EOS Bodies / Re: Canon's Roadmap for 2013 [CR2]
« on: January 27, 2013, 04:05:22 PM »
So for those of us where it isn't obvious what the 4 lenses might be - in decreasing order of likelihood:

1) Non-L 50mm IS f 1.4-1.8 to replace the venerable 50mm f 1.4
- With the pancake 40mm, and the nifty 50mm, do they keep the 50mm as is or make a little refinement to it too? Could they do much for the price?

2-4/5) Successor /replacement to the 85mm f/1.8, 24mm, 28mm, 35mm

?

Lenses / Re: Any news about a new 85/1.2L III ?
« on: July 04, 2012, 04:29:58 PM »
Is the rate limiter the lens itself for focus?
I'm just wondering if putting this lens on a 5D Mark III or 1DX would give a quicker focus than other cameras?
(Is the Mark II 5D a better match due to the EgS focus screen option than the 5D Mark III or does it focus well without that? Could imagine the 1DX is the best of both worlds?!)

Wasn't there a rumor a few yers ago on Northern Light /CR then went quiet again?

Jasmine Star has a great blog entry on her favorite prime lenses for weddings.   (But she loves them all... so it's not going to give you a definite answer.)  Click the link below and scroll down half-way for her lens comments.

http://www.jasminestarblog.com/index.cfm?m=10&y=2011

I no longer shoot weddings professionally (working started to take the joy out of photography for me).  But - when I shoot weddings and events as favors, I only bring my prime kit (35/50/85/135) - and I always seem to grab the 35 and 85.  Those two deliver stunning results.  The 35 delivers low-light, journalistic shots with a 3D quality - and without a flash (getting ready, the reception).  The 85 delivers magical portraits that no zoom can match.  (The 1.8 and 1.2 are both incredible... I say start with the 1.8 ).  My poor 50 is neglected.

Hope that helps...

What look do you want? What kind of compression? Then what kind of f stop/bokeh?

Jasmine Star does a nice visual comparison between the 50 and the 35mm -
http://www.jasminestarblog.com/index.cfm?postID=990&review-canon-35mm-1-4

The 50mm 1.2 might get a bad rep on its focus because how many do adjustment, and also take into account what they want to focus on may not be what it sees as nearest thing to focus on.
At 1.2 - like the 85mm, the actual in focus depth is in the millimeters dependent on how far you're focusing out at. I'd imagine on a full frame like the 5D Mark II you could also use the EgS focusing screen to help

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: The 5D Mark III & SD Memory Cards
« on: June 25, 2012, 02:34:52 PM »
There's no need to actually remove the card. Just set the camera to auto-switch. You get full performance while it's using compact flash.

I know that's the theory, but have you tested this personally?  Thanks!

With both cards in, set to autoswitch, set to record to the CF card, I got >24 RAW pictures in a burst till it went to the slower frames per second speed. With just a CF card in the camera, there wasn't a difference.
Am I missing something?

Sounds like Jeff's talking about recording to both cards at the same time - which on p117 or so in the manual clearly states will "decrease greatly" the maximum burst.

The camera defaults to the slowest card - but only if you have that card select to record onto, or you're recording to both cards.

To be more accurate with the headline:

Why you can leave an SD card in your Canon 5D Mark III, but if you care about speed, don't record to it if you can, and be aware that recording to both cards simultaneously decreases greatly your maximum burst available

Having a SD card in the camera doesn't make it slower - selecting to use it does. I'd recommend having one in their as a fall back in case your CF card runs out of space. However - if you only have a CF card in there, there's no chance of having the issue (eg accidental setting change form autoswitch to rec separately/to multiple)

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon 1dx Got it! Got it! Got it!

Interested to hear what the 1DX's focusing abilities does to the focus speed and accuracy of the 85mm 1.2 !
(Plus, will many including OP be thinking of getting a focus screen (something lacking in the 5DMk III)?)

Given a few years, wouldn't most of the glass layers, look a little misaligned?

Lenses / Re: Faster cheapish prime for a wedding?

Anyone mentioned a rental house like Calumet? Depends where the OP is, but a rental gives chance to try the gear before hand, and not buy lots of things, and get some experience they can take with them -
Changing from a crop sensor to a full frame is a jump that you might want a bit of practise with.

Import Duty etc can be high. Might be worth asking some of the folks who bought via Digital Rev - it seems a steal, but they don't include Customs & Excise, VAT, handling charges etc.

The penalties for coming through customs not declaring could be high, wiping out any chance of profit (and flagging you on future trips). Also - for Canon - aren't the warranties region specific? I looked at Gibraltar import, but in the end the tax cost after declaring, and the issue of a non-Europe warranty ruled it out.

For the UK - Jessops and others like 1stcameras should be getting some around 22nd June roughly - the big sellers should be getting a date from Canon (who do a Next Day to the seller, so the seller can then know when they can ship to customers).

Does the focus assist work from the ex II 580 with the mark III?

Did you try central point only?

Site Information / Re: Shallow depth of feild.......... HOW ??
« on: March 29, 2012, 08:42:11 PM »
For the location?
Shooting into the sun but still wanting shallow depth of field would be one example. Or wanting the background a stop darker, or as the OP said - to fill in some shadows.

Overcoming the sun allows you to basically have control of the light and set be lighting to what you want, instead I the point source sunlight ruling the picture.

Another step is to wait for it to get darker! For a give. Flash/strobe power - there will be an upper limit as to what ambient background light you can overpower/modify
Eg if it's f4 at your settings for the background ambient and you want to have the background 1 stop darker,
You'd need enough Ws to have light at f 5.6.
Stacking up canon flashes to double up power - easily gets forge stage where it becomes worth looking at a higher power Einstein flash with portable battery pack.

Anyone got rough settings for what a EX II 580 could give out
Eg f4, 1/200 with x stops of ND wanting to knock te background down 1 stop?
