Lighting / Studio Light Power Question?
« on: November 21, 2014, 08:29:18 AM »
So, I have have two Bowens 500R studio lights.  They are rated at 15Ws-500Ws over 5 stops.  But what exactly does that mean?

To me I'm guessing that every time a turn it up a stop, it doubles the Ws - but I might be wrong.  I would think that it actually has 6 stops which go as follows:

1 - 15Ws
2 - 30Ws
3 - 60Ws
4 - 120Ws (roughly 125)
5 - 240Ws (roughly 250)
6 - 480Ws (roughly 500)

I should also note that I have two dials:

The first is for complete stops (1-5)
The second is for 1/10th stops (0-1)

It actually goes up to 6 (the full stop dial turned to 5, and the 1/10 dial turned up to +1.0), so did Bowens list that incorrectly?

THEN, that leads to my next question - how much dimmer are the 400W and 250W lights?  Is the 400W less that 1 stop at full power compared to the 500W, and is the 250W exactly one stop less than the 500W at full power?

I only ask because I'm looking to get a two more lights, and I want to keep my options open.  Thanks.

Lenses / 16-35 II vs what?
« on: March 20, 2014, 06:55:30 PM »
I'm looking for a wide angle for my 5diii, but I'm not overwhelmed with the 16-35.  Is there anything out there that compares?  I need 2.8, auto-focus, and I'd prefer the zoom capabilities.  Thanks.

Software & Accessories / Wedding Photographers-Where do you print Albums???
« on: September 25, 2013, 12:25:36 PM »
I was just curious where people print their wedding albums in the US.  I've used the Aperture and Lightroom ones before, which were nice, but I'm looking for something better - any suggestions?  Thanks.

Software & Accessories / Latest on Magic Lantern?
« on: September 16, 2013, 03:26:11 PM »
I was just curious if anyone is up-to-date with Magic Lantern, more specifically with Magic Lantern on the 5D3?

I remember all the hype that popped up a while back, but I haven't heard much since.  I remember RAW video without audio was working fairly well (albeit on expe$ive memory cards), zoomed video, and other little features, but I have NO IDEA where the software stands now.

So, if anyone out there has the latest ML version and using a 5D3, would you mind telling me what's awesome about it, what stinks, and what is likely in the works?

Lenses / Err 1 on 100mm f/2.8
« on: August 21, 2013, 11:51:52 PM »
So today, out of nowhere, my Canon 100mm macro started giving me an "Err 1" message.  I cleaned the contacts and it doesn't work.  I tried other lenses on my 5d3 and they all worked, then I tried the 100mm on my 50D and it started to work, but as soon as i take the picture i get the error.  I'm assuming that this is something that I will have to send it to get fixed.

I know this won't be productive, but i have to take some time to vent.  This lens is LESS THAN 3 YEARS OLD!!!  it cost me about $550 new, and now i have to fork over another $153+ to get this thing fixed?  it's not like i dropped it, got it wet, banged it into the wall, or melted it - it just stopped working.  i checked online and apparently its some cable in the lens that burns out?  if this is the case, how can canon seriously expect users to pay this amount on something that is so new and out of their control?  way to stick by your products canon...

anyway, its now my birthday - thanks canon.

Software & Accessories / Selling Your Wedding Pics Online???
« on: September 12, 2012, 02:06:45 PM »
I have a quick question for your wedding photographers out there:

I recently did a wedding and I'm trying to post the pics online for people to purchase/order.  I'm not looking to make money off the pictures, but I just wanted to make it so everyone could get the pics that they wanted.  What do you guys use for this?  I was thinking something like Snapfish, but I'm open to suggestions.

Also, I'm using Lightroom and I was wondering how people use it to export their pics for these sites.  Do you do 100% jpgs, at high quality (90/100)?

Thanks - and I really appreciate all the input.

Lenses / Renting a Wedding Lens
« on: August 29, 2012, 09:08:18 PM »
Hello, I'm going to start another one of these things. So here goes:

I am shooting a wedding in a couple weeks and here is what I've got already.

5D3 & 50D
430EXII, YN560, and some wireless triggers
Lightstand & Umbrella
20mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.8, 100mm f/2.8, 24-70L

My question is, which other lens should I rent?  I'm thinking either the 50L or the 85L.

I haven't used either one before, but I really want something to get some great shots with.  Mainly for the "set" shots, because I think the others will more than suffice for the general shots (ceremony, reception, candids, etc.).

