I've shot around 30k photos since I've gotten my 5d III and I would say in about 20k of them I've taken advantage of the advances that this camera brings (even over my 1d4)

Money well spent.

Lenses / Re: Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 Pancake

Love this lens. I find it hard to take any of my other lenses out with me now since I got it.

Portability is AMAZING. The weight is great but the size is on another level. I'm able to stick my 5d III with a spare flash in bags I couldn't even think about before.

Just ordered one from Norman by phone to make sure they had it in stock! Confirmed!

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: The 5D Mark III Refusal To Fix
« on: May 19, 2012, 05:34:57 AM »
I have two 5D Mark III bodies from the first shipment that are effected by the light leak to the metering sensor and have been trying to get Canon to do something about it to no avail. I took one body to their service center in Irvine last week and was turned away saying that they had not yet announced the fix but that it would be soon. I called today and was told that they are “still investigating the problem”. It is now two months after I purchased the cameras and they are still not offering to open them and install black tape or black mylar or whatever. I was at a Canon event in Hollywood for the 1DC a few weeks ago and the rep. there said that Canon needs to be able to act upon their fix globally on the same day so they need to get everyone up to speed. I wonder how long it takes to ship rolls of black electrical tape to their repair facilities? Maybe they’re just hoping everyone forgets. To make matters worse, their much touted new service center in Hollywood is just down the street from me but won’t accept me as a customer because I’m not a C.P.S. Platinum member. I spend all my camera money on Canon but until I spend $500 a year on a membership they won’t open their doors to me. I need to continue using their repair facility in Irvine…a two hour round trip with no traffic. All I can say is W.T.F.?

Quite a sense of entitlement you have there.
They had an announcement they will fix it. Hold your horses. And ? what the heck is wrong with making a facility cater to their best customers? Are they not allowed to do that?

why would you write about my personal life? I know you were trying to be funny - I didn't find it funny

anyway, 6 months from now we'll know if "good enough" was good enough for most people or just for some

edit (let me try and fail to be funny now): you don't mess up with someone that calls himself NormanBates...

Are you kidding? it's been long enough in the field a lot of people are using them professionally already. Personally, I've shot 3 weddings, 2 big events for pure testing purposes before the weddings and shooting a photoshoot this weekend for a fashion client. Being able to shoot at the ISO's I shot were a God send in both what and how I could capture. I also sipped through batteries as some situations I just didn't need my flash where I did before and others I used much less flash.

Was I nervous on relying on high iso? Yeah.. but I tested it enough at music / film fest and coffee shop to know it's limits and stuck with it. Constantly during the wedding's I was just blown away at how high of ISO I could shoot. If I can get through all those situations I don't know that many people that would have more extreme ones that it wouldn't be "Good Enough"

Again as I've said in other post this is coming from a guy that was just an availability of the d800 away from switching over.

Would love to see how many people raise their hands when they are asked "When is your final output for your clients 8mp?"

apple designs the iphone, foxconn makes it. Nikon designed the sensor, sony makes it.

To be correct, Nikon designed some supporting circuitry around the sensor, not the sensor itself...

Totally wrong here

Look at the last few Sony DSLR's + Sony sensor announcements and see how Nikon's come AFTER things are announced or released. If you think that's just a coincidence then you are really wearing blinders.

And even the first part of your analogy. foxconn puts it together. For example. The sensor in the Iphone 4s is well known to be a Sony 8mp.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon is getting owned in sensor technology

I wouldn't trust 90% of information you see on any one site on the internet...  Then again, there are plenty of formal and informal reviews, lots of conclusive info, and even digivalrev, predominately nikon fans had to side slightly towards the 5d3...  While the sample pics on canon's website wasn't earth-shattering, photos people are posting with the actual camera from real photographers are.
I agree. Well, I did talk to a Canon representative and he stated that he now feels comfortable taking pics at 800 ISO, which made me raise an eye-brow. It seemed like everyone else was talking about bigger numbers on the net.
Since all the talks on the net are so biased I have to rely on "probably scientific" measurements like DxO and take into account factors they don't measure such as FPS (canon!), grip/handling (canon!), raw-m (canon!) and better downsampling in videos to avoid moire (canon!). I also feel a bit more comfortable with canon lenses, although I don't really know why.
Everyone is telling that there's no need to switch camps but if you have to choose because you own no gear of either company, it's a real tough decision.

At 6400 what happened to the detail???
I did see some of that stuff. But I have to admit I don't intend to take pictures at 6400 ISO. I might need it in video, not sure. Again, not an easy decision in any case.

Don't get me wrong typho. If you get the D800 you'll be extremely happy. But for anyone to say to get the 5d III and they wouldn't be equally as happy unless they have a specific reason to need 36 mp then that would be ridiculous.

For me the high iso made a huge difference. It's what stopped me from switching. While my main deal is fashion. I earn quite a bit from weddings and already that ISO handling has been killer for me. Also there are different ideas I can incorporate in low light situations even with my fashion shoots that i would not been able to before. Another benefit I didn't really consider in the past.... Flash battery! Being able to safely bump it to a much higher iso means I use much less flash battery for the same picture.

I must say, I was already disappointed by Canon's sample pictures and I was stunned by Nikon's sample pictures.

I know Canon posted pics that were converted raw-to-jpeg in-camera, while Nikon did a raw-to-jpeg conversion probably on a computer. And some people suggested Nikon simply hired a better photographer than Canon. But please, why on earth would Canon post bad samples leading to somewhat incomprehensible justifications?

