It's the mouse that does the cleaning complaining.

The Gig-E specification has a feature called Auto-MDIX which detects your cable and configures it to connect to either a router or straight-through, so if it adheres to the specification no crossover cable is needed.  I'm a networking engineer in my real life and use Gig-E in this configuration all the time.

If you loan me you 1Dx for several months I should be able to test it out :-)

If nothing else you have to buy it for the "Shorty Forty" name (and $200 price tag).''

I would like it to be a little faster but 2.8 does the trick most of the time.

I'd have to agree with the amount of detail in the highlights.  In this shot of an owl at the zoo the midday sun was blasting down on the upper quarter of this owls face.  Look at what I recovered with one slider in lightroom:

I could never do this with my 7d.

Also I've noticed my 5D has much higher IQ when used with teleconverters than 7d but perhaps that just because it's using the whole lens.

The 100MM 2.8L Macro IS is a great lens, and with its macro capability you can get some great (and unusual) shots.  It has very good IS and IQ.

I have the 85mm 1.8 and borrowed the 85mm 1.2L from Canon to see if it would be worth the upgrade.  While the $2K 1.2L is a great lens it actually has a few drawbacks compared to its $400 little brother.  It's quite heavy/big and much slower to focus.  Also the DOF at <1.8 is quite narrow and if your wanted to use it well I think you'd need to have it on a tripod and be doing lots of minor adjustments - I see its best use as a studio lens.

On the flip side the 1.8 85mm has surprisingly solid construction, very good IQ, and much faster focus, so out of the two if I were shooting photos at a family gathering I'd rather have the 1.8 actually.

For just walking around I generally use the 24-105 4.0L and one prime in my bag.  For nature shots I carry the 70-200 is II (a great lens in all respects) and the 2.0x extender.   One great thing about the 5DMKIII is that you can still get great IQ at ISO 6400 and even higher so where the 4.0 before was kindof pushing it in low light with older models it's less of in issue in my opinion with the MKIII.  You could get the 24-105 + 1.8 85MM for less than the 1.2 85mm.

I'd actually recommend renting or borrowing a few of the lenses to see what you think.  Of course there is a little less risk buying the L quality lenses because they retain their value pretty well if you trade.

I have the 7D and the X10 and a 5DMKII.  My recommendation would be the 7D, I think it's an incredible value considering the solid construction and features, great AF, etc.

My 11 year old daughter wanted to learn about photography so I set her up with my old rebel and spent an hour explaining about shutter speed, aperture, iso, etc.  and only taught her how to use the "M" setting.  After a few weeks she can pretty much nail the exposure in her head or if not adjust quickly after looking at histogram.  I eventually showed her how to use AV for rapidly changing light conditions but she doesn't use it as she doesn't always agree with the exposure decisions the camera makes.   Anyway think it's a great way to introduce someone the "hard" way and have them find it's not that hard.

I think you are talking about the 24-105L kit lens?

Yes, I meant the 24-105L.  I also have the 28-135 and it's OK on a crop sensor but crappy on a full frame.

I have a 7D and similar set of glass as yours.  Spending $3.5K for 5D3 wasn't in the cards so I bought a used 5D2 2 weeks ago for $1500.  Comparing 7D to 5D2 my impressions were:

- Wow, AF on 5D Mkii is pretty bad compared to 7d.  Slower, with fewer focus points.
- Build quality on 5D Mkii is slightly worse than 7d.  In particular the CF cover seemed a little flimsier but I doubt it would ever be a problem

- Image quality is fantastic on 5DmkII.  I took some photos with the 28-135L kit lens on a trip with my kids to the farm and was blown away by how much detail there was in an image compared to 7D, not just in number of pixels but how accurate those pixels are as you look at 100% crops.   I can crop more and still get high detail.  Having both a crop sensor and full frame lets me get more out of the lenses I do have - use the 70-200 with extender/7D for outdoor sports and use 70-200 with 5D for portraits for example.

For weddings I would think the 5DmkIII would be great - combination of great low light and autofocus would be great for catching moments at weddings where you're often inside and everything is moving around.  If I wanted to photograph full time I would get one in a heartbeat.  Being an occasional freelancer I can make do with what I have.

I ordered a body from J&R on the 9th, website said it was expected to ship on the 11th.    Nothing shipped yet as of the 13th.  If I find out anything from them I'll post it.