Any thoughts?

Lighting / First YN-622 Review (video)
« on: August 21, 2012, 12:42:53 AM »
This is pulled from another user on a different forum - - (also, feel free to merge it with the existing thread, I just wanted to make sure people would see this)

Here are my conclusions.

At first it took me a second to get these started, but then I realized I accidentally set them in the wrong mode (holding channel for 3 seconds putting them in mix mode).

-Currently they don't work on my 1d mark IV, but yongnou has contacted me and is working on a fix. They currently work on my 5d3 and my 7d. I honestly thought they'd work fine on the 1d and 7d, but oh well.

-The build appears roughly the same as the pixel kings, minus the weirdo shape the kings had. The locking ring seems nicer and the metal hot shoe appears beefier (from what I remember, I sold mine two weeks ago).

-the pixel kings came with a nice carrying case and cables. the YN622's didnt, I wish they did. Looks like I'll just have to find a way to safely transport them.

-Quick start up time / shoot time. You can see in the video I shoot with the transceiver (tx) off, then turn it on and shoot right away without any issues.

-Manual / ETTL ratios is very easy to control especially on the 5d mark III. This is exactly how I expected them to work.

-MIX mode i haven't gotten into yet, again, i JUST got them today and literally opened them, and started filming.

-haven't used these with any YN560's yet, but im assuming they work just like dumb triggers

-i CLEARLY need to read the manual.

-I wish there was a USB port for possible firmware updates.

-LOVE the fact that they are transceivers!!

-Didn't test long distance, but will this weekend at my wedding. Since it's on 2.4gHz i'm sure it will be fine.

5D MK III Sample Images / From 50D to 5Diii - Amazed...
« on: August 06, 2012, 01:56:55 PM »
Let me start out by saying that my girlfriend (fiancĂ©) and I have been shooting with a 50D for a few years now.  It's a wonderful camera, but we needed a second for a few reasons.

1 - Two people sharing a camera when going out and taking pics can be annoying.

2 - We are starting to do weddings.  Using only one camera is risky and only one of us can take pics at a time.

3 - Full frame will bring new life to our lenses.

We've had the camera for about a week now, and there is a lot to learn.  The AF is unreal to me.  I can catch sparrows zooming through the air at 400mm with like a 95% success rate.  I don't think I ever got one on the 50D.  Also, the high ISO and quality at high ISO's has changed the way I take pics.  Instead of leaving it from 100-400 on the 50D, I can start it at 800 and go from there (higher if I need speed & and lower if I don't).  Anyway, here are some pics from our first week broken up by which lenses were used.

These were both with the 100mm (non L).  ISO's this high would look like garbage on the 50D for macro shoots, but here I don't even see a trace of noise.

Software & Accessories / Apple Announces Major Aperture Update!
« on: June 11, 2012, 01:41:54 PM »
No specifics, but apple just announced a major aperture update at the WWDC.  Hopefully, we will see what these are very soon.  I can just breathe a heavy sigh of relief knowing that they are still working to keep it up against Lightroom.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Want To Justify a 5Diii - Some Questions
« on: April 08, 2012, 10:54:52 PM »
First off, I want a 5Diii like woah.  You don't need to tell me that it's sweet and that I should get one.  So here goes...

I am a poor grad student.  I make some money on the side creating websites and doing odd jobs now and then, but nothing that is bringing in the big bucks.  I am basically a full-time student with lots of free time on my hands when I'm not studying and taking classes.

Currently, I own a 50D, which I love.  I would love to start doing some event photography and possibly weddings and things like that.  If I were to do so I really think I would need a FF with good high ISO capabilities.  Even the though the 50D is great, it just won't cut it for things like that as a primary body.

If you are just starting out, what can you expect to charge for events and weddings?  If I think I can make $3,500 in a reasonable amount of time I will go ahead and pull the trigger.  I will also point out that my fiancĂ© is a great photographer and she would probably go with me and take pictures at the same time to double our shots and perspectives.

Right now I have glass that I am totally happy with (20mm 2.8 - which will be fairly wide on a FF and has a great look on a crop, a 50mm 1.8 - not the best 50mm, but still a sweet lens, a 100mm 2.8 - great macro and portrait lens, and a 100-400L - probably won't be used at events), as well as light (430EXii & YN560), and other extras (tripod, gels, mini bounce, timers, wireless, etc.)

Any real world feedback would be highly appreciated.  Thanks.
