EOS Bodies / Re: my first video shoot with 5Dmark3 In NYC
« on: April 15, 2012, 12:45:50 PM »
It's funny to me how NYers have seen it all- if I set up on a slider at a park where I live, people would be staring at me.  Not one person seemed to look over.  Great video.  I really like that first song- can you tell us who it is?

Technical Support / Re: Sensor cleaning technique that actually works?

I use sawbs and the solution. Send my camera to CPS twice. Never got a better clean that what I can do at home. In fact once came back pretty worse that what I sent.

I've sent my stuff to CPS a lot- never had issues.  They clean very well.  At least in the 10 or so check & cleans that I've had done.  I've also had repairs done- they'll clean it out at that point, too.

Yes CPS will accept the 60D.

I think they do for USA CPS, but not Europe.

How much time do you have?  You can make one!

I would suggest that before you buy any accessories, you buy Neil van Niekerk's book on on camera lighting.  Or at least poke around on his tangents blog.  You don't have to buy anything to get great flash shots.

Amazon just dropped the price of the grip to 358.20. Seemingly random price, I know. But there it is for anyone going the amazon route. They also finally dropped the price on the gps receiver to 278.65.

It will probably take a couple of months.

Some people detest Amazon for how the MkIII was handled, and then others (such as myself) stay loyal. I've never had an issue with Amazon and will gladly wait a month or two for the grip if it means I get the first-hand tried and true excellent service from amazon that I've come to expect. I also don't see near the level of demand for the grip and can't see it being to difficult to acquire compared to the 5D body.

And with Amazon, they had the MSRP for so long, that the people that did want the grip ordered it from a lot of other places instead of Amazon.  So they probably did not get as many orders for it.  I ordered from them once it dropped to $358 because I had gift cards and points.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS 5D Mark III Recall?

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw the 5D3's light leak at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

I remember the iPad 2 had a phenomenon that was exposed (see what I did there) out of proportion, too.  Also about light leaks.  Once the photons settled, it was apropos of nothing.  Much like this leak issue.

EOS Bodies / Re: Demand for High Mega Pixel Body vs 60Da

I don't think they are hemmoriging users over the 800.  I just don’t believe that magical megapickels is so much to worry about.  Given the wait times to get a 5D3, I don't think Canon is either.

Canon is smart.  They are market driven.  If they see a demand, they release it.  I don't think they 'demand' you see is real.

Good info.  But the topic sounds like something I would get spammed with.  Ha!

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon's bad marketing - big mistake
« on: March 30, 2012, 06:18:50 AM »
I remember years ago when the megapixel craze really started.  I had an XTi and a photographer friend asked me to explain to him why megapixels were important.  They were tons of cameras that had more megapixels and his question was 'why is your camera that has less megapixels better than this point and shoot that has more?'  He told me I would be asked that a lot.  And he's right, over the years, I was.  And every time it was by some one who really didn't understand what it meant.  More has never meant better in the photography industry.  But people still chase that dragon like it's the only thing that matters.  I cannot wrap it around my head why you (and many others) are jumping up and down over this.  After years of following the 5D2, I can honestly say that the majority of people never asked for more megapixels. They asked for better resolution, better autofocus and better low light performance.  What they asked for is what Canon delivered.

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D3 Autofocus System
« on: March 29, 2012, 01:30:33 PM »
You are right- they give you the how it works not the why you would use it.  This has been a Canon deal for years.  There was a good explanation of the 7D focusing system that came out right after it did, from Canon.  I would expect the same with the 5D3.  Not to mention, there will be a flood of 3rd party books released soon.

EOS Bodies / Re: This web site is making me question why I lurk here
« on: March 29, 2012, 11:17:44 AM »
However, I personally think of this site not as a photography (how to) site, but a camera hardware site.  As such, people who know more about hardware than photography should almost be more welcome here than great photographers with no hardware understanding.  (joke credit to Emmo Phillips)

Agree.  But to know your hardware, you have to know how to use it.  And that's the OP's point.  A lot of people, for example, are saying 'the 5D3's focusing sucks.'  However, they are coming from an XTi and don't understand absolute basics of how to set focus.

Feel that?  I just gave you an e-hug.  Totally agree.
