Lenses / Re: I have just lost confidence with Canon Rumors & B&H
« on: April 17, 2013, 07:47:14 AM »
Seems like there are a ton of apologists on here.

It doesn't seem to be a popular move to mention in the forums that rebate prices are horsesh*t (but it's the truth, isnt it?).

I track camera prices daily, as im sure some other folks do. Its always the same "deal" with canon rebates  ;D- prices go through the roof :o, add a rebate to it  ???, and you are generally still paying more than you would have the week before.  :-[ Many other stores do it with various goods, but how does that make this 'acceptable'? Some of you posters are better off just saying"deal with it", as that's where your rationale is going anyways.

Im a bit off put when i see deals headlines, then look at the prices and wince. Im not going to have a cow about it, but call a spade a spade. These deals are not deals by any stretch of the imagination.

I could care less about canon's MAP, that shouldn't be legal. It is deceptive, as most customers are not privy to the shenanigans and deals between manufacturers and retail. So that argument falls on its face. Sure, we can all be from the informed consumers set, but that still doesn't make it fair nor reasonable to the CONSUMER. And as a consumer, who the f cares how the prices got lower- we should always be looking for that lower price.

So, um, yeah, these rebates...um, yeah...great.... ;) ::)

PS- I like this site too  :D

The 6D is their flagship connectivity (Wifi/ GPS) camera

LOL what does this mean

the 6D can also be:

  • flagship single cross point camera
  • flagship cut feature camera
  • flagship landscape only camera
  • flagship tight as hell AF point spread, useless for portraits camera :(

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 6D as a Compliment to 5DMkiii
« on: March 31, 2013, 08:58:04 AM »
I almost never use the center focus point, and aside from the additional 50 AF points that the 5D3 offers over the 6D, what makes those points so useful is how much of the frame they cover (53% horizontally).

Another great perk of the 5D3/1Dx AF system is how many of its 61 AF points function as cross-type sensors, even with slow glass.

I can appreciate when a shooter mentions they rarely use the center focus point. Within all of the photo forums that i peruse, all i hear is people crowing about how "they dont need" more than one focus point or "focus and recompose" is the best way to go, etc. Im still on the 7d/rebel level of bodies due to budget, and was appalled and eventually killed my 6d purchase mainly due the weak AF canon put in there.

I pretty much never use the central focus point, for my portrait, street style and even landscape work.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 7D vs 5D3 noise @ ISO400
« on: March 31, 2013, 08:39:09 AM »
This is one of the craziest comparisons ever. 7d is certainly no noise champion.

Lord help you if you receive a 7d with wacky AF...once my AF went, the camera was completely unusable fort the last year i had it. The most frustratingly under performing camera i have ever come across.

Reviews / Re: Review - Canon EF 85 f/1.2L II
« on: March 05, 2013, 03:00:03 PM »
I personally dont need a comparison to the 85 1.8

i find that that lens just doesn't do it for me..the images are very flat of color, and the fringing is just awful. The AF is utterly spectacular however. Ive been debating selling mine, and i think i will. Especially after i got the 70-200II, i think ive used it only once...and that was over a year ago.

Maybe ill wait until i go full frame to rejudge it

For the love that is holy, I hope we can read the camera spec and not have too many WTF? moments. Im dying for a new body. My backup t2i (love it!) af went wacky just in time for fashion week. I think i have had AF issues with every canon ive ever owned...wtf  :(

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Canon EOS 7D or Nikon D7100
« on: February 22, 2013, 12:27:10 PM »
The IQ of the 7100 is pretty much sure to trounce the 7d- it is its only failing (other than the Af going bonkers sometimes)

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Nikon 7100 has been anounced
« on: February 21, 2013, 02:58:46 PM »
Canon is having their asses handed to them.

By spec alone, this cam outshines canons entire set of middle ground/enthusiast/semi pro cameras- including the weak spec'ed 6D, and quite easily at that. And the body for only 1200? Thats less than an almost 4 year old 7d. the 60d is 'history'. Canon actually markets the 6d as an entry level landscape camera...for 2k. One cross point. >:( :( :o Even the 650d has 9 cross points. Wither, canon.
The D7100 specs look great.  However, despite their specs, Nikon also dominates in consumer dis-satisfaction.  Check Amazon.com for all of the 1-star [worst] ratings that Nikon is getting from buyers of the D600 and D800.  So far, about 17% of reviewers are giving them just 1 star for these cameras.  By comparison, so far just 2% of reviewers are giving the 5DIII 1 star, and 0% of reviewers are giving the 6D 1 star.  With all of the value Nikon is providing in their specs they should be leading in consumer satisfaction, but clearly they aren't.  In fact, for those specific models, it's not even close.

