The 135 F/2L is a super lens. Bokeh is terrific and on a APS-C body it is just stunning.

Howabout 24-105 f2.8.

24-105 is a good reach on both aps-c and ff - f/2.8 would be the icing :)

Wouldn't have the high iso capability - essentially a tweaked 7D with the 1D4 sensor

I have a 400 f/2.8IS - fantastic on my 5DII. But I bought a 7D for birding - there is no equivalent ff to be had.

Just remember that the 400 on ff is the equivalent to the 250 of APS-C. I dont know how the 1DX people will manage their birding now - it was hard enough on a 1.3 crop.

Perhaps Canon will bring out an EOS 3D - 1.3, 12fps, 16mp, 63point AF - you get the drift. Canon have already said they are not dropping the 1.3 crop ........

The 24-70 has such a bad reputation and the reviewers dont think the 24-70 IQ is any better than the 24-105. With ff the DOF is much shallower so that is not so much of an issue as the 1.6 people think  ;D

If background blur is needed the the 135F2 is a good way to go ....

The requirement was stated as portrait. On a ff the best size for the that is from 80-135 (no one tried a 135f2 for portraits?)

On that basis I would suggest the 70-200f2.8 LIS II

The 5DII is a full frame and that would be the equivalent on a 1.6 crop of about 45-130.

I used to have the 24-105 as my standard walkabout - but now the 70-200 is on about 75% of the time. That said for weddings the 24-105 is my lens of choice for the 5DII and the 70-200 goes on my second camera (7D). I also keep the 17-40 for those occasional wa moments

Perhaps they will make the 5DIII with the same sensor, 1 cpu and 18mp as a cutdown 1DX (like 1DS to 5DII).

Howabout the long rumoured 3D with 36MP as an upgraded 5DIII? 5fps, small (5D sized) body, 1DX AF etc.

Canon have to take the market off Nikon - so that is:

D300S -> 7DII with the 1DX AF and shutter
D700 -> 5DIII
D3 -> 1DX
D3X -) 3D

I am going for a 1DX lite - 18mp, 1 x digit5, new AF - to get the D700 market

plus

3Dx with 30+ mp and 5fps prices about the same as the 1Dx to get the Nikon 3x market

My standard wa lens is a TSE-24II on my 5DII. So, so sharp

The 135F2 is my favourite lens both on my 5D2 and 7D

I use it as a short telephoto - F8 gives fantastic IQ as well as superb bokeh at f2.8

Dont get sucked into 'it is a portrait lens' mindset, it is just an excellent 135 lens - use it how you want.

Oh - pair it up with the 85mm f1.8 and you have two useful lightweight lens in the bag :-)

AF, Digic 5, shutter and 10fps in the 7DII.

That will blow off the 300s

I have a 7D and a 5DII.

I would expect a 7DII and a 5DIII to have a version of the 1DX AF plus the Digic5 processor. When of course is another issue, but I doubt they will be in the shops for another year. I would be surprised if they merged the 5D/7D lines into a ff - there are just too many EF-S lens out there.

After a Rebel I am amazed you sent back the 7D - the AF is in a different league. The 5DII AF is very accurate, just a bit slower as is the fps.
