Briansquib: much of it might be, but there are certain places I think are beautiful.

For example, pictures of Côte de Granit Rose:
https://www.google.com/search?q=C%C3%B4te+de+Granit+Rose&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=33W&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=n-gjUP-JEOaw0QH3kICAAw&ved=0CFAQsAQ&biw=1024&bih=1127

Ah - that is western France.

I was only curious because I go over server times a year and not seen any good landscapes there - lots of good chateau though

Something similar to the 5D MKII with better AF would be more than enough for most just a slight upgrade would make the camera much more useful!

The 1DX 18mp sensor (keeps the MP lower than the 5D MKIII, 7D body and sealing, 7D 19af autofocus system so not to compete with the 5D MKIII and 4.5fps to be useful but not compete with the 5D MKIII think that would be a great start point.

Possibly a touch screen? Similar to the 650D that you can turn on and off to suit both types of people. Must be high res too. Similar video to 5D MKIII.

The 1DX sensor and 51k native ISO (without extensions) plus "7D body and sealing, 7D 19af autofocus system".  How about that at 2k USD?

Must have better focusing than the 7D

The 14mm can be difficult to use - but it can capture an amazing perspective if done well. @lex on this forum has posted some amazing shots showing as much. We will spend a few days in the north of France, which is a beautiful place for landscape shots. My thought is to bust out the 14mm for that leg of the trip.

I'm really torn on whether I should bring the 24-105 or the 70-200.  The former is a much better general purpose focal range and lighter to boot, but I have more fun lugging around the later and it's a faster lens.

Thank you for the advice so far!

Dont quite know where in the North of France you expect good landscapes - a lot of it is very flat and boring

I'm also going on two trips soon (Maybe London and South Korea) and planning to just take the 5D Mark III, 24-105 and my nifty fifty (50mm 1.8 II). Maybe the flash also (430EX II) and a spare camera battery. Leaving my 70-200 2.8 IS II at home and the BG-E11 as well to make the camera gear as light as possible. Of course some CF and SD cards as well and the chargers for the camera and for the AA batteries. But the chargers and spare AA batteries will be placed in another bag, not the camera bag. The camera bag is a ACME Made Union Photo Messenger, like it alot. Small and doesn't look like a camerabag.

Thinking about replace the 50mm 1.8 II with something else but don't know what really. Maybe the canon 50mm 1.4 or the Sigma 50mm 1.4. Would really like the 50mm 1.2 but that is too expensive for me right now.

/ Stolpe

In London a 17-40 would be good - dont forget the UK plugs have rectangular pins, rather than the round EU pins

They both are suffering from noise

They're both ISO 3200 and the presentation size is roughly 24". There's some noise, but neither "sucks", and there really isn't much at all to choose between them. (And some of the roughness you consider "noise" would disappear in a print where all pixels can be laid down on the paper instead of scaled down by algorithm.)

I wouldn't be happy with that noise - there is some ugly stuff in the left image

Definitely wa from looking at your itinerary. You will find europe much smaller with little space to shoot.

24-105 as the main walkabout
14mm

As the minimum would do you well. Make sure you take the battery charger with a TWO PIN plug adaptor

Here are two ISO 3200 crops presented at roughly the size they would appear on 24" prints. Does either one "suck"? Can you tell me which cameras they came from?

Right hand is 7D

They both are suffering from noise

Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / Re: New Canon Speedlites and ST-E3!

Mixed mode would have one drawback: you need time to account for all the preflashing going on.
Getting rid of the morse from the controller allows for those two additional groups, combining both modes would likely come with a mess of use cases not unlike the compatibility charts for F-mount.
Now putting the ST-E3 on top of a TTl-passthrough trigger not only gives the legacy flashes something to do but also doubles as the missing individual/manual group.

ST-E3 now works on the PW TT1 passthough

Mine is coming from Park Cameras - about 3 weeks from ordering. They are saying that the 1DX is shipping in good numbers now.

bdunbar79 has some good experience and insight to the question. Both would be good for what you want other than the tungsten issue he mentions, so it comes down to cost and features.
What are the prices of a 1dm3 Vs 5dm3?
Do you need bullet proof build?
As far as portraits and landscapes the edge may go to the 1dm3
Do you need new features of the 5dm3?
Is weight an issue?
Given what you want it for high iso isn't needed.
Both have good focus but the edge would go to 5dm3 and its spot focus as well as live view focus for portraits that allow you to see extremely zoomed in on the 5dm3.
You just need to do a checklist of wants and see where things end up.

