Software & Accessories / Focal for Mac beta released Sept 14th
« on: September 17, 2012, 01:16:08 PM »
If you have a license you can download it here
It is only usable on mac os lion not mountain lion.
You also need another software before installing.
You click on the latest stable version portion and mac osx icon then below click on the download by clicking the word "Runtime". The other downloads don't do anything to help

If you try downloading focal and starting it it will just tell you to get this. Took me a little trial and error, so i thought i'd save you some time. You will need your license with that long code that starts and ends with ##. You also should enter your camera serial number, you don't need all the sn#'s you registered, one will do.

EOS Bodies / My next Canon in my dreams
« on: September 12, 2012, 03:48:35 AM »
They could make a mini 1Dx, thow FF in it and charge $4/$4,500 making it basically a beefed up 5dm3 but designed for sports with 8/10fps. Also allow the Grip attachment to use a 1d series battery for higher voltage output speeding up the focus system like a 1D, they could charge $600 for the grip then. They could always keep the 1dx tracking and face detection out like on the 5dm3. A 6D would however need to be under a 5dm3 so maybe this camera i mention should be a 3D or at least from a number level being 1 the highest level Canon camera and 5D second highest, maybe put something between them. I know this has prob been discussed and i did think the next 7d should be APS-H but this is something else entirely. The market needs this kind of camera. Canon should be in the process of fulfilling something like this i would think. Who cares if it takes some of the share from the 1dx, you want the premium camera you still get the 1dx. This type of camera would be the first to have the power of a 1d series camera by making the grip the extra source for its kick! Then for the wedding photog's like myself we can get by without that grip for weddings but when we need to shoot sports like i do then the grip makes sense to have. So at like $5100 people will struggle with the features and price over the 1dx. From a marketing standpoint people always want the middle package like wedding packages. They can't afford top but they don't want to go cheap either so this like how apple also prices and puts features in their products to force the difficulty it is pure genius to do so.
Sorry if i seem scatter brained its almost 4am lol.

Sports / Shooting the Grand Rapids Mud Run tomorrow!
« on: August 24, 2012, 01:58:23 PM »
My sports company has shot the GR Mud run for the past 3 yrs and it has been a lot of fun! Here is my promo images for this year. The idea is to get a shot of them before they go in the mud and then after they do the mud run to see how messy they end up lol! I had to download them from my FB blog since they are on my home computer and not my lappy. Here is where i posted.
Also these are really low res, the real deal is sharp and colorful!

EOS Bodies / For an colorful take on the 5dm3/D800 Fake Chuck Westfall

These guys crack me up but they also have tests and proof as well as real experience with both. While they inform, they add a little "color" to explain. :D

EOS Bodies - For Video / Chuck westfall on the sharpness of the 5dm3
« on: August 20, 2012, 09:08:23 AM »
Here is a video addressing firmware but also a few questioned asked by planet 5d.

One thing I thought interesting was that Chuck says in response to a question about the sharpness of the 5dm3 that a lot of data would be lost if the images were sharper because they are able to collect more data from an image without excessively sharp images and after adding sharpening later it sharpens up much nicer having more data. That was my take on what was said.

EOS Bodies / Your Canon EOS 5D Mark III user tips
« on: August 16, 2012, 02:07:11 PM »
I personally own the EOS 5D Mark III, I would like to start two threads for the new EOS cameras. This thread is here for you to offer shooting tips be it lighting and exposures with the 5D Mark III, focus points, Autofocus Case settings, Iso's, anything that you select in camera to get your best image captures for what you do. Please be generous with your tips, this will be a big help for all who own the camera!

OMG! Forget LR4 for noise. I usually don't turn many enhanced features on on a camera but I decided to test things out and while the sharpest image at 25,600 iso is no noise reduction even the middle (standard) noise reduction is very nice! I plan to keep it on standard. According to page 145 in the 5dm3 manual in low iso's it further reduces the noise in the shadows only not paying attention to the rest of the image.
I am including a screen shot showing no noise reduction and standard noise reduction in camera. For those who want super techy views and full images. just go ahead and do it then post, i don't care to. If your eyes dont see what i am saying then just look into it for yourself.

Shooting sports often times things are pretty harsh and backlit rendering 1 to 2 stops over exposure to expose the skin correctly. The highlight tone priority that was first introduced in the 1dm3 and now also in my 5dm3 is wow! I used it on the 1dm3 on occasion, but with the 5dm3 anything lit strongly be it window light or sunlight the blown areas are reduced to pretty much nothing! It truly is amazing. According to Canon the highlights dynamic range is increased and the shadows dynamic range lessened but unless the shadows are crucial to the composition highlight tone priority is the bomb!

The next 7D with an aps-h sensor like the 1dm4 would kill! I'd buy it. Sensor size has always been one of the largest points of any camera. Bigger sensored cameras have more photo-site space and with gapless lens technology on the 1DX and 5DM3 its a big win over the Nikons non-D series sports cameras. Its also a win over Sony and others that are 1.5 or 1.6 crop. This would separate the 7d from the two digit series cameras like the 60d. It would kind of take the old helm of the sports camera but in the middle spot the 1dm2/3/4 held.

So the 50L and 5DM3 is a winning combo but has anyone been able to use other focus points on the 5dm3 because i dont feel comfortable using it with anything other than the center since the other focus points don't accurately focus it seems. I wonder if there will be an update to the 50L since i don't think its going to work well with the 5dm3... I wanted to shoot a wedding with it but now i am not sure i want it to be my main lens on the 5dm3 because focus recompose is a pain when doing journalism action type candids. I used the 5D and the 70-200L II and it focuses very accurately. The 24-70 hasn't had much time on my 5DM3 but it seems ok.
Has anyone else been able to get accurate focus with the 50L on the 5DM3?

EOS Bodies / Possible issues with Sandisk Extreme Pro 32g CF
« on: May 24, 2012, 10:53:08 AM »
When i put the card in the 5dm3 the red buffer light flickers non- stop when i put any other card it flickers for about 2 sec to read the card then the red light goes out. WTF?

EOS Bodies / 5DM3 in camera sharpening
« on: April 30, 2012, 02:34:10 PM »
I have my in camera sharpening set to off as well as in camera noise reduction, many shooters believe it best to have that control for after the fact edits. Has anyone taken the time to test the in camera sharpening settings and the diff levels? In quick reviewing this the in camera Canon software seems pretty darn good.

Also, what is in your mind the best subjects to use to test this out?

I plan to get into this more this week and wondered if anyone has taken that journey on yet.
