Lenses / Re: Help! 70/200mm f/4 IS OR 70/200mm f/2.8 IS II

These are two different lenses with the same focal range really. For indoor work that you are getting paid for, the 2.8 is the way to go. That being said, it weighs twice as much and costs twice as much. I have rented the 2.8 II and own a f4. Both are very sharp and very useful lenses on both full frame and crop. On full frame it's a better everyday lens. The f4 is lighter, smaller, more compact. The f2.8 is more of a profesional piece of kit but it comes at a price in dollars and weight. But if you need 2.8..........

It's starting to amaze me seeing people on vacations and places they may never get to again, taking all thier shots with cellphone cameras. I went on a whale watching boat tour this year, my second one actually because the first provided no sightings. I'm local and can go on one of these tours anytime. Of course I still have to drive a half hour, buy a ticket, take the time etc. There are only so many places in the world where you can see humpback whales up close like this. The boat was clearly full of tourists who have come from around the world to see this amazing spectacle. In addition to the whales there are dolphins, puffins, other sea birds, amazing shorelines etc. So, what are most people using to record these often once in a lifetime trips? Smartphone cameras! You travelled all the way to Newfoundland, Canada, were lucky enough to get some whale sightings and this is how you are recording your memories! A trip like that, with what it costs deserves something better than a smartphone camera IMO.

Lenses / Re: 300mm F4L IS

I recently picked one of these up and so far so good. The minimum focal distance of 1.5 meters is a plus, and I like the retracable hood. As for comparisons to the newer 70-300L, I can't say as I have never used one. No doubt it's nice, but it is more expensive. You don't see many used ones and when you do they won't be in the sub $1000 range, which can happen with the 300L. Constant apperture is nice too and it works well with the 1.4 TC's from reports I've read. That gives you the option to go to 420mm at 5.6. I don't believe the 70-300L takes a TC.

Lenses / Re: Canon EF 100-400 f/4-5.6L IS "Soonish" [CR2]

What is this about AF not working with teleconverters? I am planning to pick up the Canon 1.4 TC III soon to use with my 70-200 f4 IS and 300L f4 IS. Will AF work? I have a 5DII and a 7D.

Yes, should work fine with both lenses and bodies. However a x2 tc that reports to the camera would not retain af on those bodies (1 series prior to the 1dx would retain af at f8 on the center point).

A 1.4tc makes the f4 lenses f5.6 lenses. You may lose cross sensors which would work as horizontal only (can't remember specifically for those bodies) but you would retain af, albeit at reduced speed.

The 100-400 v1 is f5.6 at the long end which means other than a 1.4tc on a 1 series body it will not autofocus with a 1.4 or 2.0 tc. There is a further expection, taping some pins or using a non reporting tc should retain af although the reliability likely won't be ideal. Long story short, you should be fine!

Thanks for the advice. I had heard that the 300 f4 IS worked well with the 1.4 TC and the 70-200 would take it also.

When I bought my kit from adorama, it was a 5d2 24-105, battery grip, spare battery, case, 8GB UMDA Sandisk CF, remote release, and software bundle for $2990.  When you take out the goodies It would put the 5d2 kit near 2750 give or take (after I bought that it jumped up $300 the next day and $100 more once the rebates ended)... Must have been a typo on the price?  But they honored the price.

That's a great deal if it was a Canon grip. All those items add up.

I picked my 5D II kit up a few months ago for $2750 at a local shop. These are the cheapest prices I've seen.

Yesterday I picked up a new 5D II kit with the 24-105 lens for $2749.00 Canadian at a local reputable shop. I was holding out for a 5D III but at this price I couldn't resist! Used bodies are being offered at $2200.00 still.

Just found a dealer in Toronto selling a 5D II with the 24-105 kit for $2799.00! That's a great deal considering that lens alone sells for around $1400 new.

Aden Camera here in Canada has the 5DII listed at $2200 and a bit for the body and $2900 and a bit for the 24-105 kit. That's as cheap as I have seen them. This is what people have been asking for these used. I suspect used prices will drop if this keeps up.
