I wonder when it'll become official not an RC.
I will probably go ahead and download it though :)
Hopefully this wont add to the level of confusion if the RC is buggy for some reason!

EOS Bodies / Re: This web site is making me question why I lurk here
« on: March 29, 2012, 04:18:55 PM »
I find early adopters without the proper risk taking temperament are the root cause of most the problems here.
I must admit this one is very true of me. I am not keen on being an early adopter. Knowing how anticipated the 5d3 was by so many I preordered to make sure I got one before the summer when I am going on a great trip that I really want to be upgraded in time for. I didnt want to be looking at the shots from that trip later this year, the duds and even the better shots wishing that I'd gotten my 5d3 in time.

I have learned early adoption is not for me. Too stressful with too many added variables. Youve just spent a lot of money on this new piece of kit that you want use for years to come and find that your first few shots are not sharp. Is it you, is the new kit lens, is the camera? You dont want to just slam out shot after shot to get used to the camera because you need to take under 200 shots to return it.

Some of the hysteria, that I admit to having partaken in when I should have known better, is seeded in the issue with people who dont usually use DPP having to use it because their usual software for organising images (Lightroom or Aperture) cant read the files. This combined with the fact the jpgs are a bit weird looking to a lot of people because of the amount of NR turns peoples attention to the camera.

Once the issue with DPP was highlighted and people were able to use ACR 6.7 to get atbthe RAW files the issue is resolved but the damage is done...

The seeds of doubt were sown with a lot of people... Its hard to shake that first impression even though it turns out the camera was not at fault.

What I find most interesting is the crappy quality of 90% of the photos that  these anxious  obsessives have posted here to get feedback. I'm talking about crappy composition, worthless lighting, impossible focusing situations, horrible white balance and basically most norms of decent photography violated in the service of complaining, worrying or hand wringing.
Are you one of the people who downloaded the rather dull and uninteresting RAW files I posted yesterday of a house? If so, I apologise.

I wasnt going anywhere interesting to actually take good shots but I knew people were asking about RAW shots of outdoor scenes so I hastily posted a few of my own "crappy composition, worthless lighting" test shots so anybody interested in looking at 5d3 RAW files could. Again I should have know better. I deleted the post a few hours later.

I find a lot of the problems with scenic images most people post on the web to say "look at this stunning shot with camera x" are pointless, they are just showing the photographers composition skills and a pretty scene he took his new camera to. When you reduce the full image to 800 pix wide you arent showing the capability of the camera at all. A shot with many cell phone held steadily at the same scene would look great reduced that small.

I wonder what the reception would have been if it was priced $1,000 cheaper?
I think the 5d3 would have got a better reception from a lot of people if it was cheaper. When the price comes in at more than you expected you expect to get more than you expected.

For many people it seems the much awaited 5d3 being an much improved 5d2 not a revolutionary camera was a disappointment enough. The increased price didnt help them with that feeling at all.

This is the first post youve made with any feedback about your 5d3 isnt it?

Do you have any sort of post, hands on or review in the works?

I thought I'd replied to this... but I guess not  ???

I saw a link to a good method for doing the micro auto focus adjusting that uses the EOS usb controlling software somewhere else on this forum yesterday. I just need to wait for my new tripod head to arrive later today before I can get started with it. :)

I could be wrong but I think they are in a first come first serve basis. In some trips, they turned around my CPS repair on the same day and others I had to wait 3 days while standard turnaround is 6-7 days or so. Feel free to give them a call but you may have to wait in line based on prior orders received.

Thanks, If I decide to do it I'll give them and call and check out what they have to say on their time frames before I drive down there. Given the 5d3 is newly released I'm guessing they are going to be busy.

Which location did you go to? Or did you ship your gear to them?

I've just seen a link to a simpler looking procedure for trying the Micro Adjustment process on the post below... I'll probably give that a try before I go and spend somebody at Canons time on it... :)

if you go to a canon repair center, they can calibrate the W and T separately for older models.

on my 5D3, the 24-70 and 70-200 2.8L II focus pretty much dead on all the time, no need to calibrate, i can only tell you that this function is there if you need it. however my 50 1.4 is +8 to +15 depending on the light source and aperture.

I asked here  --> http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php/topic,4889.0.html ealier about Canon Repair Centers. Do you know whether they will do the work while you wait if you walk-in? Or is it a drop off and we'll call you in a few weeks when its done?

I have a new 5d3 and I think a few of my lenses have varying degrees of mainly foreward focusing issues... the new kit lens seems particularly bad. Its my first full frame so rather than trying to do it and corrections myself I thought it would be good if I could call into the Canon places thats an hours drive away and get them to look at my lens camera combos for me...

Great photo!

