No, not the 6D for video. Too much aliasing and moire. If it is going to be a Canon, then the 1DX is definitely the best and the 5D3 the next best. The others won't do much for you.

VAF filter for 365 is still 700 less than 5D with same video quality.

New update by Dave Dugdale:

Canon 6D vs Canon 5D Mark III Which One to Buy Small | Large

I know the BMPCC is coming out but will it match Canon for that "feel" so many of us as well as the general public like?  I've been in various forums gathering opinions on the GH3 vs. 5D 3 and those who own both are pretty fair, but still many give it to Canon (although they wish it was as sharp as GH3)

Dave's video really made me think.  What would I really be missing as an amateur hobbyist from the 5D that I couldn't get in the 6D.  If I got the VAF filter and the 6D it'd still be like 800 less than the 5D 3.

Are there any truly compelling arguments to stay away from the 6D?

I was having my NTG2 xlr input into the H4N recording in stereo then doing dual mono in FCPX seemed pretty good with hiss reduction at 50%... Maybe i'll post some samples....the more mobile the better if juiced link is that much better i'd consider...also maybe an inexpensive wireless system to mount on a hot shoe...

Also I think I was drunk when I wrote this hahah I am a hobbyist and a public school teacher I do not have the funds or the desire to spend 3k on just a body!  I did the math since I need a Variable ND and a slider for nice film shots...

I'm really stuck on making a decision...paralysis by analysis as they say!

5D MK II or the GH3 ... i'd say GH3 but from what I see ISO and low light is a problem...I may want to shoot at night, indoors, at a bar, underlit areas etc... and i'm worried about the sharpness/quality of the 5D MK II compared to the GH3 ...

at this point i'm leaning toward 5D MK II refurb on Canon's site... then getting a Tamron 24-70 2.8 with VC (IS)

Thoughts?

Thanks again guys!  Before I pull the trigger I saw John Brawleys video that was just posted with the new BMPCC.  Between that and the GH3 it's insane the variety we have to make excellent videos.

I still think I may spend the 3k for the 5D MKIII. Tell me if you agree or disagree:

1. Better than all comparable cameras in low light noise
2. BMPCC can't take pictures or do running time lapses (I'd like to I,prove at both)
3. Excellent video at FF although the GH3 may be slightly better, probably correct in post-sharpening

My three main reasons to stick with 5D (Nikon was an idea but the d800 doesn't look as good in low light)

Until I am confident that the other cameras won't suit me. I was wondering if I could do the following:

A.  Buy a variable ND that can be used on both crop and FF lenses
B. buy a slider that can use all types of DSLR etc
C. Buy an EVF that can work on my 60d and 5d (is this possible)

Software & Accessories / Audio and 5D MKIII

Is it advisable to use NTG2 into the H4N or just do NTG2 into the 5D MKIII?  Also what options are there for run and gun situations?  Can I find a bracket/mount that will affix both H4N and NTG2 on the camera so I can be as mobile as possible?

Are lavaliers necessary?

Thanks!!

Lenses / Zoom vs. Prime...or both? - Documentary & Run/Gun Work
« on: April 24, 2013, 03:19:40 PM »
Greetings folks!

Looking to accumulate a slow growing collection of lenses for run/gun work as well as some work in controlled environments for interviews etc. for documentary work.

What do you guys think of the following:

1. 24-70
2. 24-105
3. 70-200

Which is the best/most useful for a starting zoom.  I don't think my Tamron 17-50 cuts it, unless I need to give it a second chance since I'll be upgrading to the 5D MKIII (from 60d)

Also this is what I already have:

A. Canon 50 1.8
B. Tamron 17-50 2.8
C. Samyang 85 1.8

I'm looking to do most of the video/interview run and gun stuff by myself so that should be kept in mind.

Thanks!

JM

Thanks..yea I've figured as much which is why I am going to get a refurb 5DMKIII...was thinking MKII but the improvement for video/audio on MKIII seems worth the extra cash...

Thanks for the replies all!

