EOS Bodies / Re: November 3, 2011 Announcement
« on: November 03, 2011, 08:27:14 AM »
Heh... if that 300C rumor holds up, then I hope they set their price right. Those speccs I already have covered in my Sony FS100, and it shoots better in the dark than the 5D II does.

Im not holding my breath so far...

Canon General / Re: Camera armor, does it work?

I can't remember the last time I dropped or bumped any camera... just be careful and mindful in your work. Find the cure instead of the medicine....

There has been a lens adapter with built-in aperture for quite a while now.  It does not control the lens aperture, but does allow you to control the light.

I owned that... used it once and sold it again. The light fall off and vignetting makes it completely useless in my opinion. Until the Birger mount comes around I'm happy to work around using the stop down button on my Canon and attaching the lens with the Fotodiox adapter.

Canon General / Re: Canon Calling

I think you owe us with such a specific situation to tell more about who you are and what you work with... ie. the reasons why a Canon rep would call you of all people up.

EOS Bodies / Re: No 5D Mark III on Novemeber 3 [CR2]

digital rev had the same feeling.

This is why the 5d MKIII is going to be something of an upgrade that we are going to have to just wait out, it has to fill some big shoes of it's predecessor and what we expect, kinda reminds me of how blizzard takes the longest time to make it's games Starcraft / Diablo.

The 5d MKII is a crazy great camera; think the biggest upgrade for me to have is (skipping MP's to be honest)

1.) EVF viewfinder
2.) Bigger flip any direction HD screen
- extra -
XLR input with phantom power & an audio-output to monitor audio while recording (built in)
3.) Slow-Mo Video setting + more Cinema style settings
4.) Canon Professional Video editing software be nice too bundled in.

Ironically... this is exactly what their competition has right now... and at the price range of 5500 dollars, which again is cheaper than the projected price of the 2 video cams.

A mk III better have ALL of the above and more.

How many of you have been like this since the start of the year:

"Should I buy mk II or wait for the mk III?"

Well... buy the god damn camera if you need it :)

And with a price tag of 10000 dollars or more for that video cam, it better be shooting native 4:2:2 with 4:4:4 through hdmi and an amazing noise handling, otherwise I sense that Sony will be rubbing their hands :)

Did I mention how great a video cam the FS100 is... well, it is really great, and with an adapter it too will work with EF lenses.

Have fun waiting.

Canon General / Re: Best lens for video
« on: September 22, 2011, 03:18:15 PM »
What are you filming? Really depends on that as well... Stablization will help a great deal, but I would never exchange those two lenses you have with a 24-105.

Look up shoulder mount options if you're doing run and gun videoing, and tripod if you're doing landscape / scenery shots. The only time I would even consider changing to an IS lens like the 24-105, is if I was doing handheld, and then my question would be why you didn't just get a consumer camcorder instead.

Sound... it's bad, but I don't take it you're doing paid jobs, so get a Rode Videomic Pro, great mic for the money. Just don't get the stereo unless you want to record everything incl. your own breathing. Stereo mics NEVER go on camera....

Canon General / Re: 7d or Mark II for filming?
« on: September 19, 2011, 04:59:44 AM »
If you can afford it, go prosumer cam corder instead... the MKII and 7D are old tech by now, and their shortcomings are getting noticed. Thus is the game of the late arriver a hard one.

Rolling shutter, jello'ing and the lack of proper sound, makes for nothing more than a hobby camera, and as soon as clients learn that it was fun for a while with all that shallow depth of field crap, what they loose in return when buying projects from dslr videographers outweighs the fun side of it.

If you wanna stick with Canon... wait around for the october announcement and see if it at all competes with what Sony and Pana has put out. Canon still rules the still world imo, but in the video world they are falling behind again.

Did I mention the crappy sound??? Sound is atleast 50% of any video / film project.

Canon General / Re: A Canon Hollywood Event on November 3, 2011
« on: September 16, 2011, 02:20:25 AM »
Whatever it is, I probably can't afford it.  If it is a FF cinema camera, I doubt that it would use EF lenses.

Cinema quality lenses are a whole different product than EF lenses, with a price to match. Thats why they are usually rented.

My thoughts as well... the cinema world is an ambitious step, and I might say that it's even too ambitious for Canon the Consumer Company.

Even though the EF L series lenses can look nice on video, the step up is definitely visible on the pro cinema lenses ranging from 5k dollars and up a piece. If I indeed did invest in something in the range of RED or Alexa, I would never humble myself to use anything less than Zeiss CP, and most likely I would try to find the finances to step it up one or two notches.

On the other hand... maybe Canon is just blowing out steam to avoid people running away from their aging Eos series to one of the competitors... like Sony or Pana :) It would buy them some time to get closer to the Ds and mk III release and have people "uuuuuuhhh" and "ahhhhh". Never underestimate fanbois.

Without XLR and ability to record externally through HDMI it will remain an ambitious camcorder...

Nevertheless, it's interesting to see if the rumor holds up, 4:2:2 is a welcome improvement. Wont make me replace my Mk II for still photography though...

Canon General / Re: 60D + Atomos Ninja!
« on: September 12, 2011, 08:29:27 AM »
Agreed... you can't route anything from that mini hdmi slot other than for viewing on a monitor.

Besides, putting an external recorder on a dslr is like buying a gold gear stick for a Trabant... go buy a proper video camera for that, or... the other way around, buy the Ninja or something better for a proper video camera.

I know I've said this before, but I really dislike - resent, even - the idea that a significant part of the cost of the 5D3 that I'll buy will have gone into developing video functionality that I will never, EVER, use.

Just sell me a 5D3 without any video functionality, commensurately cheaper, please!

Or, spend the same money enhancing the stills functionality.

If I wanted a camcorder, guess what: I'd go out to a camcorder shop, and buy one.

Sorry to repeat the same old rant.

Quoted for truth... That's the reason I parked the video function of the 5D and went out and got a Sony for those kind of jobs. The zone of 5D filming has reached its peak and I actually don't  see the charm of it anymore. It's more of a poor-man-would-be-film-maker's excuse to call himself a videographer or filmmaker.

Sure why not :) My son came to this world  months ago, and I hadn't done a proper cliche photo of him yet, so a couple of weeks ago I set up a single lamp with a softbox and try to get something within the 5 min attention span of him :P

I think it came out decently even though I dislike classic portraiture.

Way to go Sony :) Since I bought the FS100, I'm looking more and more at these guys. They have the potential to reclaim what they started in the dawn of time.

Will be interesting to see Canons response to this.

60p... and 12fps woot :P

I own the mk II and now also a Sony FS100, and to be honest the Sony beats the mk II by a mile. Recording external is the optimal, but not necessary with a camera like the Sony that has two XLRs and proper preamps... the sound actually sounds good, and you can mix it on the go.

The old advice still goes, if you need now buy, if you don't rent when needed.

If I was excited when I got the 5D and made 3 music videos with it, I can't describe how excited I was after having shot the first video with the FS100 (not online yet).

The form factor of the FS100 is inline with the DSLRs and slightly resembles a Hasselblad box. It's modular and not very heavy.
The cheap EF > Nex adapters around made it easy for me to use my canon lenses on the Sony, and I'm looking forward to using my 70-200 for sit down interviews the next month.

You say you travel a lot? I bought the Pelicase 1510. It's specced for cabin sized luggage and the Sony fits right in there including its accessories, and then some.
You can't fit in the still camera as well, but what the heck.

Just saying... take a look at the Vimeo group for FS100. A lot of nice things coming out of this cam.

And again... this is coming from a 5D fan / user (or former... ;) )
