why you don't lose all of your time/date/custom settings when you pull out your main battery (LP-e6 in your 5D2).  Given their purpose and function, they tend to last "forever" (you get what I mean here) and are usually pre-installed for you.  Out-of-sight-out-of-mind... I think that's what digital camera makers were thinking here.

Hahaha... why can't people just laugh and have fun with the OP?  Some people have lots of money, some have little, some are in between.  Who cares?!  Just laugh and roll with it... I'm sure that's what the OP meant to start.  If not, that's funny too!!

Awesome picture!!! Well said too... "grown ass man", damn straight... now go buy whatever the heck you want.  I'll probably buy 2 5D3s just because I can. 8)

@distant.star... relax man.  Geez, you know the internet is a world-wide thing right?  Not everyone is as fluent in English as you are.  Stop acting like the condescending know-it-all just because you have anonymity on the net.

YEAH!?  I've been checking all the sites daily looking for the S100.  It's getting very frustrating.  Seems like people in the US have been using the S100 for a few weeks now.  The Vistek site says that they don't expect to receive the S100 until Jan 20/12.  That would be terrible business if they can't get the S100 out before Xmas.

My kid brother works at Mcbain in Edmonton. The Canon Rep brought the 1dx by his store a few days ago. Says that Iso 51k is pretty impressive.  Again, no mem card, just inspection of the LCD. I have my 1dx locked down for March!!!  Can't wait to get it!

United States / Re: Canon 135L or the 100L Macro?
« on: October 21, 2011, 12:47:47 PM »
Just buy both!  I did.  There are lots of 135L on the used market (Kijiji etc...) that are in pristine condition.

For real though... the 100L takes really sweet portraits too!!!  It's something that people may not realize, given the Macro designation of the lens.  You just have to get closer than normal to your subject to narrow your depth of field.  This may make your human subject uncomfortable and act less natural.

With the 135L, you can maintain a comfortable distance and take great portrait shots because of the F2 aperture and telephoto compression.  However, no macro capabilities.

I guess it's give and take, huh?  Exactly the dilemma Canon wants us to be in?!

Lenses / Re: Canon 24/105mm f/4L IS USM vs Canon 24/70mm f/2.8L USM
« on: October 21, 2011, 11:10:02 AM »
I have both of these lenses.  Both are super amazing and tack sharp.  My F2.8 needed calibration from Canon Canada but returned to me tack sharp.  My F4 was incredibly sharp out of the box.

In short, for me:

F4 for travel and fun because it's relatively compact and light weight.  IS is amazing too.

F2.8 for serious event work where portraits are required in low light.

@awinphoto... I'm sure you've stumbled upon this website: www.the-digital-picture.com but I thought I would cover the bases anyhow.  It's a good resource for researching canon stuff.

I have a 7D and a 1Ds3... with my 7D, I can't take advantage of the wide angle range on my L lenses and getting true aperture/dof.  That's the only thing that bugs me.  However, I love how responsive and low-profile the 7D is compared to the 1Ds3.  Sorry, I know you asked about the 5D2 but I thought that I could add whatever I could anyways.  I really love my 7D's AF and AE systems.  I've been holding out for a 5D3 in hopes that Canon incorporates all the 7D details with the 5D3 full frame.  Good luck with your situation.
