Software & Accessories / Question about Cards for dual slots on 5D III
« on: August 25, 2012, 11:51:03 AM »
I've been happily using 16GB Sandisk Extreme Pro CF cards in my 5DII and continued using them after I got my 5DIII about a month ago.  Haven't tried using the second card slot yet but want to start taking advantage by writing backup images to SD cards.

What cards are people using or recommend?  I really trust Sandisk, btw.  I'm torn between writing RAW to the CF card and JPGs to the SD or just writing RAW to both cards.  Any thoughts?

The Canon loyalty program is something where you can get 20% most refurbished Canon cameras by trading in any old, used Canon camera (point-n-shoot, DSLR, digital, film, etc) even if it's broken.  I don't think all the refurbished cameras qualify but most do.  You have to call Canon to verify what qualifies and if it's in stock.  If you want something you also pay tax+shipping on the discounted price of the refurb being purchased.  But I think they send you a shipping label to send them the old trade-in.

Overall it's a pretty sweet deal, IMHO  :)

The number for the Loyalty Program is 1-866-443-8002

Here's a link to Canon's refurbished products.

btw - I've heard of some people picking up an old broken Canon point-n-shoot or film camera in a pawn shop or off craigslist for dirt cheap and using that to get 20% off a nice DSLR.

Lenses / Re: Any updates on the 24-70 2.8 II lens?

Actually, here's the "real" U.K. press release.  It's supposed to be September 2015  ;D ;D ;D

It simply means that it's the previous generation camera, has been replaced by a newer version and Canon would like to clear out old stock.

Canon General / Re: To CPS or not to CPS...That is the question
« on: August 13, 2012, 10:32:39 PM »
The Silver level used to be free and included a 20% discount but no free clean/checks and other items.  They changed that (last year I believe) and now you get pretty much nothing.

For $100 the Gold is definitely worth it.  A friend sent in a camera for really minor stuff which ended up being basically a clean/check and paid over $200 plus shipping.  The Gold would have more than paid for that one trip.  I really like the free strap too  :)

The Platinum is probably worth it only for those with a lot of gear and/or are really hard on it.

I'm a Gold member, btw.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 5d III - Number of Shutter Actuations?
« on: August 02, 2012, 10:54:00 PM »
A good way to get shutter actuations (5D Mark III is now supported!) is through gPhoto2.

It's a bit cumbersome to get it up and running, but you also get tethered shooting, and intervelometer functionality.

A write up on installation and usage of gPhoto can be found here: http://photolifetoys.blogspot.com/2012/08/control-your-camera-with-gphoto2-via.html

Thanks Ew.  That looks like a good solution.  A bit involved but definitely worth a shot if it works.  I won't have time for a few days but will give it try when I have some downtime.

Unfortunately http://eoscount.com/ is only for the PC.  I'm on a Mac.

Any other suggestions?  .... and no, an abacus is not a solution  ;)

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 5d III - Number of Shutter Actuations?
« on: July 30, 2012, 01:47:00 AM »
On the previous 5D bodies there was not a reliable way to get the count for the number of shutter actuations over the life of the camera.  Well, there is an app that I believe works for the Mark II but it's accuracy has been questioned by some.

Anyway, is there a new way with the 5D III to get the number of clicks?  Ideally something within the camera itself or maybe with an app like EOS Utility?

Very cool looking shirts.

Any chance of a discount for Canon Rumors readers?  ;)

Lenses / Re: Why is the 24-70 MK1 price so high.
« on: July 27, 2012, 01:20:46 AM »
My original 24-70 was awesome for the first few years I owned it.  But then something just wore out and the images started becoming soft unless I stopped down to around f/5.6.  I had it re-calibrated 3 times but it never was the same.  Just couldn't rely on that lens so I sold it.

Really, really bummed (pissed actually) that the Mark II is taking so friggin' long to be shipped  >:(

EOS Bodies / Re: Mark III price dropping
« on: July 27, 2012, 01:14:21 AM »
I was all set to buy the 5DIII from B&H for $3350, but it's back to $3500 now for some reason. Amazon is back to $3500 now too. What gives? I'm definitely not buying it without the warranty. Anybody know another place to get it for around the $3350 mark that is authorized by Canon?

That's strange that the price jumped back up.  It also sux  :(

What's also odd is that I just called and spoke with someone at B&H because I purchased it at the $3484 price and told him I saw the price was at $3349.  He immediately credited my credit card for the $135 difference.  Did he know the price was going back up?  Maybe?  Maybe not?

I think even at $3500 it's a great camera and worth every penny.  If a person needs it for professional use (like myself), it'll pay for itself really quickly.  Makes my original 5D almost feel like a point-n-shoot  ;)

Pricewatch Deals / Re: Canon EOS 5D Mark III Price Drop
« on: July 26, 2012, 02:24:14 PM »
Called. Since I'm within 30 days they refunded the difference from 3484. Awesome. This is why you buy from BH...

I did this also.  Bought mine from B&H less than 2 weeks ago for $3484.  Called and they said it's within their 30day price match guarantee period so they refunded the difference to bring my cost down to the current $3349.  Thumbs up to B&H  :D

EOS Bodies / Re: 5DIII custom file names ?
« on: July 25, 2012, 12:51:02 AM »
Dunno if it's different in 5D3, but I believe that first _ is an indication that you're using Adobe RGB for your color space. sRGB keeps the first letter as is. At least with my cameras...

That solved it!  Thanks shunsai  :D

EOS Bodies / 5DIII custom file names ?
« on: July 24, 2012, 09:08:13 PM »
It's cool that they finally added the feature to custom name the files coming out of the 5DIII which was possible on 1-series cameras...But... I tried it and the first character (of 4) I enter never gets included.  Why?  The first character is always just the familiar underscore "_".

If for example I want my initials "BML_", I end up with "_ML_".

Anybody else seeing this?  Any solution?

Thanks in advance.

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D3 Light Leak Issue - Did you send yours in???
« on: July 24, 2012, 09:03:25 PM »
I think this only affects certain cameras.  Look at the link below and check your serial number to find out if yours is one of the possible "victims"  ;)
