EOS Bodies / Re: Nikon user Swapping to Canon with a 5D3
« on: August 31, 2012, 09:39:01 PM »
Never put more than 30 megapixel on a small FF sensor. If you want more megapixels buy a medium format camera to earn your money.

Could you explain your statement?

Lenses / Re: Center Pinch Lens Caps
« on: August 03, 2012, 09:50:22 PM »
I've tried some centre pinch types from China but the material quality is bad. The letterings are made out of stickers that peel out after some some.

I am now using Tamron cap for all my L lenses. I get them for a good price here http://www.ebay.com/itm/GENUINE-TAMRON-FLC55-55mm-55-Front-Lens-Cap-Nikon-Canon-/310413367970?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4846141aa2

5D MK III Sample Images / Re: Thank you 5D Mark III AF System...
« on: August 01, 2012, 01:36:56 AM »
I have it set to basic Profile #2 for most things in the AF menu. I use the smallest AF points only, and only the cross type ones. I have it set so that it automatically changes AF points when you go from horizontal to vertical shooting. It helps a lot in fast situations. I also have it set so that the DOF preview button, when pressed and held down, changes the camera from ONE SHOT to AI SERVO, so it gives me the best of both worlds. Took me about 1 day of shooting to get used to that, now it just feels normal. And works quite well.

Any camera will have trouble, at f/4, this close to a subject, coming in and out of focus like that, towards the camera.... no camera system, other than manual focusing will really give you great consistent results. But the 5D Mark III does pretty darn good at it if you ask me, which is pretty impressive. I got off a few more shots of her that were not perfect or "good" focus, they were OK for focus, but it didn't take too many attempts to get it perfect. Also, her face or hair or whatever wasn't perfect for most, so this just worked well.

Good technique still is the best bet. I was tracking her with the DOF preview AI SERVO technique, and waiting for the split second where she's hanging in the air at the end of the swing motion, and then taking the photo. The 5D3 did very well. If I wanted to make it far easier I could have stopped down to f/6.3 or f/7.1 and taken a step back, and it would have been far easier. But I still wanted some bokeh background. :)

Thank you for sharing your setup!

You may need to heat up the sensor via live view for 3-4 minutes before the manual sensor cleaning http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1170332

Lighting / Re: 600ex-rt overheating?
« on: June 10, 2012, 09:04:27 PM »
This may be a dumb question but are you sure they were firing at only 1/64?

Try test firing one at 1/64 ten times in a row and see if it overheats and activates the red screen. Then wait and try 20. It shouldn't overheat at that power level.

This will be a good way to test it. I have one 600EX-RT on order and wonder if I should hold on now.

Could an omnibounce for the 580ex2 fit the 600ex? Perhaps all it needs is to cut out a notch for the gel sensor?

Canon has issued an advisory on the issue http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/eos_slr_camera_systems/eos_digital_slr_cameras/eos_5d_mark_iii?pageKeyCode=prdAdvDetail&docId=0901e02480532d6b

To Users of the EF200mm f/2L IS USM and EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM Lenses with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR Camera.

Thank you for using Canon products.

We have confirmed that when the EF200mm f/2L IS USM and some units of the EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM lenses are used with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR Camera, the Lenses may emit an abnormal noise.

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR Camera does not need to be repaired as a result of this phenomenon.

The support measures for this phenomenon have been decided and they are as described below.

Phenomenon
If either of the Lenses is attached to the camera with the Image Stabilizer switch on the Lenses set to ON, the Image Stabilizer will synchronize with the autofocusing (AF) function and an abnormal noise may occur. This abnormal noise does not affect captured images.
This phenomenon only occurs when the camera is used with either of the Lenses, and does not occur when the camera is used with other lenses.

Affected Products
EF200mm f/2L IS USM Lens
EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM Lens

*This phenomenon does not occur with cameras other than the EOS 5D Mark III.

*If the fifth and sixth digit of the six-digit alphanumeric number that is imprinted on the lens mount of the above EF lenses is of any of the following numbers, the lens is affected.

EF200mm f/2L IS USM: If the fifth and sixth digit is 00, 01, or 02.
    EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM:If the fifth and sixth digit is 00, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, or 06.

The Lenses affected by this phenomenon will be inspected and repaired free of charge beginning May 21, 2012.  If you own one of the affected Lenses, please contact our Customer Support Center.

This information is for residents of the United States and Puerto Rico only. If you do not reside in the USA or Puerto Rico, please contact the Canon Customer Support Center in your region.

The Kirk plate looks to be very nicely rounded and contoured to the camera body.

Any pics of the Kirk plate?

59
How does the Kirk L plate fare in this regard i.e. any design issue with "digging" into the camera body?

I have used this method for all my L lenses http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/cameras/1ds3_af_micoadjustment.html It's an accurate method and it is free
