Lenses / Re: 2013 - The Year for 400mm Lenses? [CR1]
« on: December 16, 2012, 11:18:31 AM »
I went quickly over internet and I couldn't find any 400mm f4 lens except DO model from canon.
Is it not strange that this focal length is abandoned (400mm F4 prime models) for lower budget photographers
Definitely 400mm f5.6 IS or 400mm f4 non DO would be most welcome :)

See quote from digital picture. The most interesting part for me is that AF is working at f8 on 5D Mark II body with  Kenko on 400mm 5.6 L lens :)

Autofocusing at f/8 with Select Third-Party Extenders
 Thursday, September 13, 2012
Many people were unhappy that the Canon EOS 1D X could not auotofocus at maximum apertures of f/8 like previous 1-series bodies. We received a few reports that the Canon EOS 1D X can autofocus at f/8 using the Kenko Teleplus PRO 300 DGX 1.4x AF Teleconverter (Aurthur Morris posted on the subject recently) and we decided to run a few small tests to confirm.

We tested a "blue dot" (current) version of the 1.4x Kenko Extender with the Canon EF 400mm f/5.6 L USM Lens using center focus and various camera bodies focused on static subjects. Here are our subjective results:

Autofocus Performance

Canon EOS 1D X: AF worked and was fast with almost no hunting. However, metering was consistently off by +1 stop.
Canon EOS 5D Mark III: AF worked and was fast with almost no hunting. Metering worked as expected.
Canon EOS 5D Mark II: AF worked and was reasonably fast with a little hunting. Metering worked as expected.
Canon EOS 7D: AF worked, but the camera had a hard time locking focus. Metering worked as expected.
Canon EOS Rebel T4i / 650D: AF worked with a little hunting. Metering worked as expected.
Please note that we did not test with moving subjects and did not test image quality; results may vary depending on your situation. Other third-party extenders may work similarly.

Update: The EOS 1D X was originally tested with version 1.0.2 firmware. I updated the firmware version 1.0.6 and retested. Performance remains as reported above. Also interesting is that all 1D X focus points remain active (though periphery AF point use results in more hunting).

See link below It is not neck strap but definitely will decrease the load from your neck. I'm using it and it is best thing I bought for carrying Pro body with heavy lens. It is expensive but worth it.

EOS Bodies / DSLR working... in extreme temperature/humidity
« on: July 04, 2012, 12:42:57 PM »
I went for a trip with my wife to one of the UAE islands last weekend. Summer is here and temperature can reach already 47-49 degrees Celsius and humidity on coastal area can reach 85-90%. On one day early morning 6;30AM  we took   1.5h "safari trip to see animals which run freely on the Island. My camera 5D Mark gave up towards the end of that short trip. I took maybe 150 shots. I was not able to change any AF point. I had to switch off camera for few minutes to restore functionality. My wife had 30D an there was no problem with it at all. She took less pictures than me and maybe this  had some thing to do with it,. Morning temperature was around 40 degrees which is within operating range of 5D MK II.
ON second day we took walk for 5k starting from 5PM.  Temperature was way above 40. I took maybe 20-30 pics and my wife similar amount.  Situation got reversed my 5d worked without any problem and 30D completely gave up. Not responsive unless switched off for few minutes.
Does anyone had similar experience maybe in Middle East or Africa or anywhere with temp. above 40 degrees Celsius? Different bodies?
How the weather sealing influence heat/cold/humidity resistance?

EOS Bodies / Re: Cost of 5DMk3 internationally
« on: May 03, 2012, 12:16:57 PM »
I live in United Arab Emirates and here 5D Mark III cost 14999AED which is around 4075USD. I did not see the kit but it might cost around 20000AED which is  5181USD
I'd like to say for those who do not live here that there is no Taxes at all......
Of course tax is hidden in customs or other "things" but this is another story.
Comparing US market prices to others I  say that US Market is specific and huge and big players like BH Photo, Amazon etc. can push the prices down more than Canon Products in country of origin.
Try look at other products not necessarily electronics and compare prices
IN UAE if I wish to order Canon 5D mark II from BH Photo I will PAY 3499$+shipment less than 100$ plus customs around 150$= 3749$=13796AED approximately. Still cheaper than in country which doesn't have TAXES at all  ......   :)
