Lenses / Re: I'm in a lens pickle
« on: March 06, 2012, 08:53:47 PM »
The 50 1.4 was my second non-kit lens when I had a crop body which puts it closer to 80mm and I used it exclusively for the better part of a year. Maybe not everyone is willing to move to get the shot they want, but it got me to do just that and I've loved the results. Can't wait to have it be a bit wider in a few short weeks.

EOS Bodies / Locking Mode Dial.
« on: March 06, 2012, 03:11:08 PM »
The mode dial has certainly caught a lot of heat from both sides of the fence. People either love or hate that little button you have to press to switch modes but rarely don't care about it. I personally don't care. I've only switched modes accidentally once or twice, but I welcome the change just to see if all the hate is rational.
I wasn't expecting it, but if Canon would have given the 5D3 the mode selection of the 1-series cameras I would have been very happy. It would increase the weather sealing a bit more, be one less mechanical part that could break, and one less obtrusion to snag on something.

That said, what type of mode selector would have have chosen if you could decide?

EOS Bodies / Re: 5DMiii at BnH or Amazon?
« on: March 05, 2012, 10:46:29 PM »
Do any other these retailers (BH, Adorama, Amazon) actually close pre-orders when the initial shipment has been filled? Or do they keep pre-orders open all the way until the product is released?
On the amazon listing
"Note on Availability:This item is in high demand and we have taken orders up to our initial allocations. We will continue to accept pre-orders and fill them as soon as additional inventory becomes available. We will not charge your credit card until we ship the product."

i've been a long time lurker and have finally decided to register.

On the night of announcement i went to Amazon and refreshed their 5D3 page every few minutes as they updated. As soon as it was available for pre-order i jumped on it. Im within minutes so i hope im one of the very first in line. I shoot with a 7D and have been wanting to upgrade to full frame...and this is the perfect opportunity.

Just out of interest what time Amazons link start working? (and what time. One are you?)

I got the 5d3 in their search soon enough but the page it linked to was a broken link still at 2am EST when I went to bed.
I can't say what time Amazon started taking pre-orders, but I placed mine at 2:33am central time.

EOS Bodies / Re: 5dIII battery grip
« on: March 03, 2012, 08:50:20 AM »
The old grip is still listed under accessories on canons website. It will, however lack the M-Fn button and joystick. I also think the new grip loads batteries similar to the 1D style on the side and not the trap door on the back. Not to say that's worth the extra 200 dollars.

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D mkIII Battery Grip???

if you look at the accessories from canons website, though, it lists the old grip too. It seems as though you can use either the new insanely priced, but joysticked grip, or the old more affordable grip lacking the joystick and M-Fn button.

is it worth the upgrade from the mk2.. video doesn't interest me...
Maybe it's because I'm coming from a 50D, but I looked at the low light/high ISO samples from DPReview and was incredibly impressed. I'm a low light junky so the step up for me should be night and day. I preordered around 2:30am from Amazon.

I think the non-L to L upgrade would be muuuuch larger than the 2 to 3. I've been debating new glass given the price point being about 700 dollars higher than I was hoping for the Mk. III, but in the end upgrading from a 50D to the 5D will win.

EOS Bodies / Re: Availability (Based on past releases)?
« on: March 01, 2012, 02:11:27 PM »
With the 1D X being announced in, what, October with the release in April? I won't say it will be that drastic, but I'm assuming the Mk.III will start to trickle out in May, and I'll hopefully get my paws on one before June. That's just wishful thinking though. With supply and demand it may not be until this fall.

Video & Movie / Re: Canon 5d markII vs 5d mark III for video
« on: February 29, 2012, 04:35:46 PM »
I'm surprised that nothing has been mentioned as the 5DII set the bar with DSLR video. I would think that they'd at the very least increase the frame rate to 60 in 720p. The recent photos show a headphone jack which is a plus.

Video was brought up in one of the other 25 5D threads and someone mentioned that 720p60 was included with the 7D. If that's true, and I have no reason to doubt it is, there's about a 1% chance that the next 5D won't feature that frame rate at that resolution.

EOS Bodies / Re: If there's no 5D3 Friday...

If there is no 5D3 on friday... which I really hope there is...  ;D
I wouldn't spend the allocated funds for anything else because the 5D3 is bound to be released sometime in the very near future if not on friday.  I do really want to pick up the 14mm f/2.8L II but it can wait until I secure a 5D3.  If you choose to satisfy your need to buy something now, you will likely regret it in the future when the item you really want becomes available and you have already spent the money on something less rewarding.  Just my $0.02 in buyers rationale.
I agree that it's bound to come out soon and that makes the decision a bit rough, I don't think I'd regret buying a lens though, as I was going to buy it with the 5D3 until the 3500 price got pretty solid. Time will tell...

No offense, but this is the type of logic that gets people in debt.
And - possibly more important - is what causes buyer's remorse and general disgruntlement about what they do buy, when they realise that they really should have waited...
I agree that buyers remorse comes when you decide you can't get something so you just go and spend your money, but when you move from number 1 to number 2 on the "to buy" list I don't think it's quite as bad. But you're all right, I've waited on a 5D for a little over a year, I may as well just hunker down and keep saving. Maybe I'll be able to afford the camera and a lens together when it's finally available.

No offense, but this is the type of logic that gets people in debt.  You said you set the money aside for a camera and you're still a little short, so I'd just keep saving.  I'm not buying anything else, because I'm sure I'd regret it if the 5DIII was released next week.

No offense taken. The money I have set aside isn't my "camera fund" as much as it's my "gear fund." It's money that's going to get spent on camera gear one way or another. And the money to go towards the 5D that I don't have yet would be from selling my 50D, and another venture that will pay off in April. All the money I have directed is completely disposable income. That said, I probably will end up waiting for the next 5D, it's just all this anticipation has me wanting to shoot with something new.

« on: February 28, 2012, 04:46:10 PM »
Will you still buy something? What I mean by that, I currently have about 2,400 set aside for the new camera and should be able to fully pay it off sometime in April but if there is no Full Frame camera announced I'm thinking I'll pick up the 34L and start building back up my camera fund.
I don't need a new body, and I've been planning to go FF for quite some time now but the nerd in me won't let me get a nearly 4 year old camera with the new one being so close.

So, if there's no 5D3 this week what, if anything, will you pick up to appease your burning pockets?

So this would pretty much confirm the 3k+ price to me...

I believe it was the size/shape of the camera. That thing was awkward...
