EOS Bodies / Re: 46.1mp Canon DSLR Previewed at PhotoPlus 2012? [CR1]
« on: November 09, 2012, 06:28:49 PM »
It is quiet about more rumors, any one heard anything about a high resolution Canon camera?

Alas it would seem our hope to have something announced this year are gone  :-[

Looks like we will have to be patient...

EOS Bodies / Re: [Poll] Canon Reign Supreme Again?
« on: November 06, 2012, 07:07:19 AM »
Wow lots of really interesting and passionate comments on this thread so far.  My personal take on the original post question is that neither Canon nor Nikon "reign" supreme.  Both company have raised the bar and we should all be happy about this.  Yes on paper Nikon does have better sensor, but Canon has better AF system and better lens.  Metering is very different with both system and so does color rendition.  Shooting with both system myself, tech charts do not take pictures.  I think it is Neuro who keeps reminding us of that:  a camera is more than chart and more then a sensor.  You need to look at the system.

I do find satisfaction is shooting both system depending on the settings.  If it was so simple and only about a technical chart, I would have sold one of the two system long ago (based on spec alone).  But guess what, some of my best ISO 100 shots portrait are not with my D800 but with my 1DX!!!  Why?  Well maybe it is because there is not equivalent 85 1.2L or 50 1.2L with Nikon, skin colors also seem more true with the 1DX.  Maybe it is because the AF system of the 1DX is so fast that I dont miss the moment...My point is I dont really care because it just works...

I hope Nikon and Canon keeps pushing each other to bring better and better camera system.  Yes I do wish Canon sensor would be better, but I still hope the next high MP camera from Canon will address that...crossing my finger...

Well I for one am really happy about the f4 IS zoom.  It will make for a nice walk around zoom lens and I already pre-ordered one...I wish the price would be less though..

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Nikon Sales Rising

and nikon has produced the more exciting cameras this year.
at least in my pricerange of 2000-3000 euro.

Even there, I'd take a 5DIII over a D800 for general use.  I'm sure I'd find the D800 exciting if my primary subjects were landscape and architecture, but they're not.

+1!  I am learning this the hard way.  I love the D800 for shooting outside and shooting still scenary like landscape, but trying to shoot a moving subject even outside or shooting indoor with a flash sometime is a hit and miss game with the AF on the D800.  It is also very sensitive to lenses selection.  In low light prime lenses are almost impossible to focus with the D800...

As a result (and to my surprise to some degree) my go to Camera for shooting ISO 100 with a flsh inside is actually my ... 1DX!

Well, I am down for the  EF 24-70 f/4L IS even though I just got the 24-70 II.  I love the smaller and lighter package and IS for outside shooting.  As for the 35mmf2 IS, well I will wait for the 35 1.4L II version if it ever come out.  All the new IS prime (24, 28 and now 35) are really good but they still lack the contrast and color of the "L" series lenses...

Now CR guy, where is that high MP Canon camera so I can get rid of my D800 that barely focus in low light :-)!

Pricewatch Deals / Re: Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L II Now in Stock at B&H
« on: October 19, 2012, 05:17:09 PM »
I just ordered one (I was waiting for this one to be back in stock) and they allowed me to ship to Canada.  Maybe the restriction is only of camera body...or not in full effect yet.  Either way I am happy I could get it.

Cool!   This is great news!  I almost bought the 1.4x III extender earlier this week because I was afraid the 2x extender would not work with some lenses on my 1DX.  Now the choice is simple!  I will get a 2x extender.

Using the 1.4x will yield better optical quality than the 2x, and also with an f/4 lens and the 1.4x you have 21 cross-type AF points and 40 more single-line points, whereas with an f/4 lens and the 2x you have 1 cross type and 4 single-line points.

So, budget permitting, having both makes sense to me.

Good point Neuro.  Thanks for the suggestion.  I have always been afraid to get extender because of what it could do to the image quality.  I forgot about the number of AF point available...Maybe I will start with the 1.4 anyway afterall.  If I dont like the resulting quality then for sure I would not like the effect on the 2x extender!

I can see the difference on the TDP ISO chart section but in real life situation, do you find the 1.4x III extender really degrade your image?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Canon EOS-1D X DXOMark Sensor Scores
« on: October 13, 2012, 02:19:33 PM »
I mentioned this before, but perhaps it was lost in other conversation. My guess is that the 12.8 stops of DR for the 1D X is the "Print DR". It doesn't matter the camera, Canon, Nikon, or anyone else...I think that the Print DR figure is exceptionally misleading and falsely indicative of a sensor's capabilities. My guess is that the 1D X still only has 11.something stops of DR, like all the rest of Canon's cameras.

I would tend to agree there.  Having both the 1DX and the D4 (and I guess the D800), the only number in those DxO "rumored" scores that surprised me was the 12.8 DR.  Overall I do think the 1DX is a superior camera then the D4, however I still find from real life shooting that my D4 gives me more dynamic range when I shoot outside and I dont find the difference marginal either...

One of the biggest difference between both camera also seems to be metering which could explain in part my perceived preference for one camera over the other in certain shooting condition...

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon 5D3 vs. Nikon D600
« on: September 29, 2012, 08:08:33 AM »
Why is this surprising? Seems to me if you want low iso dr you go Nikon, if you want high iso performance you go canon.

I would tend to agree with your statement regarding the D800 for example, which i find unusable above ISO 1600 personally.  However, in terms of high ISO, the Nikon D4 is on par or slightly better then the 1DX.

Incidently, i find focus so slow on my D800 that when shooting at iso 100 indoors with a flash, i prefers the 1DX.  With the right lens it provides amazing result.  I did not expect that...off topic here but thought i would share...

Well, I am drooling with this potential new camera.  If the DR is anything close to the promise, I would gladely sell back my D800.  I know many will complain that 46MP is not required for their work, but if this is the price to pay to get industry leading DR, sign me up!

 :P :P :P

... For example, I haven't heard very many wedding/event  togs wishing  for lower fps, worse AF, or higher MP, and I don't hear many complaints about the 5D3's IQ (including DR)  at ISO 3200

yeah not at ISO3200 at ISO3200 it has very good DR (only 1DX and D4 and D3s are better and the D3s is so much lower res it doesn't really count) it's at ISO100-200 or 400 where the DR is bad. The high iso DR on the 5D3 is better than any camera other than the 1DX and D4 basically.

+1.  Unfortunately shooting outside at ISO 100 even with the 1DX which I feel has the best Canon sensor, the Nikon D4 beats it if the scene has brights spots and shadows...  (I did not mention the D800 because that is not really a comparable camera but still...Canon is way behind here)...

Lots of interesting comment in this thread.  While I am not sure I would push it to a CEO stepping down, I am very disappointed with Canon strategy to strip down features in lower model like AF for example.  I much prefer Nikon approach as a consumer to offer as much as possible to each product.  I simply refuse to believe we need to pay $3k to get a decent Canon AF system now a days...

The second disappointment for me is the lack of improvements in their CMOS sensor compared to the competition (DR range for example, ability to pull and push shadows and highlights).   I have both Canon and Nikon gears, and when shooting in the sun outside, I am always frustrated at how Canon lack some DR for these typw of high contrast lighting settings.

That said, I think Canon is still king of the hilkl when it comes to lenses and their 61 pts AF system, but we need more then that now...
