EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 5Diii pink picture problem
« on: March 25, 2012, 04:05:40 PM »
I also have a little problem, see attachment..

Didn't notice it on the LCD screen and it appeared when I zoomed in to a 100% in Adobe Bridge. After that it also appeared on the thumbnail in Bridge. I'm hoping this is just a PC / software issue and will be resolved with a new Camera Raw update?

Edit: No problems with the rest of the 500 shots I took. My CF card is only 4 GB and pretty old.
That's pretty much how some of my photos looked like when trying to import into Aperture/Lightroom 4.
No issues with jpegs from the MkIII, and no issues with RAWs from a MkII already on the card.
Guess we await a few fixes, and both LR and Aperture, Bridge to handle MkIII files

Shoot, store the RAWs, use jpegs. Frustrating, but LR4 is pretty new, hasn't even had a .x bug fix, and the MkIII isn't even reviewed much yet.

Will come soon enough - but i'd imagine definitely annoying for those who want to process images!

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Does f/4 work for 5DmkIII in low light?
« on: March 23, 2012, 06:34:24 PM »
Hello happy MK III owners, I'll be joining you soon among other happy folk :) I currently have the 24-105L, and I was thinking of buying 70-200 f/4 or f/2.8. However with ISO improvements in the latest 5D, I was windering if it's possible to get away with using f/4 and still getting workable images? Not taking bokeh and DoF into account?
Thank you in advance for your replies!

It was workable with the 5DMkII - and that's why it's a kit lens!
Go and try one - in the conditions you'll want to use them. The main improvement it seems is from 1600-128,000 - the 5DMkIII is an improvement on the MkII. They're pretty close at lower ISO. But you could just bump up the ISO a stop, and go for the f/4.

Your main issue might be the difference in focal points f2/8 vs f4 on the MkIII.

Any suggestions for UK folk with new kit?

600x Sandisk CF card definitely clearing the buffer faster than a 95MB/s Sandisk SDHC card once you're shooting in bursts

21
Don't forget also Mirror Locked up  shooting.

In person, it's an appreciably quieter sound for the silent shooting mode.

In shooting silent - near unlimitless shooting - the buffer doesn't really fill up.
In high speed normal shooting - you can rattle a dozen or so shots off.

Using a 600x CF card made a difference in comparison to a 95MB/s SDHC card - the high speed CF card does replenish the buffer faster - once the camera's hit buffering it'll let you take 1-2 more shots then pause and repeat quicker.

What's the EXIF data -
Lens, f stop used?

You've also got the issue of seeing the picture on a screen vs printed in one of his albums.

Well for one thing deleting files is going to fragment your memory card.

since when has "fragmenting" any significance for flash memory?

harddisk ok.. but SSD or FLASH memory should be unaffected by fragmenting.
that´s why you should disable defrag for SSD´s.
If a block is wiped, then you can just write to the block.
it isn't defragmented (eg all wiped to zeros) , the whole blckk has to be wrewritten not just the section you want to write the file too.

A 2 K write can cause a much larger section to be written for example. Imagine camera cards could be similar.

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Nikon D800 test samples - dpreview

Exactly how good the D800's image quality turns out to be is something that we're very keen to establish. On balance, increased pixel count generally counts as a good thing in everyday photography. The most important 'headline' benefits, all other things being equal, are that you get more detail in your images and greater scope for cropping. But there are potential downsides, too. The D3X, Nikon's current flagship, makes very high demands on lenses at 'only' 24MP and we wouldn't be surprised if some of the optics which D700 owners love so much don't shine quite so brightly at 100% on screen when bolted on front of a 36.3MP sensor...

70MB RAW files? Guess that eats up a few more memory cards (just like the 2x size change to capture the lens correction I'd imagine for Canon.

you have too keep in mind that internet forums are full of tech freaks.
they complain about everything...except their own lacking skills.

Ok, that's the real reason I'm getting a 1D X - then, I'll have nothing to complain about but my own lack of skill.   :P

In part why I enjoyed Jeff Ascough's review of the 5D Mark III (and pertinent to the 1DX too) :

So are there any negatives to owning this camera? Maybe just one. You will lose the ability to blame the camera for any shortcomings in your own photographic ability.

Maybe a public service announcement on the full release of both cameras?

EOS Bodies / Re: Disappointed in 2012 cameras, looking for suggestions

If you're willing to wait a year or two and do mostly low ISO work then you should keep an eye on second hand Medium Format kit - its slowly but surely dropping.
I'd say by the time the 5D Mark IV is getting ready for launch, MF will be a viable alternative for a fairly small increase in price for those who can step up and get the lenses also...

As for high MP it should be a lot clearer by Photokina, and any more updates in lenses as to where Canon might be going.
In the 5D section, I'd imagine that's it. It's 5D or 1DX for a while.

Lenses / Re: New prime lenses for wedding/events
« on: March 17, 2012, 01:37:14 PM »

And the 70-200 II is is great in the studio but its way to soft and inaccurate on 2.8 which I use outside in low light and in church. :/
Therefor I've looked at the 135/2.0 and the 85/1.2 for FF on the new 5D III to get the sharp creamy bookeh and sdof they can give me aswell as beeing sharp and accurate. :)
Or am I thinking wrong here?

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-70-200mm-f-2.8-L-IS-II-USM-Lens-Review.aspx

Should be sharp even at 2.8.
Can make the f stop smaller and still have the added bonus of the focusing with f2.8

Would have a narrow depth of field and depth of in focus area though.

I think it's been mentioned that the f stop is only one factor for depth of field, the distance to subject and distance to background also play a part.

Different parts of a wedding do seem to suit different primes - 85,135 for reach, wide angles 25,35, 50 for closer to subject and wide angle shots.
I guess a 24-70 or a 24-105 would e the nearest unobtrusive 1 zoom lens to cover most of the shots.
I guess personal preference, personal style (how close you like to be with subjects for example)  really does weigh into lens choice for weddings and event photography.

Majority or wedding pictures aren't usually shot at 24mm or below. Scene setting perhaps?
Is it fair to say the 24mm or a wider angle lens is more niche, like a macro for detail shots?

If you could rent you could try the ones you mention?
Is it out of left field to try the kit 24-105mm if you're going 5DM3? Could easily sell it on (an the kits are being sold before the body only 5DMkIII at the moment it seems)

What focal length do you prefer at the moment and what style / focal length do you want to get into?

Eg a 135 is a less conspicuous prime lens for speeches than a 75-200, with an 85 as a hotter focal length alternative.
A 50mm and below can give PJ shots.
The 85 1.2 and 100 macro would give great general portrait shots (and the 135 too I'd imagine?)

The 85mm 1.8 and 50 1.4 are great value lenses to try the focal length with their L counterparts renowned.