Hey Bosman,

Yeah you're absolutely right.  For me, it came down to selling the 1Ds3 or 5D3.  (I had 2 x 5D3 and 1Ds3).  I automatically selected the 1Ds3 as first to sell.  I could have sold both 5D3's and kept 1DX/1Ds3 but I instead chose to go 1DX/5D3 combo.  The 5D3 overall is just better.  I'm sure you know this as you shoot quite a bit with the 5D3 too.  The sale was just an automatic and obvious choice in my head right away for some reason.  1Ds3 images can get ugly above ISO 800 and 1600 and let's be honest, to most people the 5D3 and 1Ds3 images look about the same from ISO 50-400.  Only us pixel-peepers can see the difference in color rendition.  Landscape shots do look a bit better if examining very closely.  But yes, overall the 5D3 wins.

Even though I love the 1DsIII the 5DIII has to be the better all rounder camera - in my experience th 5D2 was better all round, but the IQ of the 1DsIII at 50-400 is something else. As I have other bodies I can afford to keep the 1DsIII for those moments - especially now it has a new shutter and is pretty much mint.

My 1DX comes next week so it will be interesting to see if it meets up with the Canon claims of 1D4/1DsIII merging.

Canon General / Re: "Time for a Change at Canon?" -Barons

I have mixed emotions about reviving this thread, but can't resist a bit of "I told you so."

Nikon's first quarter results and projections for the year are out. (See Nikon Rumors). Net profit fell by a jaw-dropping 48%!

Now that those numbers are out, it's a little easier to compare performance of Canon and Nikon. The numbers confirm what I said previously – this particular article was written by a single columnist with an ax to grind against Canon's management.

Demand a change in top leadership at Canon when profits are down 2.4%, while a major competitor's profits are down 48%?

Fact is, Canon is well-managed and doing very well during tough economic times.
And they avoided selling the 5DIII cheap whereas the D800 must not be earning then much money

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 1D X EC and ISO button function swapped
« on: August 08, 2012, 11:56:21 AM »
I haven't done this yet, but on the 1D4 you can set Av mode and minimum shutter speed, to let's say 1/500s.  You then turn ISO safety shift to ON, set your aperture, and put in Auto ISO.  You can also set EC, so that whatever value is chosen by the camera for ISO, corresponds to your EC value.  This is really usefull for indoor sports and I haven't tried it on the 1DX but I imagine it can do this as well.

My 1DX comes next Wednesday - that will be the first thing i set, apart from RAW and expansion point AF

EOS Bodies / Re: Big Megapixels Coming Soon? [CR1]
« on: August 08, 2012, 05:43:32 AM »
Apparent sharpness due to downsizing is a software issue - and therefore can be made equal

Colour rendition in digital can be replicated - however it is extremely difficult to match the curves. Each channel has different sensitivity - which is why the colours vary.

I still stand by my original proposition in that the prints from a 5d2/5d3/1DS3 are probably indistinguishable from a D800 until the  native pixel size is exceeeded - about 16x12

The 1Ds3 excels because of the lack of noise and banding upto iso400, add the better Canon lens and the print IQ will match the D800

Where mps really helps is for very large images or in cropping. The cons of large mps is the ability to save the images fast enough - which is where the D800 is limited.

I am looking forward to compare low iso images from the 1DX and 1Ds3  - 18mps vs 21 mps

My 2001 Fiat Coupé still runs very smooth, you think I should compare it to a 2012 Mercedes-Benz?
It's not a correct comparison, if you take it in general. Yes, old gear cannot produce large prints on, let's say, 300DPI. but for web or 10*15cm - you won't see the difference. I even saw some test pictures from Hassy and some mirrorless camera: on 10*15cm 300dpi print-size even professionals can't distinguish which belongs to which camera ;)

10 x 8  @300dpi is about 8mp

16 x 12 @300dpi is 4800 x 3600 which the 5D2/5D3/1Ds3 manages natively - you wont tell that from a D800 except by colour rendition (maybe)

Hi there mate,
I think he uses a softbox camera right as you could see a square reflection in her eye while underexposing the background a little bit. Regarding the ND, I would suspect so as it is pretty shallow DoF.

Regarding the quality of light, the larger your light source the better it is (gradation from light to shadow) and that's why people use huge softboxes, umbrellas etc.

Regarding techniques for lighting you could look into Joe McNally, David Hobby and Zack Arias for great tutorials.

Hope it helps.

Definitely first one is flashed

Try Sym Arena for a good grounding on Canon Flash
