Lufthansa rule:"A piece of hand luggage may not be larger than 55 cm x 40 cm x 23 cm and may not weigh more than 8 kg."

If you get into trouble weight wise with your carry on take the camera with the heaviest lens on your shoulder. A camera is not hand luggage! When I need to travel with a lot of equipment and my bag is about ten kg I put the 70-200/2.8 on one camera body and carry it on my shoulder and no one has ever complained to me.

I fail to see what could be improved on the 35/1.4? It is my absolute favorite lens on crop and FF. But I am obviously missing something since there is a MKII in the pipeline......

The 24-105 is IMHO a perfect walkaround lens. I sold my 24-70 when I bought the 5D MKII and got the 24-105 as a kit with the camera. It's light, easy to carry and versatile. A bit slow, yes, but on a FF you can compensate with higher ISO. Some distortion at the wider end but that can be fixed in PP (I use PTLens).

When you start seeing that black line accross the top of a frame at high shutter speeds, but not low shutter speeds, stop using the camera and send it in for a new shutter before it falls apart or damages the mirror box.

Thanks - then I will do just that. For this trip I decided to travel light meaning one camera body and two lenses.....

I have just found a problem with my 5D MKII. It only shows at 1/2000 or shorter shutterspeed. Attached test picture is shot at f/2.5 ISO 100 and 1/6400 (lens 135/2). Mirror or shutter malfunctioning? Get a new camera?

This is a really difficult question indeed CHL!  I have the mk II version of the 70-200 2.8 zoom and the IQ is preatty much on par with the 135L, minus the extra stop that the 135 provide you.  I am getting the 135 anyway because I am looking for something lighter to carry.

I dont have experience with the version I of the 70-200mm zoom but I am told (and you cant read in these forums) the current version was a big improvement in the IQ.  If you already find you use the 70-200mm zoom a lot for your purposes, I would think you might be better getting the mk II first instead of getting the 135L. 

Keep in mind if you buy it before Dec 31st at B&H you get $400 off! ($1974).  This is a good buy! (the link is on the main CR page).

Fabulous on the 5DII, the 135L is that bit smoother than the 70-200 II. IQ of the 135 is better but not with the huge gap there used to be. The 135 makes a good street lens as it doesn't leap out at you and is surpisingly small. Minimum focus distance is small too!

Thank you both. I am going for the 135L because of less weight and it is more discreet compared to the 70-200 2.8. I have also come to the conclusion that the 35L and the 135L will make a very good combo for me on my 40D and 5DMKII. I live in Europe so I can not take advantage of any good deals with B&H - unless I travel to New York which is not a bad idea in itself :-)

I would appreciate your thoughts/advice on this. I have the 70-200 f/2.8 L IS (and the 85 f/1.8, 24-105 f/4 L, 35 f/1.4 L, TS-E 24 f/3,5L) and I mainly use them on a 5D MKII (have a 40D as well). I am very interested in getting the 135 f/2.0 but I am struggling with whether to buy that lens or sell the 70-200 in favour of the MKII version. And I can´t currently do both. I would say I am fairly "general" in my photography (means indoor low light, street, portrait, grandchildren......... rarely sports).

I bought the 24-70 for my 40D but I have just recently in addition also bought a 5DMK2 kit with the 24-105. I am now trying to find out for myself which of the two lenses to keep (no - I will not keep both. There are other lenses on the wish-list) and both are sharp. I am leaning towards keeping the 24-105 for it's IMO greater versatility and it is great on the 5D. The 24-70 is also a bit heavy and I have the 70-200 f/2.8 IS so I think I carry enough  anyway
