That, and they can also harness the power of mass production to make much of the AF system for both 5d3 & 1DX cheaper on a per unit cost since they share large parts....

AKA, farm it out to slave labor in China. Brilliant! High end gear at "low" prices for those of us who don't care how we get our discounts.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: The 5D Mark III & SD Memory Cards
« on: June 25, 2012, 07:10:08 PM »
Sorry - this is *not* new information.  In Canon's defense this is all explicitly stated on page 117 of the owner's manual.  If you are concerned about burst mode then leave camera on Standard or Auto Switch Card.  The manual states:  "When Rec. separately is set, the maximum burst will decrease greatly. (See pg 121)".  Pg 121 further explains on the matrix the burst rates and also states: "The Maximum burst rate applies to High Speed Continuous Shooting", it then extrapolates that it is referring to UDM7.  It may seem obvious then since the SD cads (if engaged in the two other record modes modes) would have to be the lowest common denominator.  On page 32 the manual also states the camera does not comply with UHS standards although these cards can be used.

Now a good work around to this if in the field and you need the backup feature but also the fastest burst mode on a UDMA7 CF card is set the camera to record only on the CF card (Standard Mode). Be sure the CF is the card chosen to record (under Record/Play menu) as well.  Now you can copy your images to the SD card by pressing Menu.  Choose Menu section 3, sub menu 1 and select "Image Copy".  Here you can define your Source (the CF card) and the freespace on Card 2 (SD card)  there you can copy all your CF images to an SD card without losing burst mode speed and still have your backup.

revup67, excellent post! Thanks.

To the disgruntled, all you have to do is buy the 1D X instead. "Problem" solved--for just a few thousand dollars.

EOS Bodies / Re: Is the 5DIII the New 50D?

Bottom line is that each of us is on an individual journey. You buy some, and you pass on others. Like deciding when to upgrade your laptop or your software. Second bottom line: I love the 5Dmkiii... Third bottom line (triple bottom line is after all the current vogue for corporate reporting): It will be a long time before I change.

DITTO! Hem and haw, debate the merits, compare and contrast, pixel gaze, on and on... Bottom line is the 5DM3 is a GREAT camera. I LOVE my 5DM3!!

I prefer the "Pocket Guide"--the CliffsNotes of the Mark III manual.

"After DPREVIEW of D800 would you still get the Canon 5d mark iii?"

YES! And I did it AFTER the DPReview of the D800. IMHO, you're either with us or against us. ;)

I placed my order on 4/19/12 for the 5D mark III kit.

They just charged my credit card today and say: "Order Status: In stock, order sent to warehouse"

Was this from B&H?

Ditto! And I ordered mine from B&H on 5/1.

I ordered mine from B&H on May 1st. I'm imagining I'll receive it before June 1st. Hopefully, I'm not being overly optimistic...

CR most certainly increased ad revenue on his site with this non-issue. Good on ya mate!

I just ordered my 5DIII because of the fix! Brilliant!!

[Actually I ordered one because, according to CR, they're coming back in-stock very soon--I hope!]

So can you make good prints?? It's AMAZING how anal photographers are!

Sweden 2004. Canon Powershot S410 RAWKIN' the pixels! ;)

First shot: Golden Gate Bridge at night. Canon T21 w/Canon EF-S 15-85mm. Tripod? Nah, just rested the camera on a wooden railing.

Second shot: Musical still life. Canon G11, handheld from the front row.

All very high tech! ;)

I use Define 2 and Silver Efex Pro (SEP 1) as a regular part of my processing routine--and LOVE them both. I mention "version 1" for SEP, however, because SEP 2 does NOT run on my machine--even though my machine (Mac) is well above the system requirements. After the release of SEP 2 there was a LONG thread about the issue on the Nik forum, but apparently the forum has been shut down (someone correct me if there's a new forum site). So my recommendation is to try the fully functioning demos available for download from Nik before you buy and save yourself a possible major frustration.