I've been slowly gathering evidence, reading, watching videos, and man is there a lot to know! I'll be a bit regimented in this post for those that will graciously read/comment in order to make it more accessible.

Goals:

- Record footage and conduct interviews (in public as well as controlled environments)
- Create mini-documentaries on a range of topics that will force me to travel (once again, in public as well as controlled environments)

Equipment:

-Very near to pulling the trigger on a Refurb. Canon 5D Mark III (Currently have a 60D which I am looking to sell hopefully get 500-600)
-Lenses:
*Tamron 17-50
*Sigma 85
*Nifty 50 1.8
-SD 16GB extreme class 10 card (2)
-Standard photo tripod
-Glidecam 2000
-MacBook Pro (2011)
-FCX and Premiere 5.5
-H4N
-NTG-2

Equipment I think I need:

-ND Filter recommendations (Variable vs. Fixed? How many stops? Brand? etc.)
-Lenses (Canon vs. Tamron/Rokinon ... prime vs. zoom ... regular vs. cine ... vintage/nikon/etc)
-Slider (not familiar with these..i've seen some mounted on tripod and others that are on the floor?)
-Creating a "Rig":
- A way to affix h4n and ntg2 (extra shoe mounts etc?)
- do i need a follow/pull focus? or can it be done by hand
-Inexpenseive ViewFinder (zacuto seems expensive)
-Do I need a monopod? Shoulder rig?
-Can I get buy with h4n & ntg2? Do I need wireless mics? Beachtek? (i'm not that familiar with audio)

Keeping in mind that I am a school teacher who is doing this as a highly interested hobbyist and not doing this for commercial work, what would you recommend? I am not looking to spend thousands upon thousands (maybe over years) but i'm also not trying to by garbage, highly sub-par equipment either (I am springing for a 5D MK III).

Video is going to be the overwhelming majority use, with secondary pictures (more important for lens recommendations)

What advice would you give?

Regarding:

1. Equipment recommendations
2. Rig set-up (light/portable/effective)
3. Workflow (editing/recording/etc)
4. Anything else I'm forgetting

Thank you SO much in advance!!!

Thanks great info all!

1. How often do sales occur with Canon? Right now I can get a MK III for 2800 (body only) do you think that will go down in the next month or so?  worth waiting or just buy now and be happy?

2. I've read a little on CLP but there wasn't a great single post/article I could find as I do not understrand it.  I do not have a P&S I just have the 60D (seems like I could get 500-650 for it which would be better than the CLP unless I misunderstand)

3. I agree FF > APS-C regardless of Lens

4. Any good articles/videos on creating a low-budget setup for doing run-gun etc. documentary work... I already have:

  -NTG-2
  -H4N

for audio... do I need wireless mic? lavaliere?

Do you guys have opinions on buying Canon Refurbished?

$2800 for 5D MK III
$1800 for 5D MK II

Thoughts on better deal between these 2?  Other Companies beat these refurbished prices?

Ok thanks for the input I greatly appreciate it....reading your points it looks like I have 4 options:

1. Keep 60D - buy fast Zeiss/Canon L primes
2. Sell 60D buy Canon 5D MK II - buy fast Zeiss/Canon L primes
3. Sell 60D Buy GH3 - buy Voigtlander and other quality lenses (as used by Philip Bloom in some videos)
4. Sell 60D Buy BMPCC

Thoughts?

Thanks for the info.  I just feel the 60d is very soft, bad in low light and higher ISO than 600, don't get me wrong I'm not a pro nor do I use it daily. I'd like to make small documentaries for my students and myself. I'd consider a 5d mkii but its crap audio is a downer. The 5dmkiii is 3k before purchasing serious glass!  The gh3 and bmpcc are around the same and would allow me to buy serious glass.

I could also buy L primes but why invest 1000 in glass for a mediocre body?  It seems like getting a gh3 and the voigtlander .o95 used by Philip bloom will give superior footage and low light performance than a fast canon prime on 60d???

Thoughts???