Also, Canon used some really expensive $10000, and not-yet-released 24-70 II lens for some photos, while Nikon exclusively used regular 14-24, 24-70 or 70-200 lenses that everyone's got.

Why do I feel more comfortable with Nikon when it comes to those two cameras?

By the way, I have neither of the cameras. I have simply been doing my research to figure out which one of them are better for me.

Remember the 5D Mark II samples where also not very good either.

Did you look at any of the high iso samples of the d800? They start to fall apart really quick. I was actually convinced I would buy a D800 (before using the new AF and high iso of the 5d III). Cost to change would have been extremely minimal to none and I even went as far post on forums to get nikon lenses.

But then I saw the samples from some pretty well known photographers in even controlled studio situations....

I mean don't take my word for it. Look for them yourself.

This is just one of the ones I was looking at http://www.flickr.com/photos/dos-chin/7002918731/#in/photostream/
I can find more if you can't find them. It's Shinji Watanabe's Flickr

At 6400 what happened to the detail???

So I expect everyone that takes DXO as the bible to buy one of these cameras in the near future. Their DXO scores are all rated the same or better than the 5d3

d3 (Mp a little low for me.. Should definitely be for all those than complain that the 22 in the 5d3 isn't enough)
nex7 (Again. Roight... if the NEX 7 is the kind of camera that suits your needs why are you even considering a regular DSLR)
k5 (Ummmm No Comment but according to DXO mark ! It's a better Sensor!!!)
d3s (Mp a little low for me.. Should definitely be for all those than complain that the 22 in the 5d3 isn't enough)
d3x (Have you seen the high iso pics??)
d4 (Another if you are looking for a camera like this then the 5d3 class shouldn't be something you are comparing to)

And then it comes down to the
d800 It's supposed to be the best sensor EVER but give me a 5d3 file in higher iso anyday.. I was seriously considering jumping to the d800 for AF purposed (before I tried the 5d3 AF). And I do, do a lot of studio work so the extra mp would be great. But looking at examples from around the web of high iso on the D800, even from very established photographers. I was not happen with it. You can tell me that if you do this and that to the file it'll look the same or better... But when I shoot high iso there are usually gigs that involve a sizable amount of pictures. That extra time to get it to look the SAME or just a little better than a 5d3 file.. Totally a waste

Also after buying. Let us know exactly what about the camera you buy is better than the 5d3

You are missing the point... It isn't a flaw or a fault. The product behaves as it was intended to by the designers. Try it for yourself, if you don't believe me. If you don't have the camera or have not used someone else's under reasonable shooting conditions (ie. without a lens cap on), then reserve your comments until you have first hand experience.

I, like others on these forums, have actually tested it. As claimed by esi32 in the original thread, the LCD only throws the meter of at aroun -4 or -5EV, well below the accurate operational limits claimed by the manufacturer (like, 24 times less light lower).

First, some people have found that it throws off the metering by 1/3 stop at EVs of 1 or even 2.

Second, I suspect that under stronger ambient light, such as bright sunlight at high-noon in the middle of summer, the meter will be affected at EVs of higher than 2.

Wow you sure have a lot of time on your hands to troll about a problem that seems like you never encountered yourself when shooting.

I was shooting a venue  (concert) when I HAD to use 25600 ISO to get what I needed and had no problems with the exposure meter. I  used the lcd light quite a few times as it was the first real day on the field of the cam and I wasn't totally used to the settings yet. After being amazed by the pictures I got from the concert that night. I walked around the neighborhood that barely had distant city light glow to light it just to mess around. Again used the lcd light a few times (I specifically remember this because I hardly ever used it in the past except on the first day or so of getting a camera). Again issue never came up or never came up enough that I noticed it.

So is it an issue? Well yeah it's a bug but to go fire and brimstone about it? Are you kidding me???? Canon has already acknowledged it and will find a fix for it. If the box was as bad as you seemingly make it , there would be a lot more issues than this EXTREMELY fringe one.

During when Canon showed off the camera it had this grip

http://gallery.photo.net/photo/15275493-md.jpg

but all the product pictures for amazon / bh / adorama makes it look much more similar to the 5d II grip.

Which one is right?

EOS Bodies / Re: How many actuations on your Canons?
« on: April 08, 2012, 11:53:46 PM »
I remember talking to Dan Heller (danheller.com)when I bought a newly serviced 1ds2 from him. He had 750k actuations on that camera before the shutter went out and had a million+ on some other cameras!

I probably have around 250k on my 5d2. That camera is a trooper! Thinking about using a free cps cleaning later this month.

Spring is here - our old cameras can still take a good picture without all the technological gizmos - face-detection doesn't really grab me as important and the IQ is more than good enough. My choice of camera is not going to be impacted by the technology

Here is this mornings picture of a kid, taken with an obsolete APS-H camera without iFCL or face detection. The second is even worse - with a camera with a Digic 3 processor!

Second picture:

Camera Model: Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III
Lens: EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM
Image Date: 2012-04-01 12:06:33 (no TZ)
Focal Length: 105.0mm
Aperture: f/8.0
Exposure Time: 0.020 s (1/50)
ISO equiv: 50
Exposure Bias: +0.33 EV

What if I told you I'll make a camera with Goat detection ? ;) would that change your thinking?
