Canon General / Re: Don't order camera gear from Dell.com online store
« on: January 17, 2013, 11:42:01 PM »
I once received a Ham Radio Transceiver Kit by USPS Priority Mail, and it was an empty box, still sealed.  The vendor was suspicious of me, but finally sent me a replacement kit.  I guess crooks know how to empty a Priority Mail box. The postage on the box indicated it had something in it when mailed, but it was completely empty.

Why would anyone order a Canon Camera from DELL anyway..
B&H gets all my business since Amazon started collecting Sales tax for the State of Kalifornia.

I watch this site looking camera prices, waiting to buy a 5Diii.  But I would only buy from BH or Adorama. Amazon would be fine except that they are now collecting CA sales tax, whereas BH is not. So that makes it foolish to buy from Amazon, as much as I love to give all my money to tax agencies.

Technical Support / Re: 5dMARK III showing ERR 40 then ERR 20

If your camera is under warranty, and there is some malfunction, of course Canon will repair it. I believe you only have to pay the shipping one way to the repair facility.  However, if you are using a third party lens, and the problem MAY be the lens, then all bets are off. That's why I only buy Canon lenses.  If you have problems when using more than one lens, and they are Canons, I would simply send the camera in, and wait ten days for them to fix it all up. If your camera is not under warranty, they will give you an estimate, and, of course, you will accept it, because you want your camera to work. Then, you will forget you ever paid for the repair, enjoy your like-new camera, and move on.

Lenses / Re: Canon 100mm macro IS vs non-IS - any further input?
« on: January 06, 2013, 04:27:17 AM »
I have them both, and you will like either one, if you consider your needs. The IS lens often finds itself on my camera as a general purpose lens, while the older one always seemed to be dedicated for macro shots, although both do very nice portrait work on a full frame camera.

Technical Support / Re: CANON 5D MK II problem

When you get it back it will once again be a totally reliable camera, and you will be glad you sent it in.

I had an old 3mp Digital Elph go bad, out of warranty. The sensor had some kind of problem with it's attachment or something. Canon could not repair it because it was about three years old, but because it was a manufacturing defect, they sent me a refurb 10mp SD770 IS to replace it. That little camera is great.

I can figure that made up for the following out-of-warranty repair of my 20D which cost me a couple of hundred dollars for only a cracked top LCD Screen cover. (Banged it against the gearshift in my truck).  It came back all checked out, cleaned, and good as new.

So send it for service and enjoy it when it comes back in good, reliable shape.

I think the well used Leica is wonderful. I wish I could expect to keep a camera long enough to achieve that.

I see some artifacts along the edge of the right arm. This is not a focus issue.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Anyone still using a 20D?
« on: January 03, 2013, 11:10:14 PM »
Thanks folks. That site mentioned by "M" convinced me that there is plenty of life left in my camera, and I will have to get busy using my 100mm macro.... Look forward to a 5D MkIII when it gets a bit closer to 2000, maybe.  It just seems discussions tend to be about the newest cameras, but obviously, there are plenty of other ones in use...

Enjoying this site. Thanks to the folks who provide it....

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Anyone still using a 20D?
« on: January 03, 2013, 08:19:55 PM »
I have a 20D, and am waiting to buy a 5DMkIII this year if I can save up a bit.  Should I simply assume the 20D is obsolete? I still really like it, and 8mp seems nice enough for some things that won't be blown up over 5x7 or so. Is anyone still shooting with this older camera, or is the tendency to simply let it go? It's such a dear friend....

Does Canon charge California sales tax? B&H is getting all my business since Amazon buckled on tax.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon Cannot Keep Screwing It's Customers Over
« on: January 02, 2013, 10:32:41 PM »
Well, I bought a few L series lenses a few years ago, and most of them have increased in value. It's the bodies that diminish in price. Naturally so, since the sensors keep getting better.  That's one of the regrets I have regarding digital photography. Back when I bought my first Nikon F, I felt it would always be there for me. It was. Right up to the point when I bought the Canon 20D.  I would never buy a Leica M9, since it will be worth quite a bit less in five years in my opinion.
It's the nature of the technology. I wish I only had to buy new film to get the benefit of the latest technology. And my Nikon F made ME focus the lens.
