Lenses / Re: Selling my two Zeiss lenses. Your advice?
« on: July 28, 2014, 04:05:10 PM »
Don't have the Zeiss 35mm f1.4 neither the new canon 16-35 F/4,  but I was not happy with the 16-35 f2.8, and I am keeping my canon 35mm f1.4, because the AF is a big plus for me at this focal range.

So, from the 3 lenses you have, I would only sell the 35mm - no way I will sell either my 15 and 135 copies. Maybe in 10 years or longer, canon will make a better 15mm (or 14) and 135mm but, I bet the Z's will still focus and work fine then... and there is a good chance the canon usm motors burned out already :)

If you not using either one so much, then maybe it's time to try new a new focal length, or if indeed you switch often between the 15 and 35, a zoom as good as others claim - the 16-35 f4 - will be more usefull for you.

In sum, check back on which focals you are using the most in your shots; that will tell you the need to keep the lens or not
- a lot of valid points already given to you, and if you don't see the IQ difference, then by all means sell them all

Thanks for all your replies

I am going to wait for the Tamron to become available as a rental - seems that will be in October.
Then I will test it along with the 400 5.6
Getting the 70-200mk2 with a 2x extender might be an option to consider IF I can get one during a Canon's refurbished event

Lenses / Re: Which Bokeh Monster?
« on: July 24, 2014, 10:56:37 AM »
If indeed you getting a FF body, then I would suggest taking a look at other "bokeh monsters" out there:

look at these guys work:

Aside the MOG trioplan 100 2.8, there is also the Orestor 135mm and the Helios 442-2 85mm
search for pics on flickR and other sites - they will deliver quite an unique bokeh and overall look
worth to give them a try because they are cheap in fair condition, but are all manual, and you will need an adapter with a focus-confirm chip

Lenses / Re: What would a 16mm or 18mm F2 FF lens look like?
« on: July 22, 2014, 03:13:55 PM »
FYI:
http://www.thephoblographer.com/2013/10/12/the-top-five-most-extreme-wide-angle-lenses-ever-built/

2.8 is fast enough for UWA - no point having a f/1.4 with tons of CA, coma effect and others, that would only be mild to tolerable above f/4..... sharp f3.5 with high iso is better than f2.0 images a lower iso I suppose.
I really don't  know - maybe it's design/optical law restriction., and only can imagine either with huge front element (>95mm)

..thanks, I get the point
I am borderline a lens horder LOL - well, not really, but have a hard time getting rid of any, but I have to keep my imposed limit of 20. Hence the issue - one has to go in order to give romm to a new one at this time.
I know the Ts-e is a great lens, and the 18 has been just mounted on my IR camera.
Do I need 400 or even 600mm reach? It would open new fields and shooting opportunities, as I have other T&S lenses, along with plenty of UWA and WA
Seen many people selling a given lens, and having to re-buy it not too long after, but lately, I have read many posts of people disapointed with either sigma or Tamron teles.
So, could I sneak on more lens, without selling other? Sure,  considering what they(lenses) are able/capable of provide, I am really debating if I should make this an exception regarding acquiring a new tele

Lenses / another...would you?
« on: July 10, 2014, 12:50:54 PM »
Hi,
currently I don't have any lens reaching above 200mm (unless I use a non-canon 2x converter on the MDP). I have been considering the Sigma 150-500mm or even the Tamron 150-600mm
To fund either purchase, either the Ts-e 90mm (choice #1 to sell) or the Zeiss T18mm will be sacrificed  :'( as much as I like both, the truth is they don't see much use lately.
I like the sigma option more, as it' available right now, great price, and I would say better buit quality compared with Tamron.
So, would you do it?
...just trying to get some feedack and opinions to make my mind once for all.
Thanks
Phil

Lenses / Re: Interesting piece of glass - f/0.85

a quick search about names involved shows that the German counterpart (IB/E Optics:Offers optical design and engineering for customized solutions in machine vision applications and produces HD video systems. Supplies MTF, distortion and telecentricity measurement equipment. Products include macro-optics, telecentric optics and molded optics." seems legit, in existence since 1992, and mostly dedicated to industrial optical applications/products. In the other hand, the manufacturer (Shanghai Transvision Photographic Equipment: Company Profile :Shanghai Transvision Photographic Equipment Co.,Ltd was founded in 2007. With years of technical experience in optical image industry, we have established our own brand KIPON and have developed image adapter line with the highest quantity and the most completed models in the world, including Single Lens Reflex camera adapters, mirrorless adapters, shift adapters, tilt adapters and so on."

If they were producing that in Germany or Japan, then I could see a good potential ...and price justification
(too many partnerships...)

Canon General / Re: $10,000
« on: April 24, 2014, 10:49:33 PM »
no point spending all that money to stay home and post gear pics in forums...

if accounting for what I have already - maybe a larger gear bag, a couple extra batteries for my g1x2(backup camera), and spend the rest in a vacation in either Iceland or New Zealand

if starting from nothing, pretty much same as above, but no large bag - so, G1X2, evf, 4 batteries, a cpl filter plus adapter and a travel tripod - still less than 2k - camping in Iceland or New Zealand becomes a must

Lenses / Re: New TS-E Lenses for Photokina [CR2]
« on: April 21, 2014, 12:46:34 PM »
I think that maybe these new TS-E lenses will have the ability to electronically register the Tilt and Shift positions, which might allow for advanced lens corrections in post.

I know nothing, but I know that indeed I could use THAT feature either live or in PP (as to figure waht went wrong ::) )

PowerShot / Re: Canon PowerShot G17 Coming in May? [CR1]
« on: March 31, 2014, 01:32:07 PM »
I think Canon is droping the G1#'s series and moving in G1X's series, sort of what they did with the 1D series - now just 1Dx.....

G1Xmk2 was in rumour status for a while...and now a G17 competing model just "pops" out of nowhere?

sure, why not - so typical of Canon

It makes no sense comparing it with FF lenses  - apples with apples.
The samy 16mm is equivalent to a 24mm FOV in FF; so DxO is being silly and bringing rigged results this way.
When one changes to other lenses in equivalent FF range, or to a FF camera with given lenses, the results are substantialy different.
Not to say the Samy is not good at all - just should not be compared the way they did
