I wish I was in a graveyard spiral just like Canon.   :D

Lenses / Re: Should I get 1.4x III or 2.0xIII extender - please help.
« on: November 11, 2012, 10:53:03 AM »
I can't speak to the performance with the 300 Ver. 2 but I have and regularly use both the 1.4xTC III and the 2xTC III with my 300 f/2.8L IS (Ver. 1) and my observations are as follows...

I know that Canon says the 1.4 will slow AF by 50% but to be perfectly honest, I hardly notice any slowing of the AF with that combination.  However with the 2x the AF is significantly slower unless I am pre-focused pretty close to where I need to be.

As for IQ, it only takes a very small hit with the 1.4 and I have no problem shooting wide open.  However, to get what I feel is acceptable IQ with the 2x, I have to stop the combination down to at least f/8.  Wide open, I definitely see a noticeable hit in IQ.

Perhaps Caroline needs to get her Sh** together and realize that things in life are not just about her.  Perhaps she should also be reminded that this is a forum she has access to that costs her nothing.  If she feels that having the mods screen topics is reason to leave the forum, I suggest that someone hold the door for her.

I'm sure that other members of this forum appreciate the work the mods do in keeping things running and free of spam.  I'm a mod on another forum and have been for 6 years.  In recent years spam has become a real problem.  We are bombarded with it and it's a never ending job to keep up.

I for one congratulate and thank the people that operate this forum.  Keep up the great work.

Lenses / Re: What price to pay for a used 500mm F4?
« on: October 18, 2012, 03:42:27 PM »
This lens currently sells used in the area of $6,000, plus or minus a couple of hundred.

I would be very suspicious at $2,500.  This deal look much too good to be true.  Be very, very careful.

Has Canon really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like about the new sensors yet?

Well, I think Canon really has been far even as didn't decide not to use even go want not to do look still more like about the new sensor.

Well if they don't have it do, why are they stop making rumors and not release any worthwile information about what is to has been released yesterday by Nikon?

Without a doubt, this is the most informative thread of the day.  :o

Certainly the most entertaining.   ::)

EOS Bodies / Re: "Canon EOS 6D For Dummies"

will be a bestseller.. because only dummies will buy the 6D...   ;D

Only a dummy would make that kind of a comment.  Only a dummy would criticize a product before anyone has had their hands on it and had a chance to see how it performs.

Okay, hopefully that's my last rant for today.   :)

1 dead pixel out of 24,300,000.....  how awful.  I wonder when the last time was that someone looked at a picture and saw a dead pixel.

Don't sweat it.  Dead pixels are common.

Aden Camera in Toronto has had the 5D2 on for at least a week now at $1799.

I read most posts on this forum and have done so for a long, long time.  I don't very often offer a comment, but I think this time I will.

Whenever I read a post such as this that is put up by someone who thinks they are smarter than the folks at Canon, I cringe.  I wonder how many of these self proclaimed experts actually have marketing background.  Or any marketing knowledge of any kind.  I would guess somewhere between zero and none.

When the folks at Canon introduce a new product, I can assure you that they have done extensive market research and have matched the product to the market segment they want to address.  Some of us may not be the target market for the current new product release.  The fact that so many of use have an extensive collection of Canon products indicates that they hit the mark when they brought out the products for which we were targeted.

Frankly, in my opinion, Canon's CEO should get a nice bonus.  And so should his marketing director.

Okay..... that's enough of a rant for today.

That's a very nice shot indeed briansquibb! Overall I'm happy with the lens, your advice was one of those which convinced me in the end :-)

Yeah Act, I agree that the main thing here is the f/5.6 at 300mm, and it's quite capable of delivering great results though. I'm sad to hear that 70-200 f/2.8 II is a pain to carry around though - I was looking forward to maybe getting it sometime in the future, but since it's impossible to walk all day with it... Then it appears like I've just saved myself some $2500 worth of equipment :-)

Have you tried a Black Rapid hsrness - it makes carrying a lot easier than with the strap

For the record, I'm 70 years old, have two arthritic knees and one arthritic shoulder.  I carry a 70-200 2.8L IS II on a 1D Mk IV around a motocross track most of the day without a problem.  If it gets to feeling a little heavy around my neck, I hang it on my shoulder for a while.

The lens delivers spectacular results and rivals my 300 2.8L IS in image quality.

.....just saying.   :)

No, I haven't, but perhaps I should.  70 year olds are slow to change how they have done stuff all these years.  :)

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 5D II/24-70L II OR 5D III/24-70L
« on: May 17, 2012, 02:24:51 PM »
A sharp lens is only good if your body nails focus. If you do any shooting in fading or low light, or sports or other moving subjects, the 5D3 combo hands down. If you're shooting with strobes in a studio or landscapes on a tripod then clearly the 5D2 combo is king.  The fact is no one can give you any kind of worthwhile advice without knowing what, where, and when you shoot.

Don't necessarily limit yourself to f2.8 glass either. The 24-105 f4 can be a killer piece of glass with 3 stops of IS and when combined with a 5D3 body.... about 4 stops higher ISO (that translates into a LOT of action stopping shutter speed) compared to what you're use to.

The IS has absolutely no benefit for subject movement.  It only helps to correct camera movement allowing one to shoot at lower shutter speeds.  It provides no 'action stopping' advantage.  The camera itself does not provide 4 stops improvement in high ISO performance over the MkII.

EOS Bodies / Re: Brand New 5d3 with 1500 shutter counts.

Have you checked the file number of your last image to confirm the count is the same as eoscount says it is?

Their website does not show that it supports the 5DIII (although the site might not be updated to include that body).
