Lenses / Re: Recommendation 70-200/2.8+2x vs 100-400 f/4-5.6L ?
« on: February 13, 2012, 08:02:50 AM »
I own a 7D and a 70-200 2.8L IS II and both the 1.4 and 2x mk.III extenders, and i will tell you in a heartbeat to go with my lens and an extender. However, i will recommend you go with the 1.4 rather than the 2. Keep in mind that your cropped body turns this lens into a 113-323mm 2.8 without an extender, so you'll be around a 158-452mm f/4 with the 1.4 extender on and still produce sharp pictures. I have only had the 2x extender for a week and only used it on one outing, so i can't recommend it. I will say though, that inital photos don't seem to be sharp at all. Actually, i hope this might grab the attention of someone with the mk.II 70-200 and mk.III 2x extender to respond here, as i am interested to see if others say their images are sharp or fuzzy looking with that setup. In short, go with the 70-200 2.8 is II and the 1.4x III and you will be very happy.

Lenses / Re: Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L II

C'mon, stay positive. Maybe IS and internal focusing will be offered as a firmware update.....

P.S. :-)

70-200mm f/2.8L IS MKII, if you can afford it. Unless you need to go pretty wide or pretty long, this lens has you covered, and it's sharp, sharp, sharp! Even though it's on the larger and heavier side, it's my general walk-around lens.

Lenses / Re: What lens to buy?
« on: October 24, 2011, 08:36:00 AM »
Hey guys recently joined this forum was wondering what kind of lens i should get next. I am currently doing concerts and landscape but am getting into weddings.

My equipment is

5DMKII

50mm f1.8
nikon 50mm1.4
70-200mm f/2.8 IS II
17-40 f/4

A 100mm f/2.8L IS macro could be fun, doubles as a portrait lens as well as a very fine macro and has a nice wide aperture. I have the lens and like it on both my 7D and 5D MKII.

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D mkll. Where to purchase
« on: October 20, 2011, 07:17:44 AM »
I know the 5D mk ll instant $100 rebate is going on until the end of October, but based on a few posts I have seen on CR, contributors are claiming the camera body is $2000. Am I missing a promotional code or something? Here is the US (with the rebate) we are looking at $2399...

Henry's of canada, no other place to go in my opinion. I live in NY and ordered mine about 2 weeks ago, $2,012 shipped international express, took two days to get to me from toronto. They are great to deal with, and you still retain the normal canon warranty. If you want a 5D Mark II, don't hesitate. Paypal only for out-of-country purchases, so make sure you have a paypal account...

EOS Bodies / Re: Shooting in manual
« on: October 07, 2011, 08:12:53 PM »
I was forced to shoot in manual yesterday, too much backlighting was going to result in poor exposures, and it was much easier to use manual exposure.  I could have used exposure compensation, but I found it easier to use manual.

How about spot metering mode?

I find myself shooting in M mode all the time, but i do tend to change my metering mode rather than over/underexpose to get proper exposure. Whatever works best for the camera operator though....

Software & Accessories / Re: Advice re: 1.4x III extender
« on: September 28, 2011, 05:36:36 PM »
I have a 7D with a 70-200 2.8 IS II with a 1.4 III extender, and the photos are pleasingly sharp considering the extra glass the extender adds.

With all the talk of other countries having big price drops, i anticipated (hoped) we might see $400-500 off. Darn, i planned on buying one, but now i'll just wait for the mark III

EOS Bodies / Re: Advice on purchasing a new APS-C body

Thanks again, i also was going to set the lens at focal lengths to see roughly what i would be seeing/shooting if it was a prime with a fixed focal length. I'm not in a rush really, but it would be nice to have a lens with a wider FOV than i have now to shoot the fall colors that will be on the way around here in a month or so (but that's not a good enough reason for me to rush into a lens buy).

I appreciate the advise sincerely, i go from thinking i know what i want to having no idea. There are many canon branded lenses that fit what i am looking for, to an extent, but all differ in small ways that make them largely different from each other. I hope to build up a number of useful lenses over time, but for right now i would like a fast normal zoom, and either a normal to wide/normal length prime, or a wide-ish fast zoom. In your opinion, how does no IS affect the 16-35 and 24-70 L 2.8 lenses? My lenses are IS, and i like to handhold shoot alot but do own both a monopod and tripod (just like to shoot by hand when possible).

That's why i figured on a 24mm (38.4) or 35mm (56), because it would be a useful focal length on either format and has a wide apeture for good low light performance. Good advice on the EF-S lenses, though i'm not completely sold on them given their price and no weather resistance. I bought the camera in early march, the two lenses in late march, and have been pulling my hair out trying to decide which lenses i would choose to cover wide and normal zoom while still having a wide and constant apeture. The other two lenses i bought without hesitation and i love them, but the last two i need are tough to decide on. I've read and watched as many reviews as i could help to in the meantime, but i'm still not 100% on my best option. Thank you for the insight, which is helpful considering you own my camera plus some of the lenses i am considering.

You've got that right, i'm trying to decide on a prime that will give me a good wide angle on the cropped sensor, as well as a standard zoom. Kind of caught up in all of the rumors now, and hoping a 24-70 2.8L II shows up soon. Been eyeing up the 16-35 2.8L II, the 24 1.4 II, the 35 1.4, and the 24-70 2.8L. I have also been looking at zeiss primes, but i think for certain situations i will prefer autofocus, leading me to believe i will be sticking with a canon prime.

And i do realize the 18-135 is an EF-S lens, and it is being sold to my brother in a few days as he is buying a 60D or 7D in the next day or two.
