Photography Technique / What makes a photo great?
« on: December 16, 2013, 01:37:06 PM »
We love CR, and we're here because it's fun to discuss and debate new technology, engage and speculate upon rumors, share techniques and advice...among so many other great reasons. That said, I feel like someone needs to lower the boom every once in a while to keep things in check. MTF charts, megapixels, noise and JPEG artifacts have their place!

Let's not forget what an iconic photo looks like. The reality is most of them are soft and grainy; and any one of us would be blessed to bear witness and capture such a moment just once in our lifetime.

The last thing I want in my portfolio is a bunch of perfectly-lit, ultra-sharp, mural-sized, noise-free crappy photos. I'd be happy with a single epic image that I can be proud to have captured. That search continues.

Soapbox dismount!

EOS Bodies - For Stills / OUT: DSLR // IN: Micro 4/3
« on: August 20, 2012, 12:34:30 PM »
I'm trying to find a reason NOT to do this:

Sell: 5D2, TS-E 24/3.5L II, 24-105/4L, 40/2.8
Buy: Oly OM-D, Oly 12/2, Pan/Leica 25/1.4, Oly 75/1.8

Size, weight, price and general flexibility seem to outweigh the advantages of an all-out DSLR system. I'm finding you have to dig pretty deep to find significant differences in IQ in practical use. Has anyone made this kind of change?

Qualifier: I'm not a full-time pro. I don't make my living in photography. It's only a small part of my job, but it's a huge part of my life. I shoot for the enjoyment of shooting: typically landscapes, nature, travel and cityscapes.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / 5D2 RAW "Crosshatch" Banding
« on: June 20, 2012, 11:05:49 AM »
I'm wondering if anyone's seen this subtle "crosshatch" style banding on 5D2 RAW files...

EXIF:

5D2
TS-E 24/3.5L II
f/5
1/40
ISO 100
B+W 010 UV Haze Filter

By no means do I feel like I was "pushing" the camera. It was a pretty standard sunset position. This is the first I've seen this on my files, though I haven't shot much at dusk since purchasing the 5D2 a few months ago.

I could actually see the bands even more clearly on the camera LCD. Pushing the exposure up a bit in ACR reveals the pattern.

Full, Crop and Crop+3EV from different part of the image attached.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Spots on 5D2 RAW files?
« on: March 26, 2012, 10:03:42 AM »
Wondering if anyone knows what would cause the spotting in the attached images. This is a RAW conversion with no adjustments other than to open in Ps and save as a small JPEG. I've shown the full image as well as a 100% crop of the affected area.

EXIF:

5D2
TS-E 24L II
B+W 82mm 010 UV Haze
RAW
ISO 100
f/16
2.5 sec

These spots only showed up on these exposures of the bridge (same spots on multiple exposures). Not apparent on other shots I've taken. No dust on anything.

All brand new gear. Only 150 snaps so far on the 5D2. Could the filter be causing this?
