Lenses / Re: Would you rather buy used or refurbished?
« on: May 08, 2013, 03:24:32 PM »
I buy both, used with care, refurbed with a smile on my face.

You always need to ask with used... why are they selling it?  Obvious damage?  Not obvious damage..
Get a warranty with used.  Check it the day you get it, complain immediately if something isn't right.

Refurbs usually have a years warranty, and whatever problem they've had has been fixed.  It's probably better set up now than when it first left the factory as it's been through QC twice, once when they were paying particular attention.

No qualms at all about buying refurb.

I think dilbert is close to saying the right thing, but saying it in the wrong way.

These are technically accomplished, but creatively sparse, you've nailed the magic hour technique, but with such an iconic landmark you really need a new angle to stand out.  We've seen these before & we'll see them again.

I live on the west coast of Scotland and I am spoiled by some of the most beautiful coastal and mountain scenery in the world, and most of it fairly accessable.  Which means that you'll have seen most of the landmarks, in HDR with ND110's at dusk, at dawn, with snow, etc time and time again.

There's nothing worse than seeing 1000x Colin Prior or Joe Cornish clones.  Colin & Joe are masters.  I'm not at their level, and neither are the dullards in scottish camera clubs who would be as well as working a photocopier than working a camera.  I'll never attempt Black Rock for this reason.  Folk have done it before, folk have done it better, folk more creative than me, or more willing to get the ropes out will get better angles than me.

Please don't be disheartened.  They are nice images, striking colours, decent composition, capbale depth of field control, they display the ingredients you'll need to create striking brilliant images that folk will want to come back to again and again, just I don't think you've done that here.

You could submit these to a library and they would probably sell pretty well, if thats any consolation.

I sincerely look forward to seeing what else you come up with in the future, I and hope you take my comments in the spirit intended.

To those dilbert bashing, the place for sychophancy is flickr

Cheers Neuro

Wrong continent, I should have specified, ideally uk store recommends (tried the usual suspects) or brand recommends, already have B+W 110 in a 77mm, don't quite want something so strong, a 16, or even a 32 would be beneficial.

EOS-M / Filters for M

Hi folks,

loving my M so far, polariser is on order, but I would also like some ND's, perhaps an ND16, but I'm struggling to find anything in 43mm (other than unbranded cheapies on an auction site) any suggestions?

also, has anybody used a faderND on their M?  Again, looking perhaps for a 43mm.  LCW do a 46, and there is a lot of crap out there, what are you using and are you happy?

Cheers

I'm using an old bag I had in my gear ciupboard, it's a jack wolfskin tassili M, has two compartments, main fits the M+22 front fits the EF-M adaptor with mesh side compartments that fit my battery and filter.

Don't know if these can still be had new, but it's a nice wee size and feels quite rugged, work seeking out.

EOS-M / Re: My Eos M review - Part Two

nice review and nice images.

Mine arrived yesterday, going to use it in anger today at lunch.  Very impressed with form so far, images look good on LCD, will see how they fare on VDU.

I've found the AF on the 22 as expected, not the fastest ever, but in one shot single zone af (with touch on and off) to be pretty fast.  I guess for street stuff I would probably use AF-MF with continuous AF off (so it behaves like a one shot lock idea) pre-compose shot, lock focus and wait for decisive moment.

I really am very impressed.  My 430EX is working ok on  it, as are my thrid party lenses, my 100mm 2.0 USM is very fast to focus on it, my sigma macro very slow, but very accurate.

It can work.

The ARDrone can be modified to take a Go-Pro, if you add the wi-fi back then you can see what the go-pro see's on your iphone.

You need an ARDrone and a kit from this guy:

http://etfett.net/product_info.php?products_id=55

All pretty modest cost, but pretty modest results (Ar Drone isn't that stable in higher winds, RC range isn't great)

You can spend thousands on a proper RC helicoptor with gyro mount and full RC for helicopter and camera settings.

Safety, licensing, insurance are all issues depending on your region.

It can work.  But there are degrees of how well.  I wouldn't want to fly it over people lest it drop from the sky and nasty lawyers come and take all my cameras and my car away and my girlfriend leaves me and I end up on the streets.

EOS Bodies / Re: No 7D Mark II in 2013? [CR2]
« on: May 07, 2013, 07:14:45 AM »
the 7D's great.  the 7d2 will no doubt be better.  I could be better too.  And so could lots of the photographs I see from 1DX's.  And I'm pretty sure it's not camera error.

*replace 7D with 7D2 next year, and 7D2 with with 7D3 in 2016.  If you are reading this in 2019 then for 1DX read 1DXI.

Ibid & ad infinitum.

It's the price of an M!

If you had an NEX already... well can see the point up to a point.

If you didn't, you'd just buy an M, wouldn't you?

Thanks for the metabones link.

I had forgotton all about it, despite posting a link on this forum when it was announced.  Silly me, I must have written it off in my mind.

It's a shame there isn't an ef option, with controls via a ribbon.

What do you want? A serious ts or a fun ts?  There are fd- f convertirs, usually with coke bottle optics though, eouldn't be do bad for fake minature...

Any of your friends got a rolling trainer?  Set that up against black.

Big soft light above pointing down.  White board on ground reflecting up .

Gopro on bike?

If outside shoot 2-3 hour after dawn, 2-3 hrs before dusk.  Wb for shade, shootinto the sun.

Cvp sm-1 (or clone)  is ideal cheap shoulder mount.  Keep the lenses wide.

If anything a 30s narrative is harder to coherently fill than a short which is harder to fill coherantly than a programme or feature.

Write your treatment / script.  Make friends with a sub editor.  Cut to the bone.
Shoot lots.

Get a cheapish macro lens for bike bit cluse ups.

For me a csc only has the csc main selling point with a pancake lens.

99% of the time my M will have the 22mm fitted and will fit in my pocket in a way that a DSLR wouldn't.

It'll be miles better IQ than the SX230 that lives in my glovebox.

And if I'm going to bastardize the CSC concept by putting anything other than a pancake on it, then it might as well be a lens that I already own, and I can't do that with a panasonic, fuji or sony.

For me, and I'm feeling increasingly isolated, the M makes quite a lot of sense used in the way it was designed to be used, which was never as an SLR beater, in the same way that none of the other CSCs are SLR beaters.

Cant mount huh?

I'm sorry your EOS M is on the 4th page of this list, but there ARE mirrorless cameras out there that beat most dslrs

http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Cameras/Camera-Sensor-Ratings/List-view

Mount with AF?  Mount with aperture control? Sorry when I said 'mount' I meant mount and work, othereise, where's the gaffer tape?

I'm just sorry you read through 4 pages of dxo to make your point.

When hou buy your next car, ask the garage to remove the gear box before you take it out.  Buy the car based purely on the torque charts.   Doesn't work, does it?

Funny how all the canon-biased reviewers who slate the af also praise the iq of the m.
