PowerShot Cameras / Which Powershot or IXUS
« on: December 24, 2012, 07:17:45 PM »
I want a pocket camera but with some control.  My heart was set on an EOS M, but I've a C100 to buy, so keeping cash for that instead.

Still got space in my life for a carry about camera, and space in my pocket and wallet.

Don't want an S or a G, as I would rather just go that bit further and get the M, however the IXUS 310hs and Powershot sx220 hs are coming up as good value, decent specc'd capable enough pocket cameras with a bit of control.

Also strike me as exceptional value for money, which might even get better in the sales in a couple of days.

Anybody used either model (note the IXUS 310hs is the eu name) or the 230 (220 with GPS - don't need)

This is really just a camera to have with me, in the pocket, in the glove box, but with enough of a manual input to keep me happy.  Not breaking the bank, not expecting miracles.

Happy Christmas if thats your thing, Happy New Year if thats your calender, and all the best anyway if not.

EOS Bodies / Digital equivalence: film tab holders
« on: December 22, 2012, 11:20:50 PM »
In the film years, when camera bodies were changed with far less frequency, i used to love the holder for your tab off the film box, just to remind you of your speed and colour etc.

The film was kind of the subconscious signal of intent.   A zenit loaded with k64 meant more than an fm loaded with gold...

If ever I saw a velvia, delta or tmax label I would be quite interested in what they were up to.  Regardless of the camera body spec or cost.

I wonder what the digital equivalence is?  ...

Good shots aside?  What marks out an impoverished artisan from a souless gearhead?

An eyecup? A spirit level?  A handmade camera strap? An adapted manual lens?

Thoughts please.  Aside from white lenses what else makes you think.. "they are obviously quite into it" when you meet a fellow tog on your travels?

EOS-M / To buy M or not to buy M?
« on: December 14, 2012, 02:19:28 PM »
Handled one with the 18-55, yet to handle one with the 22mm on it (which is the kit I would go for)

Like it.  A lot.  A great compliment to my exsisting EOS gear.  If I get it.

However I do use some third party lenses, specifcially concerned about the Tokina 11-16, Sigma 30mm f1.4 and 70mm f2.8.  Lensbaby composer too.

Has anybody used any of these lenses via the EF adaptor?

Lenses / Cheapish standard / short tele replacement / upgrade
« on: October 18, 2012, 11:25:05 AM »
Hi folks,

Nifty fifty was playing up last night, return of the old err01 fault.

So thinking of taking the opportunity to replace.

Something along similar lines...

standard / short tele perspective (I'm on APS-C)

Likely options...  Canon 50mm f1.4,  Sigma 50mm f1.4, Canon 35mm f2.0, Sigma 30mm f1.4, Samyang 35mm f1.4, not got zeiss money just now, don't mind manual lenses.  Think the shorty forty might be at least a stop too dark (and want to avoid duplication, already have an f2.8 zoom that covers 40)

Thoughts.

I don't want to hear about how great the 50mm f1.2 or 35mm f1.4 are.  I'm not going to buy them, so save your typing.

Thanks

EOS Bodies / EOS Remote App.. for other cameras?
« on: September 20, 2012, 05:06:58 AM »
Looks like a great idea!  I'm already using the Capture One remote capture (which requires a wifi laptop tethered to the camera) so the Canon implementation looks miles better.

I note in the screen grabs that the 7D is mentioned, is this a function that can work with the WFT grip?  What about a T3i with Eye-Fi card?

Been looking for a less clumsy way of doing things and this app looks great!  Not going to buy a 6D though.

Life after flickr?

Recently flickr seems to be really stale, a lot of my groups are very very quiet and a lot of once familiar users haven't uploaded in months.

Has anybody else noticed that?  Where have they all went?  I liked the groups feature and tagging etc in flickr, but didn't like the clumsy interaction.   The group here is much more vibrant, knowlegable yet discussions more viceral, opinionated, less 'chummy' (a good thing in a way, everything on flickr was 'great' 'super' etc

Thoughts?  My pro membership lapses soon and I'm really not of a mind to renew.

Lenses / ephotozine review of 40mm f2.8 STM

They are still asking 'but what is it for?' but whatever it is, it appears to do it rather well...

Lenses / 40mm f2.8 $199 in US, $355 in UK, why?
« on: June 09, 2012, 09:46:40 PM »
If the lens had been under £200 it was a no brainer.  At £230, I'm probably not going to bother.  MTF's look good, lens form looks good, just the price discrepancy is just obscene.

EOS Bodies - For Video / Best cheap monitor.
« on: May 26, 2012, 12:42:53 PM »
I am looking at Lilliput 668 or 5D2 models.

That is I'm afraid the limit of my budget £180ish.

At this price, is there anything better, or am I better not bothering altogether?

I would welcome replies from people who have actually owned, own or have used monitors at this end of the market, based on their own experience.

Many thanks in advance for your thoughts.