There's just one thing that bothers me and it's that not both eyes are in focus. That's the thing I find most distracting but other than that, I love everything else about it. :)

Actually there are 2 eyes in focus I think... the mushroom on his hat has one eye in focus too :)

Great shot, I love the shallow DOF with only one eye (on the guy :) ) in focus.

Its great that even with just one eye on the plane of focus you also managed to get the nose ring mostly in focus too... was that planned or a happy accident?

Excellent image loads of character to it.

I think everyone agrees that the 5DIII is a better camera in areas OTHER than image quality, Autofocus, frame rate, extra memory card, viewfinder, silent mode, etc.

:) Kind of an important area for a pro camera to be good in though :)

I wonder if we will see any proper reviews until this issue with the RAW processing is sorted out. If I was putting my reputation on the line with a review of as awaited a new camera as this I'd want to make sure I knew the images were processed properly before I released my review.

Canon General / Canon Service Centers and Lens/Focus Cailbration
« on: March 26, 2012, 12:16:27 PM »
Does anybody what services the Canon Factory Service Centers offer with regards to either auto focus micro adjustments or full on lens camera calibration? and if they charge?

There is one reasonably nearby (about an hours drive away). I dont like the idea of shipping my camera off to be adjusted but if they do any of this on a walk-in, wait and walk-out basis then it seems like a good option for peace of mind.

Having just got my 5d3 kit I want to make sure I am getting the best out of it and my other L lenses. Especially as at the moment I am a lot happier with the focus on the shots I have been getting with my 70-300L and 50 f/1.8 than I am with the new kit lens.

I think the 24-105L may be front focusing, in one shot the tiny hairs on the tip of my daughters nose and really sharp and from there back the shot looks a little oof. Its my first FF camera and with my trusted old t2i I have never had any issues like this to base much on... I know the auto focus adjusting stiff is there on the 5d3 but If the service center do walk ins I'd rather get someone who know what they are doing to have a look at it for me.

I'd rather get myself adjusted to the new camera knowing it was all correct and any problems were with me than spend time trying to work out the problem is me or the lens :)

Presuming that the entrey level ff is not going to be a mega pixel monster I'd say it is unlikly we'll see Canon releasing a high MP direct D800 competitor this year.

With the 1dx, 5d3, the 4k dslr and the entry level dslr surely they wont also put out a $3k price range full frame MP monster this year as well?

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Defective 5D MK III.....

Photoshop CS6 Public Beta wont open the 5d3 cr2's either but the release candidate for Adobe Camera Raw 6.7 opens them and doesnt seem to display the issues that DPP is showing.

Hopefully Adobe will get the LR 4 update that includes 5d3 cr2's released soon.

For those of you who can't see what the issue is, here it is:

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-III-DSLR-Camera-Review.aspx

After the soft samples and the fact that they hadnt got Adobe ready for the 5d3 with Lightroom 4 even though the 1dx, d4 and d800 all have their raws openable in LR4. Those and a few other things made me wonder if the 5d3 release was a rush job for some reason... but not even having your OWN software ready...seriously...

I'm trying not to be too critical or judgemental after all I have spent $4400 on a 5d3 myself and it arrived this afternoon... After waiting what felt like forever for the battery to charge I took a few shots with it opened them up in DPP (which I dont normally use... I'm a Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom guy) and just wasnt happy with the quality, everything looked not quite in focus and kind of blotchy.

I was thinking either my copy of the camera had some issue/defect or I was just using it wrong in some unknown way, its my first full frame camera and I was in a hurry doing the test shots because we were about to leave to take the kids to a birthday party this evening at an indoor inflatables play place. When I knew the camera was coming today I thought it was going to be a great place to test it out with low light but after seeing how crap my first shots with it were I left it at home instead. Thinking either me or the camera were defective so itook my 550d instead. Having read the Digital Picture posts hopefully my issues were all down to the fact Canons own software cant display their own images properly? Come on guys... I'm trying not to get judgemental but as I said earlier... seriously? Not only have you sold me several thousand dollars worth of camera without having the worlds largest third party software manafacturer ready for it... but your own software wont work either? So I have paid all this money for a camera and at the moment I cant even use RAWs? I can only edit the over NR'd jpgs?

I'll take a look at the CS6 beta tomorrow with the raws... hopefully that will work with them... but will it work properly? Who knows? Speding this much money on a camera and not even knowing it works properly makes me feel kinda sick....

Just think out loud.....
They have to be watching the Nikon US legal department as they try to figure out a way to rise the prices in the US. They probably won't be able to affect per-orders prices only halt delivery at the end of the month and then reprice.

If they do so, Canon will mostly like figure out a way to make the prices match without reduce the actual camera price say a $200 credit toward any L lens costing $1500 or more.

Given all the thousands of dollars in lenses you use to take advantage of your pro level dslr a few hundred bucks between the canon and nikon body prices shouldn't really be factoring into a choice between a 5d3 and a d800... IMHO anyways :-)
