A new 5D II for $1,699 is a steal, and the 5D III should be down to $3,000 most everywhere in the next couple of months. If you search daily, (or check back here and at the digital picture) they notify you of price drops. Numerous times the 5D III has sold for $3,000, and that fire sale adorama had on their ebay store saw them go for $2,749 (almost made me buy).

Supposed to drop to $1,699 everywhere until they are sold out. I believe they have or shortly will be discontinuing this camera.

Wow, good thing i sold mine back in april. Current owners will see their resale plummet. Great camera, just didn't love the AF system. That's $60 less than at the canon refurb store.

Yes, the supertele will get you noticed!  I doubt there'd be much real difference between the 500 II and 600 II in terms of getting noticed.  Having said that, with the hood in place, the 600/4 is the largest of the current Canon lenses (bigger than the 800/5.6). 

Personally, I shoot a lot of birds so the 600mm is the better choice.  Combined with the 1.4x III, the resulting IQ at 840mm f/5.6 is equivalent to the 800/5.6 lens, and while no shorter, the combo is a lot lighter.

And you can go back to just 600 with an extra stop of light, but not with the 800.

Constant apetured lenses (24-105 and 24-70) are just larger and heavier than a variable apetured lens because of the glass involved. A 28-135 will be smaller and lighter, so maybe look there. My 70-200 2.8L IS II is my walk around zoom....

I am hoping for a 7D II that addresses the 7D's issues (not knocking the camera, i own one, but it has a few drawbacks), and releases the big mp FF body. Those would be my two new bodies to cover all photographic situations. Here's to hoping.....

To me, this just means more cameras on the horizon. They seem to be adjusting the price of the 5D mk III to establish it's place in the market (hopefully two new FF's coming, one below and one above it). Just my own opinion....

I own a 16-35 II, so to me, if the 82mm front element equals a better end result then i'm glad they used it. But for anyone not owning a lens that takes 82mm filters already, i guess it's more gear to buy (but that's what photography is about, spend spend spend...) In any event, the first impressions of this lens sound pretty good.

Don't mean to butt in on this post, but does anyone that owns the 1dx have anything they don't like so far? I sold my 5dII to get one, and really loved the sharpness from it but wanted an updated system. Can you crop photos as well with the 1dx as, say, the 5dII and 5dIII and be still super sharp? How does everyone feel about the dynamic range? Thank you

I can say that the exposure is more accurate and the colors are more accurate, on the 1DX vs either 5D's.  You cannot quite crop as far on the 1DX as you can on the 5D3.  It's not a huge difference, just be careful about lens choice vs. object you are shooting to ensure that you don't have to do a ton of cropping.  For most typical crops, the 1DX is just great.  The pictures from the 1DX tend to look a bit better than the 5D3.

I would never crop if i didn't need to, but small birds can be tough and i can't quite afford a 600mm f4 at the moment so it may be required from time to time. Thanks for the feedback.