I dont disagree here. One of the reasons i went with canon in the first place was for the customer service. i will not buy a multithousand dollar product from a company without a good CS system behind them. I will also not buy a dumbed down product that i feel like im being shafted. The 6d is that, imho.

But it will be VERY interesting to see what canon does here- both the 7d2 and the 70d will have to differentiate from each other- how will they do it? the 70d is likely to get the gps/wifi, probably the same 9/11 point all cross Af.  while the 7d2 will get the dual card slots. Also, both of them have to live between the 1200-200 dollar range. Canon is pretty screwed here- maybe.

I wouldn't be surprised if canon set the 7d2 at 2099, and differentiate it with speed over the slow lethargic full frame 6d. It makes sense to me. I kind of sort it out like this:

7d2= more features, speed, dual slots, built well the machine gun
6d= less features, less af, better images, +wifi/gps the slow and steady tool
70d= super powered rebel, decent build, baby 7d  modern with a bit extra potential
t5i= (what else is left to do with this camera? its basically got everything) resetting the 'standard' expectation

thats my take. Im loving this conversation..competition is good,  and it sucks to see Nikon with the canon that i want.

At this point, for either manufacturer to EVER create a cam with one/minimal cross points is inexcusable.

The Af modules in recent nikons make Canon look lazy, stupid, foolish, conniving, and whatever other term you can throw at them- its just embarrassing. The m/43 mode just sounds awesome, especially with the extra Af coverage of the frame. Freaking, wow man.

After selling my 7d, i still have no mid level body to shoot with, and cant quite afford a 5d3.

Basically, I  am sooooooo thinking about getting this.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Kenrockwell comments on Canon 6d
« on: February 19, 2013, 01:11:44 PM »
This post is more about the 6D- sorry ken :P

Im still reading every bit of info about this camera. Ive been on the fence since it was first announced, But have now finally decided against buying- i would feel like im just getting ripped off from very basic features.

If i can get 9pt all cross on a 65od, why does a camera costing over 2x as much come tiwh one cross point? Honestly the AF was the biggest deciding factor fo4 me. I also feel that when the 70d comes out with all cross AF points, the camera is going look exceedingly embarrassed in comparison.

Im not mad at an SD slot- i have way more of them than i do CF cards- but the one slot argument does have some merit. Taking away the joystick doesn't make anything easier as well.

so ill now try to find some freelance work to help pay for a mark III.

EOS-M / Re: EOS M Autofocus Performance Won't Improve via Firmware [CR2]
« on: February 19, 2013, 01:04:10 PM »
Then this turkey of a camera is as dead as it is now.

Horrible, HORRIBLE AF performance. >:( >:( >:(  I couldn't believe how long it took to focus, its just unthinkable that canon would allow this.

Then again canon is all about protecting camera classes and margins nowadays.  Could have been a great travel and street cam, but with that dreadful af its limited to shooting statues and mountains. what a waste.  :'( :'( :'(

Canon General / Re: What's your definition of "Pro"?
« on: February 11, 2013, 12:58:28 PM »
Pro for me is somebody who is standing out of the photography crowd. Just earning money with photography doesnt mean they are pro photographers but rather..."pro workers"  imho. Like not every chef is a pro i think. They can all cook the same perhaps, but the star chef somehow makes it taste more awesome.

Being a pro is not about what one 'thinks'- because everyone has an opinion, it would be pretty worthless anyways.

Dont confuse pro with skill level

Pro is when people pay you for your services. Period.

You don't have to think the person is good, or even very talented, but they satisfy a business need and are compensated.

The End.

Canon General / Re: Why did you choose Canon?
« on: January 30, 2013, 01:41:07 PM »
I chose canon because they are designed by someone with common sense.

We are all visual people, some moreso than others. Personally i find nikons style clashes with my own- especially their UGLY  interfaces on the lower end bodies. The nikon menu system looks like something out of the stone age, and i ddi not want to deal with the AF/no Af motor nonsense.

More importantly, comes down to the glass- and some canon L glass is just too delicious not to own.
