It seems like Canon knew about the problem during manufacturing and the units with the A or black markings in the battery compartment could be units with some bandaid fix in place. Looks like a design issue.

It depends. My 5D3 body did not need any afma for all my five l lenses. Recently I had to send in the body to canon service for a sensor change. After the sensor change the afma drifted to about +5 to +8. I contacted canon about it and they asked me to resend it in for focus calibration. Some accident happened during the af adjustment procedure at canon and they burnt the board (the tech told me that the af was on for too long during testing). I received the new body and after checking the af, it did not need any afma at all for all five lenses.

So, it seems that new 5D3 bodies with factory settings seems to not require any afma. However, the local canon service center may not have the same factory equipment for sensor af adjustment, and the af calibration may not be 100% correlated to the factory equipment. Therefore if any sensor change/reassembly is done at the service center, it may require some afma.

These are really good shots! Well done! Two bodies and two lenses. What is the lens & body combination you used, e.g. did you have the 85L2 attached to the 1ds3, and the 24-70L2 attached to the 5D3 all the time to minimize lens changing?

After reading this, I will check my outer AF points too. I had my 5D3 cmos sensor changed under warranty by Canon recently due to unremovable dirt inside the sensor filter. One wonders what is happening with Canon QC.

The 24-105 f4 IS is a versatile lens for dslr videos. The IS helps a lot in stabilization.

Form-fitting 580 modifiers (e.g. StoFen) do not fit on the 600 head.  However, modifiers for the older 550EX will fit, albeit snugly.

Stofen has released a new diffuser specifically designed for the 600EX.

I'm sure there are some people for whom one single feature is so critical that it's the only one that matters, but for most, it's important to consider the whole camera...

What really matters is what sort of photography you can do with it and so far we haven't been treated to any earth shattering breakthroughs in image making as a result of these two stops of additional DR.  If it was as significant as some would have us believe, then we would easily be able to walk into any gallery and pick out the Nikon images from the Canon ones – but we cannot.  We continue to be treated to the same me tired, contrived examples that are completely devoid of any artistic value whatsoever and I doubt that THIS will change even if Canon were to come out with a 15 stop camera.
