There are times when I would like to take a bird's eye view of something. Perhaps it is a building by a beach, or a gathering/event out in the open.

Of course scaffolding is one answer, but I was looking at remote controlled helicopters the other day and started wondering just how good they are at getting such video. I could attach a GoPro at the angle I desire and if I can learn to fly the thing, I should be able to get a few seconds of decent shots. At least that is the idea.

Has anyone tried this? Am I being delusional, or can it work?

There must be millions around the globe that have DPP installed on their computers. Why do you think it is that Canon has not inserted an auto update facility in it? Same goes for EOS Utility etc.

I only found out by chance that they recently updated DPP to 3.13.0.1

How hard can it be to have a Check for Updates option under Help or in the About section?

Canon General / Camera Phone

Just curious, but if Canon, or any of the other camera manufacturers came out with a good quality compact camera such as the RX1 or RX100, that could also make and receive calls, even use apps like whatsapp etc. Would you buy it?

What I mean is, a high quality compact camera designed primarily for photography but which also has the ability to make calls, whatsapp etc., rather than a phone that can do a little of everything, but which is primarily a phone.

What are your thoughts?

Does anyone here use the Lowepro ProRoller X300? If so, what are your thoughts?

My trusted Targus roller broke on my last trip, and as it has already had new wheels, and the handle mechanism has broken twice over the years it is time for a new one.

The Lowepro ProRoller X300 caught my eye. It basically needs to carry all my camera gear, 17 inch laptop, and all the chargers, adapters that we all need to carry these days. It gets used a lot and so needs to be able to handle loads of abuse.

Site Information / 403 Cannot Reply

I keep getting a 403 (Forbidden) message when I try replying to one of my threads. This thread:

Not sure what is wrong. I have not changed anything at my end, and I am surprised that I can post here. But hopefully the admin will be able to take a look and fix whatever is broken.

Software & Accessories / Lowepro Toploader 80/85 Pro AW

I know there are a few people here that like the Lowepro Toploader series. I have the Pro 75 AW and the 55 AW. I like them, and use them all the time, but they are far from perfect.

I just wish they would make one slightly larger, an 80 or an 85. Would you?

What are your thoughts on this? This seems a nice step up from the XA10 and has some very useful features including XLR.

What would you like to see added to Canon's next firmware update for the 1D X?

I would like more than 6 choices in the My Menu. Even just 2 extra would be nice as I do find the My menu quite useful.

So what is this new Digic all about? Why did Canon opt to put it in the SX280 HS and SX270 HS but not the 100D and 700D?

Do we have any solid info yet on how it compares to the Digic 5+?

Software & Accessories / Tripod/Monopod - What a clever idea!

Was in a camera shop earlier, and came across this very clever tripod that not only weighs just 1.6kgs, has a maximum height of around 165 cm (without head), folds down to just 41 cms, and has a maximum load of 15 kgs, but you can also unscrew one of the legs to get a monopod! How clever!

I have never seen that before, and for those that travel (especially by air) and often need both a tripod and monopod at different times on a trip, then this is truly amazing!

EOS Bodies - For Stills / CF Cards - Where do you buy yours?

Now I have gone and bought the 1D X, I thought it would be wise to upgrade my CF cards and am now shopping around comparing prices.

According to my calculations, it seems the US is the cheapest place to buy them. The Lexar Pro 1000X for example costs US$ 133 / £ 135 for the 32 GB (US/UK respectively) US$ 289 / £ 280 for the 64GB.

That is quite a difference, and here in Asia CF cards are a lot more expensive than the UK price even.

In the past I have always purchased them in the UK, but am now looking a little further afield.

For those not in the US or Canada, do you buy yours online and get them shipped over? The price difference is quite big.

And is there anywhere cheaper than the US?

Lenses / EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM or EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM

A very nice problem to have I know, but I have an important sporting event to shoot in April and have decided to rent a EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM or EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM.

As it is a fast moving sport (think soccer/football/rugby) in an open air stadium, I am very tempted to couple my 1D X with the 400 f/2.8L IS II USM especially as a Group A lens it makes the most of the 1D X's AF system, and will perform better in low light (thought the entire pitch will be very well flood lit. But (always a but isn't there!), the extra reach of the EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM could be great to have. Both are version II.

I am not new to sports, but have never owned or used one of the very big whites so I do appreciate any input from those that do/have.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 1D X - Few Questions

Finally bought the 1D X, and will be putting it to the test later today. I just wanted to ask those that have one (or more) a few quick questions:

1) How long do you find the battery lasts when shooting sports with frequent long bursts etc. (shooting RAW only)?

2) Are there any smaller battery rechargers available? (makes no difference if you do not travel, but it is pretty big if you do - though thankfully it is not heavy).

3) Has anyone run into any problems regarding the noise the camera makes when using it at sporting events, where noise is frowned upon?

4) How long did it take you to get used to the different AF system/options? I will be testing it on the job later today and will probably keep changing settings though have decided to start with AF Point Expansion (Manual selection, surrounding points) and then switch between cases 1, 4 and 6.

5) Is it the fine tuning of those Cases that takes the most time to learn and perfect?

6) What CF card - in terms of read/write speeds - do you recommend? I have Lexar Pro 400Xs. Should I get faster to make the most out of the 1DX.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 1D X Serial Number with New Firmware

Does anyone know if it is possible to tell which firmware a 1D X has on it simply from the serial number?

Am about to get one, but would prefer one that has all the latest firmware on it so I do not have to do that, until they release the new firmware in May. The shop I am buying it from says it has just come from Canon so one would expect it to have the latest but still, I thought it may be worth asking here.

Is it possible to tell from the serial number?
