EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: The 5D Mark III Fix
« on: May 04, 2012, 06:08:58 PM »
Despite any quality control issues with the D800, it still poses a MASSIVE problem for Canon. Even if Canon could produce a profitable sensor with DR, resolution and ISO performance comparable to the D800 (and that seems a big if), how could they sell it at a competitive price without blitzing the sales of the already-more-expensive 5D mk III? I've been a lifelong Canon fan, and would still buy a 5D mk III, but for customers with little or no prior brand loyalty...

Canon's marketing AND tech departments must be sweating bullets, unless something big is on the way. This reminds me of the ever-raging war between video card manufacturers AMD and Nvidia. Sometimes when one company starts lagging behind, it's a sign that they're working on something really revolutionary.

For those wishing for a 19-point AF module - dream on.  Not gonna happen.

You may be right, but I wouldn't be so sure. I think retaining the 9-point system in it's current form would be a bad move on Canon's behalf. It probably doesn't even cost that much extra to produce the 19-point AF module. As for stealing 7D sales, I wouldn't be at all shocked to see the 7D mk II pick up either the 61-point system of the 5D mk III (and a few dollars on the price tag) or a totally new 40-50ish point system since it is squarely aimed at sports shooters.

On the other hand, where does all this leave the 60D?

I think APS-H is unlikely for the "3D". I would sooner say 30ish megapixels in a 5D III body. I was impressed with Canon's decision to make the 1DX only 18 MP but they do need a high megapixel camera as well.

I would say a professional body tbh, studio work requires a lot of portrait orientation use, with out having to pay for a grip, and personally I don't think there will be a 3d, maybe a studio committed 1dxs (or some ridiculous name like that) with a high 27-31 MP count.

Whatever they call it, I think such a camera is very likely. As for the form factor, it's hard to say. A pro body would be more expensive to produce so I would say better to sell it at a lower price and have a high-quality battery grip as an option for those who need it.

Do you think that this "light leak" is an issue???

This might make me a bad person, but as a Canon fan, that thread makes me happy in all kinds of ways.

Having said that, a 30 megapixel FF camera would be reasonable for studio and landscape shooting because there's a lot more breathing room on the FF sensors as far as DLA and pixel size goes.

I agree 100%. 18 Megapixels is already pushing the limits of DLA and lens sharpness on a crop camera. Much better to stick with 16-18mp and boost the DR and ISO capability. 16 MP APS-C with Digic V and gapless microlenses would be a very tasty proposition for me (If I hadn't decided that my next camera will be FF). Canon's choice to make the 1Dx an 18 MP camera was very exciting to me and I hope they back down from the megapixel wars on other camera lines as well.

The ergonomics of the 7D and 5D III bodies are very nice. Any new FF camera would quite likely just use exactly the same shell as the 5D III with different internals. This would also help keep production costs down.

How would you feel if you bought a Lexus with a headlight issue and they fixed it with tape and assured you that you it is as good as new and will never give you a problem? Most would say that as long as Lexus would honor any problems then they would be good with it, but you also would drive around every single day thinking about that stupid tape.

If the headlight issue had anything to do with the wiring, I think tape would be a perfectly acceptable fix. :D

Don't come on here and try to convince us mere mortals that this is sufficient and 'don't open your computers' because there is tape all inside it.  You know what?  I have opened my computer...I build my own computers and THERE ISN'T A STITCH OF TAPE ANYWHERE INSIDE IT.  Not one small piece.

The reason why there's no tape in your computer is because a desktop computer is a modular system designed to be put together with interchangable plug-and-play parts. I've taken apart laptops and found (the horror!) tape inside, because these are designed to be compact and lightweight, sometimes using soldered or integrated connections in locations where a desktop tower would instead use a user-friendly but more bulky multi-pin connector.

The 5D mk III is meant to be a sealed unit with no parts interchangeability, so the circuitry and wiring is assembled a little differently, including the use of tape.

Edit: Ya, you're 100% right about the "ignorance is bliss" factor. After I calculated how much strain is put on the pistons and rods of a car engine, I spent weeks expecting to see a piston come flying through the hood as I drove along.

I just couldn't handle the 5D II's AF system after using the more advanced features of the 7D's 19-point system for the last 2+ years. That's also the one reason I bought 7D instead of 60D.

Get hold of a 5DIII or a 1D4 and you will wonder how you managed with the 7D's poor AF then ...

Yeah, too true. I think a 5D mk III may enter my life in the near future... But I'll wait just a month or two and see what happens next in the camera world.

You might also run into other consequences...such as images that look fairly soft @ 1:1 crop at apertures outside of that narrow band of maximum system spatial resolution (this is part of the problem the 7D with its 18mp sensor has...its 116lp/mm spatial resolution is only viable at a relatively narrow band of apertures around maybe f/3.5 to f/6.

So true. I shoot landscape with a 7D and spend most of my time at f/7.1 for that very reason.

im sure nikon, sony, olympus and some other big medium brands are having a big laugh at this....

cr guy says: If the fix works, who cares how they did it.
yeah but for how long? people are giving away a lot of money for this camera.. we are in times of technology that shouldn't have this kind of failures..!!

just my 2 pence

Well let's see... open up any camera you want and you'll probably find tape holding together a bunch of wires or covering a circuit board. It's just standard practice. So what do you expect to see inside the 5D mk III? The interior of Westminster Abbey?

Yes, we ARE in times of advanced technology. You're 100% right about that. But with more complexity comes the potential for more errors, and as errors go, this "light leak" is quite insignificant.

wow - I have no words to describe this... so this is what a $3500 camera looks like?

Or a $7000 camera for that matter. Or an airplane. Black tape and circuitry are best friends.
